A Survey of Hancock County, Maine By Samuel Wasson 1876: Isle au Haut.—This our "youngest," was
incorporated February 28, 1874. It includes Isle au Haut (Isle of Holt),
the two Spoon islands,_ Yorks, <Fog, Burnt, Merchant's, Kimball's and all
the other islands south of Merchant's Row. The Isle au Haut is one league
directly south of Deer Isle. It contains about 3,000 acres. The highest
part of the territory is in the middle of the island, and exhibits the
appearance of a saddle. When first explored, it was called "High Island,"
its shore being bold, with high, steep cliifs. |
