Imagine my surprise, when as a fledgling armchair genealogist, I started searching my paternal surname and couldn't locate anyone further back then two decades. I do not even remember how I learned about variants also known as the Soundex Code Indexbut I can let you know that once I learned what variants were, it was like night and day in the success of my research.
Variants and spellings are two different things I feel. Most times surname spellings are not recognized in the Soundex Code Index. It was usually the result of census takers writing the names down phonetically. Church records have in places maintained the original spelling, but most cases the names have been been angelicized. (This is especially true for birth names).
Follow the links below to view some of the more frequent listings I have come across where the surname is either a variant, or has a phonetic or angelicized spelling.
If you would like for a variant of a name to be included on this site, contact me at French Connections. Include the original surname as recognized in the Soundex Code Index, and send the different spelling along with the location where it was seen.
