French Connections Newsletter

Issue 9

Dear Family and Friends,

It has been a stretch of time since Issue 8 was sent to you. During this period of inactivity, there has been personal activity from my end which included hand surgery, the birth of the first grandson/great great grandson to all sides of my family, Olympic watching, and of course the every day menu of politics and economy thrown into the mix. Ahh, and lets not forget the NFL. I am quite ready for the season to get underway.

This issue will touch on several families that are interlinked, and have been a source of research for a number of years. With all of us being Holmes and Watsons, I hope a bit of sleuthing and communication will slot some missing puzzle pieces into an intricate family.

  • Future feature articles (including this issue) will show a slightly new format. You will see an open bullet as seen at this beginning of this sentence. These are open ended statements that need resolution.

Digital copies quoted in the feature article "What Happened to Nelson?" are available for your viewing. Email me at lisalisa75224@aol.com if you would like a copy.

I would like to welcome Don King from New Mexico aboard. We connected several weeks ago, and have put together some amazing information regarding the families listed in the feature article "What Happened to Nelson?"  Thanks Don for all of your expertise.

As always, I encourage you to share the newsletter with family and friends.

I look forward to hearing from you all.

Until next issue...

Best wishes,
Melissa

Feature Article: What Happened to Nelson?

Nelson Smart (listed as Narcisse on the 1800 census) was born about 1835 in New York (though a birth record has yet to be located) to Francois Smart Leveille-Tyriest and Ausith Boudreau-Coloumbe both from Quebec, Canada Their marriage records are listed under the "Drouin Collection" (St. Marguerite de Blairfindie, St. Jean, Quebec, Canada).

  • Where is (Smart) Leveille dit Tyriest first introduced? It is located in the "Bibliotheque et Archives nationales du Quebec" but I have not been able to verify this information from other research aids.

Nelson married Louise/a Coulombe August 11, 1856 in Redford, New York. They had two children Franklin Smart (abt. 1857) and Cecelia (abt. 1859)

  • Who are Louisa Coulombes' parents? (Researching the censuses in the Northeastern U.S., I developed some questions that I bookmarked in my brain. Despite performing additional research, some items I just was not able to obtain satisfactory answers for).

I suspect that Louisa is related in some way to Ausith Boudreau-Coulombe but have been unable to make the connection. Variants of the Coulombe surname are Clouatre, Colom, Colon, Coulon, Coulbron, as well as a few others.

The last Clinton County census Nelson Smart is picked up in, is the 1870 census, where he appears to have resided with the Pinkman family.

Military records show that Nelson served in the following:

U.S. Civil War Soldiers 1861-1865
Side: Union, Regiment State/Origin: New York
Regiment Name: 2 N.Y. Veteran Cavalry
Regiment Name Expanded: 2nd Regiment
New York Veteran Cavalry,COMPANY: H

Louisa does show up on "Special Schedule-Surviving Sailors, Soldiers, Marines, and Widows, etc" from Lyon Mountain, New York. The document is from 1890.

On this form, Louisa claims, "Husband dead. Discharge lost. Can't remember" .

Several years later, another document is produced. "The Civil War Pension Index: General Index to Pension Files 1861-1934". It is from the state of Illinois, and is a request for pension benefits by widow Hattie Smart. The request document states Nelson died in 1905.

This documents lists the same identical regiment and unit as Nelson Smart in Clinton County.

Researching backwards from this document, Nelson and Hattie Smart are located in the 1880 and 1900 censuses for White Rock, Ogle County, Illinois. Listed in the household are 2 daughters and 1 son, Elizabeth, Mabel and Walter respectively. Nelson is not located in any earlier census for this region.

The only differences between census and military records are birth year, and location parents were born.

  • Are these two individuals, the same Nelson Smart?
  • When did Louisa Couloumbe-Smart pass away? Where is she buried.
  • What happened to her children Franklin and Cecilia Smart?

 Thought for Today

"A politician needs the ability to foretell what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year. And to have the ability afterwards to explain why it didn't happen."

-Winston Churchill
