French Connections Newsletter

Issue 8

Dear Family and Friends,

Welcome to the New Year of 2008! With the Iowa Caucuses finished and the frantic happenings of different political opponents jockeying their issues and promises before the November election, I watch CNN (as well as frequent the website more times then should be allowed in a 24 hour period). Strap into your seats folks; its going to be a tumultuous ride until Election Day!

Holidays are always the busiest times for me. Besides the planning of holiday events that take place with my own family in Dallas, as well as my family in New York, I find my email account overflowing. A lot of families on their winter vacations, have more time to perform research. Their research drives them to the French Connections website, and before I know it, Voila! I have requests stacking up requesting some type of research assistance. As many of you know, research can be labor intensive and go on for great periods of time. Because I have a great love for genealogy research and helping others, it becomes an art of juggling responses to those queries within a realistic timeframe, keeping my gedcom updated on the website, and writing the next newsletter issue.

Hmmm, with my family and genealogy commitments I wonder why I sleep about 4 hours a day?

Anyways, do not feel like I have abandoned you. I am only one step away from the "send mail" function.

Saying this, I will be a grandmother for the third time sometime around May to a miracle baby boy. The Newsletter may experience a hiatus during this timeframe.

Until next issue...

Best wishes,
Melissa

 Feature Article: Felix Gonyea Revisited

As has happened a few times in the past, my brain becomes boggled and sluggish at an impenetrable brick wall that refuses to crumble.

This issue revisits the family of Felix Gonyea. New information is listed as well questions about the children of Felix and Julie Gonyea, that leaves more questions then answers.

Many thanks to Laura Shoffner from Massachusetts for tracking some of the information down, and in general pointing me in the right direction.

Observations and Questions from Melissa

Q. When and where did Florence meet William England? Where did she she study for the  professions that are quoted in the December 10, 1960 Press-Republican issue.

The Social Security Death Index lists Florence's birth date as July 31, 1906. The Michigan Death Register shows virtually the same data, except the birth date which is off by a considerable timeframe, July 30, 1910. Despite searching for William England, I have been unable to trace his ancestral origin nor possible descendant lines.

Q. Leroy Gonyea and Leo Gonyea: Are they two separate individuals?

Everyone interviewed in my mother's family have told me that there were only 5 children that Julia gave birth to.

In the 1910 Nashua, New Hampshire census, Leo is listed as being age 5. Also listed is Leroy age 3 months. This census was taken approximately 5 months before Ottoroy was born, so this rules him out as being Leroy. If Leo and Leroy are two separate individuals, this would put Ottoroy as the 6th child born into the family.

 Thought for Today

"It has been said that politics is the second oldest profession. I have learned that it bears a striking resemblance to the first.
