Edwin Porter Drew

February 1861 - September 13, 1921

Edwin Porter Drew (3rd), back row center, Casa Grande Arizona

EDWIN PORTER DREW (in photo, back row, center) was born February 1861 in The Dalles, Oregon, and died September 13, 1921 in Los Angeles, California. He married (1) ELIZABETH COLLINGWOOD November 25, 1889 in Florence, Pinal County, Arizona Territory, daughter of JOSEPH COLLINGWOOD and HELENA. She was born 1867, and died April 28, 1893 in Florence, Pinal County, Arizona Territory. He married (2) KATHERINE JOSEPHINE MEEHAN April 13, 1894 in Florence, Pinal County, Arizona Territory, daughter of MEEHAN and MRS MEEHAN. She was born February 1878 in Gold Hill, Nevada, and died Abt. 1940 in Los Angeles, California.

Notes for EDWIN PORTER DREW:

A true wild west businessman and the source of many family legends from the fabulous days of early Arizona. Interests in mining and entertainment. Held the deed to a gold mine about 60 miles south of Tucson (or Casa Grande) Arizona, called the Christmas Gift Mine. Owned the Wonder Bar Hotel in Casa Grande. Also owned Drew's Liquor Store in Tucson, as well as part of a stagecoach business.

Has a headline in the local newspaper: "Ed Drew Breaks Leg," after falling from a horse.

At his father's death in 1885 was listed as a resident of Florence, Arizona.

Witnesses at his wedding to Elizabeth Collingwood in 1889 were Fernando B. Maldinado and Katie Sorney. Edwin and Elizabeth had a daughter in March of 1893, but mother died of a catastrophic womb infection a month later. The unnamed child also died, either on the same day or else soon afterwards, in June.

Witnesses at his marriage to Kathleen Meehan in April 1894 included Abram Humphries, who is likely the same gentleman in the picture of Edwin labeled "young men of Florence."

Another possible photograph of Edwin was discovered in the book "Tombstone: Myth and Reality." On page 113, the picture of the Tombstone City Band, dated 1883 and owned by the Arizona Historical Society, surely includes him as the third gentleman from the left.

Was a defendant in a lawsuit brought by J.T. Woods against Edwin P. and a John Doe in February of 1894, accusing them of wrongfully and maliciously taking possession of Wood's Saloon, including all his wine, glasses, cigars, and gaming tables. Woods lost the suit in a dismissal.

Was the proprietor of The Wedge Saloon, 1902.

With Katherine J. Meehan was proprietor of the Tucson Liquor Store at 80 West Congress Street (later moved to 115-117 East Congress Street) from at least 1902 to 1914, "headquarters for the famous Santa Catalina Mineral Water, Soda Wather, Ginger Ale, etc. Family trade is one of our specialties." Historical note: Prohibition began in 1914.

Residence in those years was at 639 North 6th Ave, in Tucson.

At Sallie Drew's death in 1918 was 56 years old, and living in Los Angeles. Yet he is listed in the Tucson City Business Directory of 1919 as living at the Hotel Lewis, 181 East Broadway.

Source for Edwin's birthplace as The Dalles, Oregon, is his granddaughter, Carol Ann Drew Padgett. She thought that he moved to Arizona in the 1880s, and that his father Joe Drew either came with him or moved soon after. She recalls him being buried in Tucson with his wife Katherine. Also listed as born in Oregon in the census of 1920.

Notes for ELIZABETH COLLINGWOOD:

Married by a Catholic pastor named J Monfort. Witness at the wedding were Fernando B Maldinado (sp?) and Katie Sorney (sp?). Died at 26 years old of puerpral septicaemia (infection contracted during childbirth). Attended by the physician who delivered her daughter, Wm. T. Barry.

Notes for KATHERINE JOSEPHINE MEEHAN:

Grand daughter Carol Ann Padgett recalls the spelling of Katherine's name as "Meighan," or "Meighen." Known as "Nano" by Carol Ann and her brother Ed. Carol Ann cites her birthplace as Nevada. Birthplace listed as Gold Hill, Nevada on a family tree in Marianna Drew's baby book and in the 1900 Census for Tucson.
