Haplogroup T

The results for Kit #65009 were originally posted at FTDNA as Haplogroup K2 but are now showing as Haplogroup T.   The donors for Kits 65009 and 163777 have a 97.5% chance of sharing a common ancestor within the past twenty-four generations.

ENGLAND - R1a

The England group and the Captain Francis Drake group both belong to the R1a haplogroup and thus share a common heritage.  However, the closest match between the two groups differs by 10 genetic mutations.  The FTDNA Time Predictor estimates a 96.55% probability that the donors share a common ancestor withing 48 generations, indicating that the common ancestor likely lived before the year 1000AD.

CAPTAIN FRANCIS DRAKE - R1a

Captain Francis Drake is the earliest of the EKAs in the R1a, American Continent, grouping and may be the common ancestor of this entire group.  The two descendant donors for Captain Drake used two different companies to process their samples: FamilyTreeDNA(FTDNA) for kit #7895 and DNA Heritage(DNAH) for kit #YSC1835.  Since the two companies examine different markers, we can only compare on 32 markers and the two donors match on 31 out of the 32.  Kit# 7895 (FTDNA) has a one step mutation on DYS 447 (26 rather than 25 which is more common among this group).  This mutation my be recent like the mutation on DYS 389-2 for Kit #2859, Elijah Drake in the Tennessee group below, and therefore insignificant.  If so, then we may get more meaningful results if we use the DNAH kit (YSC1835), but that result is missing the five markers indicated by dashes in the result table below.  If we make the assumption that those five markers match the FTDNA results, then using the DNAH test yields perfect 37/37 matches for Abraham Drake of Tennessee (2855), William Drake of Maryland (21915) and Lewis Drake (38531) & Benjamin Drake (17904) both of Virginia.  Using this 37/37 match, the FTDNA Time Predictor estimates that there is a 99.33% chance that the donors for the kits listed share a common ancestor within 12 generations.  That probability drops to 97.45% if we include the one-step mutation on Kit #7895.  Note: The donor for FTDNA Kit#7895 and Cpt. Francis Drake are separated by 12 generations.

  Tennessee & Pennsylvania

Except for Samuel Drake of Mifflin Co., PA, John A. Drake of Alabama and Benjamin Drake of Davidson Co., TN, the EKAs provided in this section are all sons of Benjamin Drake who died in Carter County, TN in 1827.  Notice the mutations on DYS 389-2.  Since documentation exists supporting each donors descent from the EKAs given, we can be reasonably certain that the mutations are recent and therefore insignificant.  Since the results for Kit #2855, EKA Abraham Drake, do not contain any of the recent mutations, we are using this test to compare Benjamin Drake's line with the other R1a subgroups.  John A Drake is the great grandson of Abraham Drake.

Although contemporaries, we do not know if Benjamin Drake of Carter Co., TN and Benjamin Drake of Davidson Co., TN were related.  The 12 marker DNA results do tell us that the descendant donors for both men have a 55.88% chance of sharing a common ancestor within the previous eight generations.

Samuel Drake of Mifflin Co., PA may be a close relative to the family of Benjamin Drake of Carter Co., TN.  Both families lived in the same area of Pennsylvania in the mid to late 1700s.  However, we need to see results from a higher resolution test to strengthen that possibility.  Again, there is a 55.88% probability of a common ancestor within eight generations.

Samuel A. Drake, Kit#6849, has a genetic distance of 3 mutations from Cpt. Francis Drake (FTDNA) Kit#7895.  This yields a probability of 79.21% that the donors share a common ancestor within the past 12 generations.  That probability rises to 91.28% when compared with DNAH Kit #YSC1835, using the assumptions mentioned above regarding Captain Francis Drake.

There is likely a relationship between John Drake, Kit#44879 and Cpt. Francis Drake but we need a higher resolution result to strengthen that assumption.

IRELAND/ENGLAND - R1b1

The results for Kit# 73275, EKA Samuel Drake of England were added to our project on 03 Nov 2006 and were an exact 12 marker match with Kit# 23752, EKA George W. Drake of Ireland.  This match moved one more member out of the Drake Orphan Brigade!

DUTCH DRAKES - R1b1

All eight donors in this group match exactly on all 12 markers, meaning that all six donors have a 70.69% chance of sharing a common ancestor within the past 12 generations or sometime close to 1700AD (assuming 25 years per generation).   Family tradition for the donor of kit number N55018, EKA Pascual Juica, claims that an ancestor of Pascual Juica was the illegitimate son of Sir Francis Drake.  These results disprove that theory but it does appear that the Juica family shares a common ancestry with our Dutch Drakes.  We need an upgrade to this kit to support that connection.

FRANCIS DRAKE OF NEW YORK - R1b1

Kit #32665 has a 4 mutation genetic distance from kits 17639 and 2935 meaning the donors have a 94.15% chance of sharing a common ancestor within Twenty generations.  Kits 17639 and 2935 have a 2 mutation genetic distance meaning that these two donors have a 99.40% chance of sharing a common ancestor within twenty generations.

Kit #25675, Francis Drake has a two mutation genetic difference with 11 other donors in our entire database, meaning that this donor has a 11.56% chance of sharing a common ancestor with any of these other donors within the past 12 generations.  I originally placed this kit in this group because this appeared to be the most likely place for a match.  I may move this kit to the Drake Orphan Brigade.

VIRGINIA - R1b1

Using EKA William Drake, Kit #5372, as the base result for comparison, all of the tests in this group are within 1 or 2 mutations of the base test result.  This likely means that there is a recent common ancestor but the 12 marker tests are not sufficient to allow to conclude that with any degree of assurance.  These kits really need to be upgraded.

We do have higher resolution results for Thomas Drake, Jr. (23727), Osborne Drake (26298), Archibald Drake (99633) and Epaphroditus Drake (2911).  Using the 25 marker results, we can estimate that there is a 75% chance that these donors share a common ancestor within 12 generations.  Kit #23727 (Thomas Drake, Jr.) has upgraded to 67 markers.  Upgrading the other two kits to 67 markers would greatly increase our understanding of the relationship between these three kits.  (Not to mention that the Kit#23727 donor's money will be wasted if no one else in this group upgrades.)

The 25/25 match between James Drake (Kit# 4742) and Daniel Drake (Kit# 4948) indicates that these two donors have a 84.92% chance of sharing a common ancestor within the past eight generations (or about 200 years).  After the upgrade, we find that John Drake (11672) is a 37/37 match with James Drake (4742) indicating that these two donors have a 97.28% chance of sharing a common ancestor within the past eight generations.  Philander Drake (29919) and John Drake (11672) are 12/12 matches with each other and both are within 1 mutation of the other three tests (on 12 makers) and thus are likely related, but we need to see some higher resolutions to these as well.
