Pinkerton/Jarvis Genealogy

Welcome to my simple genealogy related site. I've put this up mostly to aid others who may be researching my line and also to gain some visibility so that I may get some help with my current brick walls. Most of my genealogy work was completed during May 2002 through May of 2003 while I was unemployed. Much of my work is first hand research. For certain lines I was able to connect to work already done by others. I will admit that there may be mistakes but for my direct lines back two hundred years I have done nearly all of the work or have confirmed first hand any information obtained otherwise. You may search my GEDCOM file by visiting Rootsweb.

My Current Brick Walls

John JARVIS

John JARVIS is my gg-grandfather on my mother's side. I have gathered many details of his life but so far have been unable to discover the names of his parents. If you have any information on John or his children please contact me. John's death record in Columbiana County, Ohio states that he was born in Jefferson County, Ohio on September 12, 1829. The first official record I have on him is his marriage to Emuline TOALSTON on December 15, 1853 in Carroll County, Ohio. From his Civil War pension documents (click HERE for a fascinating interview John gave) I found that he lived "near Summitville, OH" (Columbiana County) as late as 1855. In the spring of 1860 he moved his family to Ohio Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio a yet unknown reason. On September 30, 1864 he was drafted into Company H, 78th Regiment Ohio volunteer Infantry at Ironton, Lawrence Co., Ohio. He served for only a few months when he contracted dysentery in March of 1864. He remained in the hospital (Grant General Hospital, Willett's Point, NY and McDougall U.S.A General Hospital, Fort Schuyler, New York Harbor) until he was discharged on June 13, 1865. He was plagued with lung problems and diarrhoea for the rest of his life due to this illness. After discharge he returned to Gallia County, Ohio until early 1874. He then sold his 57.03 acres farm to Ursabous McKean and moved his family back to Carroll County, Ohio on March 23rd of that year. On April 6, 1874 he purchased the west half of the southeast quarter of section 28, twp. 14, range 4 in Carroll County from Hugh Carey. He remained in Carroll County for 15 years. On Mar 26, 1889 he sold his land to Joseph Bryan and he moved just a few miles away to Columbiana County. There, on April 30, 1889, he purchased a part of the south west quarter of section number thirty township nine and range two from Andrew McGillivary. He lived there until his death on July 27, 1907. The information I am seeking for John is the names of his parents, where he was living prior to 1855, and why he moved to Gallia County in 1860 (and then back to Carroll County 14 years later).

John and Emuline had the following children:

From my research I have discovered that John had at least one sister who was named Mary. She married John WELLINGTON on May 12, 1831 in Jefferson County. Mary's son James WELLINGTON fought in Company H with John JARVIS during the Civil War. Other than Mary I have not been able to positively confirm the existence of other brothers and sisters, although it is highly likely considering the difference in age of John and Mary. There are several other candidates that were living near to John (or next door to his children) for most of his life and also seemed to travel to Gallia County and back to eastern Ohio at the same time as John. Details can be found HERE but please do not take these relationships as fact. They are merely my speculation based on educated guesses.

Thomas GAMBLE

Thomas GAMBLE is my ggg-grandfather on my father's side. From census records it appears that Thomas was born in Pennsylvania around 1808. He married Lydia DAVIS at a yet unknown time or place. The earliest official record of this family ("Thos Gammell") is the 1840 census when they are living in Elk Run Twp., Columbiana Co., OH. By 1860 they moved to Centre Twp., Columbiana Co., OH. Ini 1870 and 1880 they were living in Elkrun Township. Also, in the 1870 and 1880 census their last name is spelled "Gamel." Some information on Thomas and Lydia was gathered from the Civil War pension documents of their sons Alfred, Thomas, and George Gamble who all fought in Company I, 78th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. From various indicators in these documents it appears that Thomas died sometime after 1880. Lydia died January 26, 1881 according to son George Gamble's Civil War pension records. I have not been able to find any cemetery records for them. Thomas and Lydia had the following children: I am looking for the specific date and place of death for Thomas. I am also looking for their place of residence prior to 1840.
