Goodspeed's History of S.E. MO: P. 102, refers to Chiles as Judge C.M. Dowdy, b. abt 1808 Middle TN, also lived in KY. Lived seven miles SE of Bloomfield. Was Justice of the Peace for several years. 1876 elected Judge of the County Court which he held for two years.
Census Records: The 1880 census record shows all the children of Chiles & Mary as born in TN
Theory: James P. & James M. - I believe that the James Dowdy, widower, living with the Culbertson family, as a laborer, is James P. This would be his in-laws. And, he is also listed with his two children living with his father, Chiles. Also, On the 1850 Census Eliza E. b. 1850 doesn't show up on any other records, may be youngest daughter of Silas Dowdy, Elizabeth b. 1850 - Connie James P. in Stoddard Co. Court Records Index, 1877 sued St. Louis, Il, MO & S, Railroad for $40.00; 1876 sued town of Bloomfield for $102.75; in several other actions until 1881
Civil War Record: Denise Gartin, found this info at the IL archives: Chiles Dowdy, private, Co. K, Unit 16, Illinois, U.S. Calvary, residence, Bloomfield, MO George Dowdy, Co. K, Unit 16, Illinois, U.S. Calvary, residence New Madrid, MO Joseph Dowdy, Co. K, Unit 16, Illinois, U.S. Calvary, residence Island No. 8, MO Another listing showed all three Dowdy's as sergeants, Co. K was body guards to McClellan, George & Joseph were Prisoners in Andersonville and that George died there 15 Mar 1865. Info at the ILGenWeb site says basically the same thing with the addition of: Chiles Dowdy, 24 May 1864, Trans. to VRC (Veteran Reserve Corps). This could be Chiles Dowdy, son of Silas Dowdy, and George Dowdy is the son of Chiles M. Dowdy, the ages work out better.-- Connie
