In 1860 William was enumerated in household 604. A Berry Dowdy, age 45, b. SC and family was in dwelling 633 with Balam Dowdy, age 83, b. NC. Also in 1860 a Catherine Moss, age 35, b. GA, was living with William B.

15. William K.4 Dowdy (William B.3, Balaam2, Thomas1) was born in Georgia 1833.(17) William died 1910 in Pike Co., AR, at 77 years of age.(18) His body was interred 16 Sep 1910 in Pike Co., AR, Academy.(19)

He married Celia Elizabeth -?- c. 1858. Celia was born in Tennessee 1840.(20) Celia died 1928 in Pike Co., AR, at 88 years of age. Her body was interred 1928 in Pike Co., AR, Academy.(21) Celia's parents are unknown. No marriage record has been found in Cherokee Co., GA, nor in Pike, Howard or Sevier Counties, AR. William and Celia were enumerated in Sevier County, Arkansas, in 1860. In 1870, and 1900 they were enumerated in Muddy Fork Township in western Pike County, Arkansas. In 1880 they enumerated in Muddy Fork Township in Howard County.

William enlisted in April 1962 as a private in Company K of the Confederate 24th Arkansas Infantry, in muster rolls cited in his compiled service record indicate he elisted in either Poke or Pike County. Those records indicate he deserted October 1, 1862. However, after his company was reorganized in January 1863 into what was designated as Dawson's-Hardy's Infantry Regiment (Consolidated) muster rolls indicate he was present at Camp Bowen from June to October 1863. In May the regiment was again consolidated with the remnants of Liddell's Brigade, 2nd Arkansas Infantry (Cleburne's Division), and the unit was assigned to the Army of Tennessee. The 24th participated in the Battle of Chickamauga, the Seige of Nashville, and numerous other engagements, until its surrender in 26 April 1865 at Greensboro, NC.(22) William's compiled service record does not indicate he was with the regiment after October 1863, but further research in Tennessee Confederate records is need to confirm this.

39. Josephine5 Dowdy (William K.4, William B.3, Balaam2, Thomas1) was born in Nashville, Howard Co., AR 30 Aug 1871. Josephine died 20 Jun 1958 in Wheaton, Cooke Co., IL, at 86 years of age. Her body was interred in Rush Fork Cem., Garland Co., AR.

She married Nathaniel Chapman Burrough in Garland Co., AR, 22 May 1892.(32) Nathaniel was born in Clark Co., AR 22 Oct 1859. Nathaniel was the son of Peter Harry "Horry" Burrough and Harriet Jane Bounds. Nathaniel died 1 Feb 1944 in Garland Co., AR, at 84 years of age.(33) His body was interred 3 Feb 1944 in Rush Fork Cem., Garland Co., AR, Rush Fork. According to the 1942 newspaper clipping announcing his 50th wedding anniversary, N.C. was one of the oldest living settlers of Garland County. He moved to the county at the age of four. Garland County was formed in 1873 from Montgomery, Hot Springs and Saline Counties. Chapman's father was living four miles north of Amity in Clark County in 1859, according to P.H.'s affidavit in Joel Burrough's pension application file. P.H. reported on his pension declaration that he moved to Antioch Township of Garland Co. c. 1861.

48. Preston McKinley6 Burroughs Sr. (Josephine5 Dowdy, William K.4, William B.3, Balaam2, Thomas1) was born in Garland Co., AR 4 Dec 1897. Preston died 18 Apr 1963 in Auburn, CA, at 65 years of age. His body was interred in Roseville, Placer Co., CA.

He married twice. He married Blanche Gaither in Garland Co., AR, 30 Jan 1917.(38) Blanche was born in White Co., AR 29 Apr 1899.(39) Blanche was the daughter of William Clark Lumpkin Gaither and May Sawyer. Blanche died 4 Jul 1932 in Hot Springs, Garland Co., AR, at 33 years of age.(40) Her body was interred in Hollywood Cem., Hot Springs, AR. Blanche was 19 years old when her widowed father died, so she took over the care of her six brothers and sisters, plus her own children. She worked nights selling movie tickets, and times were hard. Eventually, her brother Frank and sisters Freda, Linnie and Hattie were sent to the orphanage in Hot Springs. Blanche's children spent part of their time with Grandpa Burrough on his farm. In 1930 Preston took the kids to Austin, and they never returned to Hot Springs until her funeral.

He married Thelma Ruth Johnson in Rockwall Co., TX, 11 Dec 1926. Thelma was born in Houston, Perry Co., AR 11 Oct 1904.(41) Thelma died 13 Apr 1987 in Roseville, Placer Co., CA, at 82 years of age. Her body was interred 16 Apr 1987 in Pilot Hill Cem., Pilot Hill, CA.

Pauline reports: "When I was in the first grade I was told that if I made good grades they would buy me a new outfit. My grades were good, so I got this black dress. They bought Uldine and Preston new outfits also. We were six, four and two years old. Preston is wearing the pants to the suit. That is the reason I believe Preston was two or three when this picture was taken. I know that was the only suit he had until after he was in the Navy."

49. Annie Estelle6 Burrough (Josephine5 Dowdy, William K.4, William B.3, Balaam2, Thomas1) was born in Hot Springs, AR 3 Sep 1902. Annie died 24 Oct 1990 in MD, at 88 years of age. Her body was interred in Rush Fork Cem., Garland Co., AR.

She married William Harris.

51. Lillie Emily6 Burrough (Josephine5 Dowdy, William K.4, William B.3, Balaam2, Thomas1) was born in Hot Springs, AR 17 Feb 1906.(42) Lillie died 24 May 1987 in Lombard, Cook Co., IL, at 81 years of age. Her body was interred in Rush Fork Cem., Garland Co., AR.

She married twice. She married George Peters. She married George Miller.

52. Pauline7 Burroughs (Preston McKinley6, Josephine5 Dowdy, William K.4, William B.3, Balaam2, Thomas1) was born in Hot Springs, AR 25 Mar 1918.

She married Marshall Collier Smith in Austin, Travis Co., TX, 4 Mar 1939. Marshall was born in Austin, Travis Co., TX 10 Feb 1915. Marshall was the son of Eugene Smith and Millie Belle Satterwhite. Marshall died 17 Apr 1990 in Oakland, Alameda Co., CA, at 75 years of age. Marshall was in the Air Force from 1943 until 1945. Polly and her siblings moved to Texas from Hot Springs after their mother died in June 1930. She attended schools in Austin, where she met and married Marshall. They moved to Oakland, CA, in 1943 while Marshall was in the Air Force. From 1943-45 she worked for the Pacific Overseas Air Technical Service Command serving the China-Burma-India theater. Later she worked servicing B-29's when these aircraft were still "top secret." She retired in 1980 after 29 years with the General Foods Regional Office in San Leandro.

53. Uldine Josephine7 Burroughs (Preston McKinley6, Josephine5 Dowdy, William K.4, William B.3, Balaam2, Thomas1) was born in Hot Springs, AR 20 Mar 1920.

She married Horace Chesterfield (Dave) Davis in Reno, Washoe Co., NV, 23 Mar 1941. Horace was born in Roosevelt Co., NM 15 Dec 1917. Horace died 16 Aug 1987 in Great Bend, Barton Co., KS, at 69 years of age. His body was interred in Great Bend Mem. Cem.. Dave loved to read, play bridge, smoke his pipes and dabble in politics. Dean spent some time in Nicaragua while her husband Dave explored for oil. He later worked for Lone Star Steel in Dangerfield, Tex., before their move to Wichita, where he worked for Texaco, and later Vickers Petroleum. The family moved to Great Bend in 1953, where Dave eventually ran Davis Drlg. Dean is active in the First United Presbyterian Church, and she enjoys garden club circle meetings and crossword puzzles.

54. Preston McKinley7 Burroughs Jr. (Preston McKinley6, Josephine5 Dowdy, William K.4, William B.3, Balaam2, Thomas1) was born in Hot Springs, AR 2 Dec 1921. Preston died 14 Nov 1976 in Reno, Washoe Co., NV, at 54 years of age. His body was interred in Churchill Co. Cemetery.(43)

He married Charlotte Frances (Dudie) Young 1944. Charlotte was born in Reno, Washoe Co., NV 15 Jun 1926. Charlotte died 23 Aug 1974 in Reno, Washoe Co., NV, at 48 years of age. Her body was interred in Fallon, NV. He married Joyce Elaine Parks in Minden, NV, 18 Apr 1969. Pres served in the Navy from September 1940 until November 1946, and was discharged as a aviation chief machinist mate. He was aboard the cruiser USS New Orleans during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and for several years during the war. After his discharge he worked for his father at the Lake Tahoe resort for a short time. Pres eventually owned two gas stations in Carson City, and later sold insurance and real estate. Shortly before his death from cancer he was selected Member of the Year of the Nev. Farm and Land Institute.

57. Nancy Susan8 Smith (Pauline7 Burroughs, Preston McKinley6, Josephine5 Dowdy, William K.4, William B.3, Balaam2, Thomas1) was born in Oakland, Alameda Co., CA 1 Sep 1947.

She married Frank Charles Ingram in Oakland, Alameda Co., CA, 1967. Frank was born in Oakland, CA 15 Jul 1940. Nancy graduated from Cal-State University, Hayward in 1972 with a B.A. in fine arts. She currently tutors high school students in math and works part time as a picture framer and artist.

59. Charles Preston8 Davis (Uldine Josephine7 Burroughs, Preston McKinley6, Josephine5 Dowdy, William K.4, William B.3, Balaam2, Thomas1) was born in Wichita, Sedgwick Co., KS 19 Nov 1944.

He married Connie Lou Kitson in Great Bend, Barton Co., KS, 21 Oct 1972. Connie was born in Great Bend, Barton Co., KS 7 Jul 1948. Chuck graduated in 1966 from Utah State U. with a BS in wildlife management. He was a Navy hospital corpsman, and served at the Naval Hospital in Corpus Christi, Tex., and aboard the Hospital Ship USS Repose in Vietnam, where he was medical photographer. He was zoo curator in Great Bend from 1970-1972, before joining the Corps of Engineers as an outdoor recreation planner in Kansas City. In 1976 he transferred to the US Fish and Wildlife in Fort Worth, Tex. He was on the Washington Office staff 1984-86, assistant field supervisor in the Rock Island, Ilinois, field office 1987-1992, and the field supervisor in Cheyenne, Wyoming, until January 1997 when he transferred to the FWS Regional Office in Denver.

She married twice. She married Patrick Kenneth Lackey in Great Bend, Barton Co., KS, 29 Mar 1969. She married Richard Rice 31 Dec 1976. Richard was born 26 Nov 1943. Cindy a psycotherapist in Indianapolis. She also has music degrees from Wichita State U. and Grinnell College in Iowa.

He married Patricia Ann Evans in Great Bend, Barton Co., KS, 6 Jun 1986. Patricia was born in K.C., Wyandotte Co., KS 26 Oct 1951. Bill is a graduate of Washburn U. in Topeka. He worked as a radio disk jockey in Topeka before starting his career as a teacher and debate coach at Washburn Rural School District. He is currently a debate coach at Blue Valley High near Oathe, where he manages one of the largest teams in Kansas. The family lives on a quiet country lane near Hillsdale Lake and Spring Hill. Pat is a social worker for Johnson County, Kan.

62. Alice Sheridan (Sherie)8 Burroughs (Preston McKinley7, Preston McKinley6, Josephine5 Dowdy, William K.4, William B.3, Balaam2, Thomas1) was born in Reno, Washoe Co., NV 15 Aug 1945.

She married twice. She married Bruce L. Smith in Carson City, NV, 1966. She married Alfred R. Silva in Santa Clara, Santa Clara Co., CA, 1978. Sherie has lived in Carson City most of her life. She attended the University of Nevada and Western Nevada Community College, and still takes an occasional class or two. She has worked as a secretary/administrative assistant for nearly 30 years (13 of them with the local community college), and she currently works for a real estate appraisal firm in Carson City. She enjoys golf, motorhoming (as well as other travel), crafts, and being a grandmother! As of July 1994 Al and Sheri will have eight grandchildren combined.

63. Melissa Anne8 Burroughs (Preston McKinley7, Preston McKinley6, Josephine5 Dowdy, William K.4, William B.3, Balaam2, Thomas1) was born in Fallon, NV 12 Jul 1952.

She married twice. She married Gregory Robert Forson in Reno, Washoe Co., NV, 26 Jun 1982. Gregory was born in Reno, Washoe Co., NV 19 Jul 1954. She married John Warren Bell in Genoa, NV, 24 Jul 1993. John was born in Berwyn, Cook Co., IL 24 Jan 1946. John graduated from Augustana College in 1968 with a BA in geology. He was in the Army from 1969 until 1971, and spent 1970 in Viet Nam. He received a master's degree in geology from Arizona State U. in 1974. John has worked as an engineering geolgist for the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology since 1976. Melissa is secretary to the Dean at the Mackay School of Mines at the University of Nevada, Reno. Her family enjoys going to Oakland A's games, hiking, playing basketball and travelling. The boys enjoy baseball, wrestling and basketball. The family spent a year in Stasbourg, France, and the boys are now fluent in French.

She married twice. She married David Lord in Oakland, Alameda Co., CA, 1988. She married Walter Edward "Chip" Anderson in Livermore, Alameda Co., CA, 17 May 1997.(48) Walter was born in Fremont, Alameda Co., CA 3 Mar 1963.(49) Walter is the son of Walter Anderson and Sue Leach. Chip is a fireman. Kerri attended Carson City schools, and graduated from the University of California/Hayward with a degree in recreational leadership. She is currently director of a child care center for the City of Livermore. Her family enjoys most sports, including softball, golf and skiing, camping and travel.
