Tractor Accident Kills Stewart, 58
A former Monroe county resident, Elbert
Stewart, 58 of near Altoona, received fatal injuries Monday when
the tractor he was operating overturned.
Stewart lived here before moving to Altoona about 30 years
ago. The son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Stewart, he was born Feb
20, 1906, in Monroe county.
Surviving are his widow, the former Roberta Humphrey of
Albia; three daughters, Mrs. Joyce Glenn and Mrs. Rosalie Stone
of Mitchelville and Mrs. Sue Caviness of Charleston S. C., three
sons, Capt Jene Stewart stationed in Oklahoma, Lester Stewart
of Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., and Jerry Stewart of Des Moines
and 12 grandchildren.
Other survivers include five sisters, Mrs. Frank (Hazel)
Murfin of Ottumwa, Mrs. Fern Smith of Burlington, Mrs. Floyd
Bettis of Albia, Mrs. Tom (Lena) Maddison of Des Moines and Mrs.
Leonard (Opal) Sammon of Kansas; and two brothers, Roy Stewart
and Cecil Stewart, both of the Quad Cities area. He was preceede
in death by two brothers, Earl and Glen and a sister, Mrs. marie
Bettis.
The funeral was at 1:30 p.m. today at the Methodist church
at Ivy, Iowa, with burial there.
