In 1668, he was exiled from the colony for physically and verbally abusing his wife and mother-in-law. Although no direct explanation has been found, it is believed that this is the reason that all of his children used the 'Van Steenbergh' surname." (Why the name Van Steenbergh was chosen is not known).3

Will*Joseph Wing prepared a will on 31 January 1775 it is on record in Barnstable Court, dated 12th month, 1774. "His wife, Mary, was his executor and he mentions his sons, Joseph and James. His real estate inventoried at 800 [pounds], and his personal property at 114, 17s, 9d."1 
Note*Joseph "was one of the selectimen appointed by King George III to conduct the public affairs of the town of New Bedford. His commission, having the coat of arms of England and the seal and signature of the king, is still in the possession of a descendant..."3

He died ... five years after his marriage, and in his 29th year, leaving a widow and three children -- one of whom was born five months after his death. His widow, Dorothy, was appointed adminstratrix of his estate by the Plymouth court, Dec. 22, 1715. After remaining the widow of Joseph ... In September [of 1740] she united with her second husband, Jashub [Wing], in giving a deed of lands in Rochester of Joseph Wing, 'former husband of said Dorothy and father of William, Joseph, and Elizabeth' to the three children named."1

This is not logical because she would have been only 10 years old at the time of her marriage. Moreover, her age was 92, per the 1850 Census.
