Life Events

Birth*11 September 1837; Clinton (Town of), Dutchess, New York
Note*Unmarried. The following story appears in family records. However, it has been questioned by a Civil War researcher who claims it is not possible, since the date precedes any military activity that could have resulted in Philander having been taken prisoner. Moreover, oter information has been found stating that he died of disease. Therefore, this story is highly questionable but recorded here because future researchers may find it of value: Philander died of starvation. When he was released from prison, he was fed a hearty meal and died as a result, having had nothing but gruel for several months.2,3,4

Neither the geographic origin nor the parents of Henry are confirmed. Further research is needed, especially in Olpe, where a birth/baptismal record showing the most likely birth is found, and also in Leipzig, where records for the Kingdom of Saxony (Königreich Sachsen) can be found. We do not know if there were two men with the same name, approximately the same age, same occupation who arrived in the same year from Sachsen, or if our Henry made two trips. One Henry apparently settled early in Bergen, NJ; the other lived in NY, went to Oregon and then to NJ after 1890 when his wife died. This second man was my great grandfather.

Euro-Origin*Westfalen, Prussia, Germany; So far, the closest match to a September 1847 birth date (per 1900 Census) is the one shown as his Birth* record, below. Because so many Tigges family members came from the Lienen area, I have to consider that as a possible origin for Henrich. Marriage records for Lienen do not seem to be available. However, it appears that "everyone with the surname Tigges from Lienen could trace their roots back to Tigges Borger (SourceL K954022 1711-1778 Call No.: 0526267 Evangelisch, Lienen, Westfalen, Preussen: Father Tigges Borger, mother Elsabe Witte, daughter Elisabel Tigges Borger christened 3 Apr 1715)." One possible reason for a different location could be religion, since the Kirchhundem family was Catholic while the Lienen family was Protestant.

However, a noted German genealogist (Ernest Thode) has recommended that I focus on the east German Saxony area because of his ship's passenger arrival record. Of course, we also have to consider the possibility that Henry was living in Sachsen at the time of his departure for America, but was born elsewhere.

-Meanwhile, I include below other possible baptismal records from the appropriate time frame in hopes of one day finding his birth, baptism and/or parents.6
Baptism-Alt23 May 18455
Baptism-Alt18 November 1846; Roemisch-Katholisch, Steinheim, Westphalen, Preusen, Germany; Or he was baptized 27 Feb 1847 Evangelische, Heiden, Lippe where the child is named Heinrich Adolph Tigges and mother is Anne Marie Tigges (no father shown). Or he was baptized 30 May 1847 Evangelische, Lienen, Westfalen, Preussen (now Bavaria), where he is named Heinrich Rudolph Tigges and his parents are Wilhelm and Sophie Kraemer.7,8,9,10,6
Baptism-Alt30 May 1847; Evangelische, Lienen, Westfalen, Prussia, Germany11
Baptism-Alt22 July 1847; Katholisch, Bigge, Westphalen, Prussia, Germany4
Birth*14 October 1847; According to the 1900 Census, Henry was born in September 1847. This is the best fit, according to LDS records on FamilySearch.org, if we accept the fact that the baprismal date is correct but that the birth date was recorded incorrectly.3
Baptism15 October 1847; Kirchundem, Olpe, Westphalen, Prussia3
Immigration12 January 1866; Again, we have two immigration records. Both show place of origin as Sachsen. The first is Manifest ID number: 00030297; Name: Heinrich Tigges; Age: 18; Gender: Male; Occupation: Painter; Last Residence: U? (Prussia listed for others on manifest); Place of origin: Sachsen; Date of arrival: 12 Jan 1866; Final Destination: New York; Purpose for Travel: Staying in the USA; Port of Embarkation: Antwerp; Mode of Travel: Steerage. He was traveling alone. Per Don Tigges.12
Immigration*1 December 1866; New York, New York, New York; The second immigration record is dated 1 Dec 1866 and shows Henrich Tigges - Occupation: Painter; age 18; sex M; Literacy: U; Origin Saxony, Germany; Port Bremerhaven. A passenger list shows him traveling alone on the ship, Kosmos, Line 31, from Bremerhaven, origin Sachsen, Microfilm Serial M237, roll 274, List Number 1323.13,14
NoteI am unable to tell which of these immigration records applies to our Henry, or indeed if either of them does. Or could he have made two trips? No birth or baptismal record has been found in Saxony records online.
Note10 March 1872; Manhattan, New York, New York; A Heinrich Wilhelm Tigges was married in Manhattan to Meta Schierenbeck. His parents were Johann H. Tigges and Elizabeth Deckenbroock. Meta's parents were Selcke Schierenbeck and Margaretha Boering.( This man's profile is recorded separately in this database.)15
Marriage*before 27 December 1875; Principal=Augusta* Ernestine Stark
Census1880; Portland, Multnomah, Oregon; Note spelling of name on census transcription at FamilySearch is DEUS instead of Tigges. Henry is age 35, from Prussia, and working as a barber. He is living in his father-in-law's home with his wife Gussie b. Prussia and daughter Mary b. New York.16
Note*1890; Portland City Directory, Portland, Multnomah, Oregon; Henry is working as a barber for Miller & Johnson in rooms 327 Front.17
Census*1900; Hoboken, Hudson, New Jersey; This Henry was born Sep 1847 and is a barber, married to Katherine, living in Hoboken, NJ (probably my great grandfather).18
Census1900; Westwood Borough, Bergen, New Jersey; This is probably not our Henry, although there are many similarities. This census entry shows him as age 53, a boarder, a barber assistant, b. Dec 1846 in Germany, and immigrated 1866 (34 years in U.S.A.). This "other" Henry is in an 1875 Newark, NJ City Directory and in Bergen, NJ in the 1900 Census. Our Henry appears to be the one shown as married in Hoboken, NJ in 1897. He is on the 1900 census with wife Katherine in Hoboken, dies in Hoboken in 1904 and is buried in NY Bay Cemetery in Jersey City.19
Burial*1904; NY Bay Cemetery, Jersey City, Hudson, New Jersey20
Death*1904; Hoboken, New Jersey; having been run over by a vehicle while crossing the street.20
NoteHenry's lineage as stated here is tentative. I do not yet have sufficient proof. There are many baptismal records in theLDS church records, some Protestant and some Roman Catholic, in the same general time and place. Which is correct, or even if none, is entirely speculative.

Note*14 Nov 1997: I found Eunice Sylvester, age 89, living at 11917 SW Steamboat Drive, Beaverrton, OR 97008-7004, phone: 503-644-3070. She gave me much information and many photos. Her grandmother was Emma Stark, who married Rheinhold Sylvester. Her father was Fred Sylvester. According to her, Rheinhold ran away from home in Germany to avoid military service. He went to sea and eventually became a first mate. He was asked to become a captain but chose to give up the sea, saying he had been shipwrecked three times and was the only survivor twice. He was afraid his luck would run out. He then married Emma. They lived in New York and moved west in a covered wagon. They left Chicago a year after the Chicago Great Fire (10/8/1871) and arrived in Portland a year before the Portland Great Fire (8/2/1873).

This last sentence is probably not true, since it is likely the entire family moved west together after 1875. Since Carl Stark and Henry Tigges were both painters, it may be that the Great Fires sparked their interest in going west to find work in reconstruction after the fires.

Augusta was Emma's sister. There is also a Martha Piert living at 51567 Oak Grove Dr., Scappose, OR 97056, phone: 503-543-3928 who is related to me in the same way Eunice is on the Stark side.9
