January Herb Spikes I Arkel, nicknamed The Strong (ca. 1233 - Gorinchem, May 15, 1272) was lord of Arkel from 1253 to his death. Further possessions were Noordeloos, Mountain Craft, Heukelom, Hoogblokland, Slingelandt, Stolwijk and Willige Langerak.

Lifespan

He was a son of Herb Spikes II of Lede, founder of the glory of Arkel, and Aleid (Alverade) of Heusden.

Jan is first mentioned in a Latin chronicle from 1253, it says he is listed as the director John Miles Arkele (Jan, knight, lord of Arkel). Then he repeatedly mentioned in records on loans. In 1253 he and his brother Herb Spikes in a deed as a witness for John I of the pan. On June 25, 1254, Jan witnessed by an alliance of Jan van der Lede and Hugo van Arkel to Floris van Dalem possession of Dalem to forgive loan management [1]. He took part in the wars with the rebellious West Frisians, headed by his liege William II of Holland. Gets around 1260 the fief of den Berghe (contemporary Bergambacht) assigned by the County of Holland, which he gives loan to his brother Herb Egyptians. On October 29, 1263 January beleent one Otto with Slingelandt. On 23 August 1264 he grants together with Willem van Brederode the right to Henry of Alblas a water ditch or canal excavated (Jan will be the last time mentioned in a document [2].

Jan I was nicknamed The Strong, he would imagine the joke at the gate of Gorinchem built with his horse. In 1267 he began the construction of the castle of Gorinchem.

Marriage and children

John I married Bertha Baerte or from Ochten (ca. 1235 - ca 1285), daughter of Richolt I Ochten, Count of the Betuwe, and Marina of Bentheim, daughter of Otto I of Bentheim and Alveradis of Arnsberg (ca. 1160 - 1230). John and Bertha had three children:

Jan van Arkel and his wife was buried in a tomb in the church of Gorinchem. In 1604 the bones were removed and buried elsewhere.²

Biography

Herb Spikes II of Lede (Langerak c.1205 - before 1258) was lord of Ter Leede and 1234 from Mr van Arkel (Arcelo) and the surrounding land. He is mentioned in the following ways; Herb Spikes II van der Leede (Herbertus, Harbertus, The Initiations, The Leda, The Ledhe Van der Lede) in various chronicles.

He was a son of Floris Herb Spikes of Lede, who possessed the glory Lede (near present-day Leerdam).

Herb Egyptians were located between 1243 and 1253 Mr van Arkel call and let his domain Ter Leede after his younger brother in January This was Herb Egyptians the ancestor of the house Arkel.

In 1227 Herb Aren is knighted (listed among the 'Nobilis') [1], and increases with the Utrecht bishop Otto of Lippe part in the Battle of Ane, the battle is dramatically Herb Egyptians but manages to escape. In 1230 he receives the fief Heukelom assigned and he was also named as lord of Liesveld and Nieuwpoort [2]. Biography

Floris Herb Spikes of Lede (Latin; Florentius the Leda) (ca.1170 - ca.1207) was lord of the Lede from 1200 until his death.

He was a son of Herb Spikes I of the pan and a daughter of William van Altena. Floris is mentioned in a charter of Gelderland chronicle from 1204, he and his younger brother Folpert (Walpertus) receives the dominion of a small castle in Asperen [1] [2]. The same castle was destroyed during the Loon War by William I of Holland. In 1207 Floris signing certificate to surrender along with Ada of Holland and Louis II of Loon. That same year, Floris been killed by mercenaries of the king of England and the Count of Holland.

Floris married around 1200 with Jacomijn Schoonhoven, a daughter of Hugo Botter, Mr. Schoonhoven, they had four sons and one daughter:

Floris also had an illegitimate son, Samson van der Lede called. After the death of his brother Floris took Folpert between 1207 and 1212 the regency over the area of ??the pan on.²

Herbaren I van der Lede (Latijn; Harbernus de Leda (Liethen)) (Langerak, 1140 - omstreeks 1200) was heer van Ter Leede.

Herbaren I was de stamvader van het huis Ter Leede. Hij werd als getuige genoemd bij een samenkomst van Hardbertus, bisschop van Utrecht in 1143; mogelijk ging het hier om de doping van Herbaren. In een Hollandse kroniek wordt hij beschreven als Harbernus de Liethen, mogelijk gaat het over een vorm- of drukfout, want Liethen verwijst naar de oude benaming van Leiden[1]. Onder zijn leiding werd mogelijk het Mottekasteel gebouwd dat bij het recht van ter Leede stond (enkele kilometers ten zuiden van Leerbroek).[2] Wordt genoemd als ambachtsheer van Haastrecht.

Herbaren huwde met Adelheid een dochter van Willem van Altena en zij kregen minstens twee zonen:[3]
