Note*Another researcher has added this bio to this person's tree at Wikitree.com:

Englebert Huff was born about 1687. In his early years, Englebert lived in Philipse Manor, later known as Tarrytown in Westchester County near New York. He was described as "a man of considerable local celebrity for his scholarship and dashing horsemanship".

Englebert moved north and was one of the early white settlers in the area now known as Dutchess County, New York. He married Maria Williams (Marritje Willemse) about 1706 in Dutchess Co., New York. Their fourth of nine children was Willem.

Marie died in 1732 at the age of 42. Englebert died on 21 Mar 1765 in Fishkill (Hopewell), New York.

He died as a result of a hip wound incurred in a fall from his horse in the town of Fishkill. He was buried near the East wall of the First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Fishkill Town . There is a silver commemorative tankard in the church with an interesting inscription:

"Presented by Samuel Verplanck Esq.,to the First Reformed Dutch Church in the town of Fishkill, to commemorate Mr. Englebert Huff by birth a Norwegian, in his lifetime attached to the life guards of the Prince of Orange, afterwards King William (III) of England. He resided for a number of years in this country and died with unblemished reputation at Fishkill, 21st March 1765, aged 128 years"

The oldest stone now standing in the churchyard is dated 1737. The Huffs don’t show on the list of legible gravestones.

Name

Name: Englebert /Huff/
Name: Englebert /Hoff/
Found multiple versions of NAME. Using Englebert /Huff/ . The origin of the surname Huff may be from the Germanic personal name Hufo, a short form of a compound name formed with hug ‘heart’, ‘mind’, ‘spirit’ as the first element .

The surname Huff is not to be confused with the surname Hoff. "Hoff" appears to have originated a few hundred years ago. The word "Hof" in German literally means merely a "court", or courtyard or any "enclosure". Paulus Durckse (Hoff) adopted the surname "Hoff" after arrival in America in about 1651.

Note*Another researcher has added this bio to Leonard's profile at Wikitree:

Some say that Leonardt was born in Norway – but he is more likely to have been Dutch or German. He may have been born in 1637 and emigrated to the US. He was the father of Englebert.

He may have “served in the Dutch Military, in the army of William of Orange who later became King William (III) of England, He escaped from the ship of Van Couwenhoven when stationed at Wappingers, during the Esopus Wars in 1662.

The Dutch adventurer, David Devries, wrote in his journal on first exploring the Mohawk River, North of New Amsterdam - "We came to Esoops, where a creek runs in and there the savages had much maize-land but all somewhat stony."

Ignoring the local Indians, some 60 Fort Orange settlers moved South and formed a village, seizing the local native's lands. The village was named Esopus after the creek which fed into the nearby River. They began to farm the area and for a while, relations with the Indians were peaceful.

The Esopus Indians began to resent the Dutch Seizure of property rights and their arrogant taking of natives as slaves. The two sides squared off in a series of bloody encounters, which became known as the Esopus Wars” 1655-1664.

23.3 Dutchess County
Prior to Anglo-Dutch settlement inDutchess County, the land was an important area for the native Wappinger peoples. They had their council-fire at what is now called Fishkill Hook.

The Wappinger were a confederacy of Native Americans whose territory in the 17th century spread along the eastern bank of the Hudson River. Primarily based in what is now Dutchess County, New York, their territory bordered Manhattan Island to the south, the Mahican territory bounded by the Roeliff-Jansen Kill to the north, and extended east into parts of Connecticut.

The Wappinger were not organized into cohesive tribes; instead, they formed approximately 18 loosely associated bands. They were closely related to the Lenape, both being members of the Eastern Algonquian-speaking subgroup of the Algonquian peoples. The Lenape and Wappinger spoke using very similar Delawarean languages.

The first contact with Europeans came in 1609, during Henry Hudson's expedition. As the Dutch began to settle in the area, they pressured the Connecticut Wappinger to sell their lands and seek refuge with other Algonquian-speaking tribes. The western bands, however, stood their ground amidst rising tensions.

During Kieft's War in 1643, the remaining Wappinger bands united against the Dutch, attacking settlements throughout New Netherland. Allied with their trading partners, the powerful Mohawk, the Dutch defeated the Wappinger by 1645. The Mohawk and Dutch killed more than 1500 Wappinger in the two years of the war. This was a devastating toll for the Wappinger, whose population in 1600 was estimated at 3,000.

The Wappinger faced the Dutch again in the 1655 Peach Tree War, a three-day engagement which left an estimated 100 settlers and 60 Wappinger dead, and strained relations further between the two groups. After the war, many of the surviving Wappinger left their native lands for the protection of neighboring tribes.

In 1683, the Province of New York established its first twelve counties, with Dutchess County being one of them.

In the twelve years from 1685-1697, lawful patents were granted securing for their purchasers every foot of Hudson River shoreline in the original county. Three additional patents, to 1706, laid claim to the remaining interior lands. 1685 Rombout (Beacon/ Fishkill Area)- Huffs farmed here 1686 Minisink 1686 Kip 1688 Schuyler (Poughkeepsie) 1688 Schuyler (Red Hook) 1688 Ærtsen-Roosa-Elton 1696 Pawling-Staats 1697 Rhinebeck 1697 (Great) Nine Partners 1697 Philipse Manor – Huff, Foseur, Rutan 1697 Cuyler 1703 Fanconnier 1703 Beekman (Back Lots)- Clapps farmed here 1706 (Little) Nine Partners – Leavens farmed in one of the nine partners

From 1683-1725, most of the settlers in Dutchess County were Dutch immigrants who came up the Hudson River in search of a place to make a living. By 1716, there were sufficient settlers to form their own Dutch Reformed church so they would not have to cross the river to Kingston or New Paltz to worship. In that year, two congregations were established on October 10th: one in Poughkeepsie and one in Fishkill.

Fishkill's church building was finished in 1731. The first Dominie (minister) who arrived from the Netherlands in 1731 to serve both churches received an annual salary of 70 pounds.2
