Dean Family Land Records!

On this page you will find all the old Land records that I have found during my research of the bloodline.  I have only included Land Records that meet the following criteria:

    1. The property had to be either bought or sold by a Deane/Dean, and
    2. The property had to be named or include the acreage.

While this may at first glance seem arbitrary, it's purpose is to weed out of the old records items that have less significance than ownership of land, such as witnessing a land transfer, etc., of which there are many instances.  While it would be nice to include them in a separate section, I have not yet had a chance to attempt such an undertaking.

I have included the sources of these land records, which are deciphered as follows:

## OLD ## denotes the actual land record in the Dorchester County Circuit Courthouse (most of these are now on microfilm) in Cambridge, MD.

Date, which is in standard genealogical format, and

Summary of the contents of the land record itself.

These land records are in the order in which they are recorded.  While the chronology and the order of recording does not agree, this is because the land records were not recorded chronologically.  In some cases they were recorded 3 or 4 months after the actual transaction as they took place in parts of the county not easily accessible to a central location.

Note: Most of the records here are from "Land Records Abstracts for Dorchester County" as compiled by James A. McAllister, Jr., Dorchester County Public Library, Maryland Room, Call# 333.30975MV1, and have been double-checked by myself against the actual records for accuracy.

Others are from the research done by Frederick Edward Wright and Henry C. Peden, Jr., from their series of books, "The Colonial Families of the Eastern Shore, Volume 11" due in print this summer (2001).  I had pre-publication review of this material from the authors for accuracy and any additional comments I would like to add!   A rare treat indeed!  My additional comments, etc., are to be included in the Second Edition of the Volume. These entries will be denoted in purple-faced type.
