He was a physician, merchant, farmer and post master.

He owned the first general store in Laurel Gap, now

Balileyton, Green Co., TN. He was a Union sympathizer.

It is thought that he was shot and killed on his porch

by Confederates under Gen. John Hunt Morgan.

Speculation: He may have been shot defending his son,

Hiram F. Strong, then convalescing in the house.

Hiram F. Strong

dod: 25 Feb 1864

m: 19 Dec 1861, Martha Jane Jones [b.1845; d.1897. After

the death of Hiram F. Strong,

Martha married 2nd, William Hawkins. ]

Note: On July 25, 1863, he and his brother William Strong joined

the Union Army and served in Co. H, 8th Tennessee Infantry

Regiment. He was mustered in at Camp Nelson, KY and

on Jan.20, 1864 they supposedly deserted, but it seems that

Hiram became ill and was taken home by his brother. He

was captured from his sick bed on Feb.6, 1864 and

confined at Richmond, VA on Feb 17, 1864. On Feb 18th,

he was taken to an Augusta, GA hospital where he died on

the 25th of an unknown disease. Hiram is buried in the

National Cemetery in Augusta, GA.
