Strong DNA Project Results page:
DNA #176710

Haplogroup: R1b1b2
Updated to 24 June 2010

There has long been a hypothesis  that the "Southern" or "Virginia" Strongs are somehow related to the "New England" or
"Elder John Strong" lineage. Recently, DNA testing has revealed that these lineages are rather distinct genetically, and that
this hypothesis in not true.   Testing of the male Y-Chromosome conducted by the LeStrange Strange Strang Stronge Strong
Surname Project using facilities offered through Family Tree DNA has shown that, while the lineages may have a common
origin in the distant past, the DNA Haplotype differences between the Southern and the New England Strong lineages are far
enough apart to establish that there is no relationship within a genealogically significant timeframe.
Reference to the Strong DNA Project Results page, shows the differences  between the haplotypes for various
lineages for which there have been test participants.  Comparing the first 25 markers for the New England and the Southern
lineages, and using FTDNA's preferred method of calculating genetic distance, there is a genetic distance of as much as 7
between the apparent Modal Ancestral Haplotypes for the two lineages.
Referring to FTDNA's guidance page at:   http://www.familytreedna.com/GDRules_25.html
one finds a genetic distance of 7 over 25 markers indicates the lineages are totally unrelated, although we  should assume
they allow for the progenitor of the R1b1 haplogroup to qualify as a common ancestor . That is somewhat akin to saying all
R1b1 haplogroup members are descended from "Adam and Eve R1b1", and is genealogically insignificant.   Even if the genetic
distance was only 5, they probably still did not share a common ancestor during the past 5,000 years.  Thus, even if there was
a common male ancestor in the far distant past, he was not even a Strong, since surnames have only been in use for the
last 800 years or so.
