Introduction
This story of the Braggs from 1700 to 2000 is the result of about 4 years research, chasing up records, butting our heads up against brick walls and following the occasional red herring.
The main focus of the research has been Philip Bragg (1795 - 1875), who was the first Bragg of this branch to arrive in Australia. He did that in 1833 aboard the Sir Joseph Banks, travelling with his wife and their first five children.
Philip was a Butcher and so have many of his descendants been Butchers, though until a few years ago Philip's existance was not even known. This, together with other similarities we encountered, has made his story a very interesting one, especially as he ended his days in a little settlement just south of Christchurch, New Zealand - four hours south of where a junior member of this branch has recently moved to.
The following is the story of these Braggs from Philip's great grandfather through to Philip's great grandchildren. Also included is an ancestor tree and family group sheet for Philip, as well as a report which contains the details known of ALL his descendants, down to his great, great, great, great grandchildren.
There are still some gaps but the bulk of the story is now known.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thankyou to Lola Bragg in Bundaberg, the wife of Frederick William Bragg, for her enormous efforts and help in providing us information on a 'lost' branch of the family. Also, Christine in Adelaide, who 'obtained' photographs and information which were needed to complete this story. If you wish to contribute anything or correct errors, our contact details are as follows
