Daniel Gallagher snr

Daniel Gallagher snr is the earliest Galwolie Gallagher I have anything on. He was born abt 1774 and died in 1862, aged 88 years. His wife's name was Margaret and she was born abt  1785. She died quite early - it was 1826 and she was only 41 years old. The house they lived in and raised their children in is still standing - and still occupied. The large barn that is evident on the 1835 Ordnance Survey map is also still standing and in use. Photographs of both can be found on the Galwolie Photographs page.

The earliest 'official' record I found for Dan snr is the 1834 Tithe Applotment book, which has him holding, with his son Dan jnr, :

14 0 01 arp arable land
11 2 15 arp pasture
24 3 27 arp mountain grazing
Total in holding = 50 2 03 arp

For this they paid an annual rent of £14 19s 6p. The 1857 Griffith's Valuation details Dan snr's holding as Plot 5, a house, outbuildings and 36 0 10 arp of land - for a map showing the location of this plot, see the Galwolie OS Map

The names of only two of Dan snr and Margaret's children are known - Dan jnr and Michael - whose stories are continued below.

Dan snr and Margaret are buried in the Kilteevoge graveyard, Cloghan - see the Kilteevoge graveyard

Daniel Gallagher jnr, son of Daniel Gallagher snr and Margaret

Daniel Gallagher jnr was born abt 1803 and died 14 Feb 1883, aged 80 years. His wife's name was Susan, born abt 1815, dying 20 Jan 1897, aged 82 years. Some time, probably shortly after marrying Susan, Daniel jnr built a house and erected farm buildings in an area in front of his father's house, closer to the road which runs through Galwolie. The original plot was split and the 1857 Griffith's Valuation details his holding as Plot 6, a house, outbuildings and 29 acres of land - for a map showing the location of this plot, see the Galwolie OS Map

Dan jnr and Susan had at least 4 children - Mary, Michael, Peter and Anne Jane.

When Dan jr died in 1883, Letters of Administration were drawn up and lodged in Londonderry. This was normally done to keep the family home and lands in the hands of that family - at that time, Donegal was still held by landlords, the native Irish population not being able to own their land. The details of Dan jnr's Letters of Administration -
