1820 - U .S Census for Oglethorpe Co. Lists JESSE PETERS, SR. as Head of Household.
Enumeration as follows:2 Males Under 10 1 Female Under 10 1 Male 10-16 1 Female 10-16 1 Male 18-26 1 Female 26-45 1 Male 45 & Over 1 Female 45 & Over This Enumeration may have included JESSE Sr & JESSE Jr, although ages of all members are not exact. The use of Sr after JESSE'S name indicates there was a younger JESSE in the local area. Although this did not necessarily denote Father/Son, in this case it most likely did due to the following reasons:
1) JESSE, Jr. Was married and had a family in 1820, yet he appears on no census as Head of Household.
2) JESSE, Jr. Was a resident of Oglethorpe Co. during the WAR OF 1812, was married there and appears continuously on the Tax Rolls from 1813 through 1822. However, the Tax Rolls also showed no ownership of property during 1817 - 1819 - 1820, He paid only a POLL TAX for those years.
3) The Estate Records for ELIJAH PETERS include both JESSE PETERS, Sr. and JESSE PETERS, Jr. (See entry for July, 1820)
1820 - (Cont.) On January 4, JESSE applied for letters of Administration forth Estate of ELIJAH PETERS, his brother. (Ordinary Minutes), Oglethorpe Co., On the first Monday in July from the Ordinary Minutes, Oglethorpe Co.: Ordered that Administration of the Estate Of ELIJAH PETERS - DEC: Be Granted Unto JESSE PETERS and JESSE PETERS - JUNE: Came into court and entered himself in the sum of One Hundred Dollars For The Faithful Performance of The Above Trust and The Adm'r. Was Sworn According to Law.
(NOTE: The original letters of Administration are on file The Ga State Archives under Oglethorpe Co. Loose Papers.)1821 - Listed as a defaulter on the Oglethorpe Co. Tax Digest. This was the last year he appears on the Oglethorpe Co. Tax Rolls.
1822 - On July 23, JESSE PETERS Sr. (Estate of ELIJAH PETERS for board and attendance during sickness 3 months before his death. JESSE appeared before the court and swore that the trouble and expense of said ELIJAH PETERS Dec: During his last illness was reasonably worth the above amount of Eighty Dollars.
1823 - On June 21, Shiloh Church (Primitive Baptist) was organized. Among Charter Members were JESSE PETERS, MARTHA PETERS, and RHODY PETERS (RHODA WATSON, Wife of JOHN PETERS). This Church was located in Walton Co., just across the Gwinnett Co. line and near present-day Loganville. RICHARD KINNON for $300.
(Walton Co. Deeds, Book F, p.425)1827 - Georgia Land Lottery - As a resident of WALTON Co. Drew Troupe Co., 202 acres, signed December, 1831. He was listed as a REVOLUTIONARY WAR Soldier.
1828 - On February 6, Signed Deed of Gift To Son WILLIAM M. PETERS which included 100 acres, stock and household items. This Document proves the relationship between JESSE and WILLIAM M. as father/son.
(See Walton Co. Deeds, Bk. H, pp. 66-67)On December 31, sold 150 acres in Walton Co. To ISHAM PETERS for the sum of $5.00. ISHAM could possibly be a son of JESSE, SR. born after 1800.
(See Walton Co. Deeds, Bk. H, p. 94)1830 - U.S. Census for Walton Co., GA - Believe JESSE to be the 70-80 year old living in the household of WILLIAM M. PETERS (his son). This is the only enumeration in the entire state that lists a possible male PETERS in that age group. Moreover, given his advanced age, it was quite likely he was living with family. His wife MARTHA does not appear in any records after 1823 and it is assumed she died between 1823 and 1830.
1833 - On September 2, then a resident of Carroll Co., Ga, He applied for a REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION UNDER THE ACT OF 1832. His age was given as 81. He had been stricken from the previous Pension Roll for reasons unknown. This second application was approved and papers are on file in The National Archives, #S16506. (When requesting copies, be sure to specify, Elected and non-selected.
1839 - Final entry on pension records shows last payment period ended September, 1838 and Agent was Notified June 17, 1839. Based upon his age and absence from the 1840 Census, it is a reasonably safe assumption that he died sometime between 1838 and the first half of 1839. No marked grave has been located.
