Letter to Sister from A. S. Vickrey - 15 July 1863

                                                                        Montgomery County Va
                                                                        July 15th 1863

Dear Sister

I now seat myself for the purpose of writing you a few lines to let you know that I am well at this time and hope these few will find you all enjoying good health.  I have enjoyed myself first rate since I left and have seen some curious senes [sic] I can tell you Thomas is well all except his feet.   They are very sore but are not quite so sore as they were yesterday.  We have not met with any resistance in the least.  I think in a few days we will be out of danger and we have not had to expose our selves any yet and I think that under all circumstances we will reach Charleston this week.  We are now in about 40 or 50 miles of the lines but we will have a more laborious task of travelling as we will have to take it a foot a cross the mountains and the general belief here is that the war will not last much longer.  I have found hundreds of friends even in va.  Tell the boys if they can stay at home they had better for from the sentiment of the virginians that the war will end before a great while.  tell Uncle dave that we are all right and that he must stick to the # [looks like an o inside a #] for we are making he knows what as we have the # [looks like a # with a roof on it followed by a rough drawing - maybe a hand] with us.  tell Aunt Lydia Bartley's folks we are all right so far but to keep in our coures [sic] and direction we will get some where in a few days three or four.  tell if you hear any of them talking of taking a trimp [sic - trip?] to be on their guard about Mt. Airy as there is some little danger there.  we have never been asked for any papers yet and if we had it would have been the same thing.  you must know who you show this too.  dont let the news carries see it.  tell Elkanah that there is some caps [?] at grand mothers for him.  I forgot them so no more at this time.

        This from your affectionate Brother
