The townland of Ringclare is described in the 1800’s as being bounded to the West and South by bogland. The name therefore probably refers to Ringclare as a promontory of good land into the bogland.
The name probably arises from the location in Tullymurry of a devotional shrine to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Muire is the special form of the name Máire (Mary) used only in reference to Our Lady.
