The Canadian Ruddick's
Andrew
Ruddick born: about 1799 in Ringclare, Donaghmore Parish, Co. Down was married
to Dinah McConnell born: 1798 in Ringclare, Donaghmore
Pairsh, Co. Down in 1820 according to Church Records.
Andrew,
we think is brother of Robert Ruddock. Dinah is sister to Hannah
McConnell.
According
to a family letter that is posted here on the site, the marriage of Dinah to
Andrew caused Dinah's family to strongly disapprove of the
marriage. The reason given was that Andrew was from
"planter" family roots and below the McConnell (Hamilton?) family
level status. The McConnell (Hamilton?) connections being to
"privileged or royal" status. Dinah's mother appears to
have been a Hamilton. The Hamilton name appears in Andrew's and Dinah's
decendents, frequently.
Due
to the McConnell family's strong disapproval of the marriage, Andrew and Dinah
decided to move to St. John's, New Brunswick, Canada, shortly after the
ceremony.
Andrew
and Dinah stayed in the St. John's area and raised there family there.
A
few years later, a Dr. William Ruddick born: before 1798 of Ringclare, came to
St. John's and settle there too. We believe William was a cousin to
Andrew and Robert. Information on Dr. William is in the letter mentioned
above as well.
As
none of Andrew and Dinah's children were born in Ireland, none of them are
shown in this write up.
The
variances of the spelling of Ruddock/Ruddick are many and we feel quite common
occurances due to the many spellings found in the same family in records
found.
