The Epes ancestors came from Kent County, England, Francis I being the first
to settle in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. No record of the date or the
name of the ship he sailed on has been found, but it is assumed to be before
April 1625. He was married to Maria - last name not documented, but
assumed to be Pawlett. Francis was baptized on 14 May 1597 - no record of
his birth. Records indicate that he was dead by 30 Sep 1674.
The Arms & Crest of the Ancient Family of Epes was exemplified, ratified and confirmed about 1619, to the family forever. They were of the County of Kent where they have inhabited for many generations. There is a picture of it in the Vol. I of "Ancestors and Descendants of Francis Epes I of Virginia, edited by J. F. Dorman, Certified Genealogist.
