During my research on this family in September, 2000, I once again went over the census records of Washington County, VA - years 1820, 1830 & 1840. In the 1820 census, there was a DORINGHER family with JOHN as the head of the household, listed as 45 & up, a female listed as 45 & up, and two males between ages 16-18. All four were listed as being born in Germany and classified as four foreigners.
The 1830 census listed the same surname spelled DORINGHER as a household. In this household is listed as WILLIAM, male 20-30, female 30-40, 2 males & 2 females under 5, 1 female 5-10, 1 male 70-80. There were two 'aliens' in the household. From this I would assume that JOHN, the father, age 70-80 would be one 'alien' and WILLIAM age 20-30 would be the other 'alien'. That is if he hadn't become a citizen by then.
The next household is JOHN DORINGHER with 1 male, age 20-30, 1 female age 20-30, 1 male under 5.
The 1840 census still has the 'unknown male' age 80-90 living with William. Based upon this info, I am assuming that WILLIAM & JOHN's parents came to America with both boys in the age group 16-18, before or by the time the 1820 census was taken.
Apparently by 1830, the Mother had died and the Father, JOHN Sr was living with William, Catherine & family. This would also prove that if William & John were 16-18 - ten years later, they would be in the 20-30 age group as indicated by the 1830 census.
I do not have a clue as to where CATHERINE was when the 1820 census was taken. Hopefully somehow, some of us can put all the pieces together. In some of the DOLINGER bibles, notations have been made as to the original story which is listed below. However, no proof has been found. Perhaps someone could find the citizenship records in Washington or Grayson counties for WILLIAM & JOHN, as by 1840, they were no longer listed as foreigners or aliens. © 2000 Submitted by Lila H. William Winton Dolinger (Döllinger) immigrated from Bavaria, Germany about 1820. There have been no records found as to when and where he married Catherine Long, who also was born in Germany. We haven't been able to find any information on their parents or siblings with the exception of one brother, JOHN DOLINGER who also settled in Washington County, VA.
There are several stories regarding William and Catherine's marriage/travel to America. Catherine's Mother was from the Netherlands. Her Father was supposedly wealthy and William was a commoner. It has been said that he gave them money for passage to American and to purchase land. It's also rumored that Catherine stole gold coins to pay for their passage. Apparently they sailed to Pennsylvania and later traveled to Southwest Virginia where they settled in Washington County, VA. No records have been found about the ship they sailed on or the port where they landed. We haven't found any records to substantiate the above. William was a farmer, bought property in Grayson County, Virginia on 27 March 1843, where they lived on a farm in the Park Community. He was a Primitive Baptist and fathered twelve children with Catherine.
This is our "brick wall" and any help would be appreciated. Please contact Lila at: E-Mail
