What's New

Saturday, 28-Apr-2012 02:20:59 MDT

April 27, 2012 Gary Edward Barber is a very close match to James Barber for 67 markers, we just don't know exactly how. Sorry for the delay in updating this page, I have been building a Markham-Barber Family Tree page on Ancestry. I've pretty much gotten it built now, and I've found out a bunch of new things on the family, thanks to the green leaf HINTS Ancestry gives us. So I guess spending all that money is worth it. I wish I could say the same for the ipad I bought on March 15, 2012. I still don't know how to use it. It is gathering dust under my desk. Anyway, the "Who Do you Think you are" tv show on Rob Lowe tonight was very interesting. He found out that his ancestor was a Hessian soldier who fought for the British in the American Revolution, but, because he paid a tax to further the cause of the Revolution after staying in America, he was declared a patriot by the DAR. I wonder if the DAR had done the same if it wasn't a famous actor. And the person that contributed the document to the DAR was Josh Taylor, the young man who was the parliamentarian for the USGenWeb Project a few years ago.

March 2, 2012 Thanks to Gary Edward Barber, we know that William Barber (who married Rachel Daniell), Littleton Barber (son of Asa Barber?), Moses Barber of Chatham County NC, and our James Barber who married Penelope are all related. We are just not sure exactly how. But the William Barber who married Rachel Daniell is believed to be a son of William Barber Jr and the grandson of Wiliam Barber Sr of Chatham County, NC, who earlier lived in Orange and Onslow counties in NC. Asa and Moses are possibly also from the William Barber Sr family, and James is possibly a son of Aaron Barber, the brother of William Barber Sr.

We are waiting for Gary's 67 markers DNA test to come back. He matches with 35 out of 37 markers with Arthur, Jimmie, Charles, and Brian.

February 23, 2012 Gary Edward Barber, a descendant of William Barber and Rachell Daniell, is an exact match for 12 markers with Arthur Bud Barber II, John Wiley "Jack" Barber, Jimmie D. Barber, Donald Orville Barber, and Brian Keith Brooking. Arthur, Jack, Jimmie and Donald are all descendants of James and Penelope Barber, and Brian Keith is a descendant of Littleton Barber.

So we know that James Barber, William Barber, Moses Barber and Littleton Barber (possible son of Asa) are all related, most likely back in Chatham County, North Carolina. We are just not sure how, as yet.

January 21, 2012 Gary Edward Barber has received his kit from Family Tree DNA and will be mailing it back in on Monday. He is a descendant of William Barber and Rachel Daniell. So we will soon know if William Barber that married Rachel Daniell is related to James Barber who married Penelope.

December 15, 2011 Oh HAPPY DAY! I think I have discovered the parents and grandparents of George Barber, who died in Augusta County, Virginia in 1750!

I have also found a typed copy of the will of Matthew Patton, and added it to Chapter 1.

July 22, 2011 Arthur Bud Barber Sr died July 20, 2011. He was the father of Sherry Grant and Arthur Bud Barber II. His obit. Also Chapter 15.

July 5, 2001 Folks, if you are going to make copies of my book, please do me the courtesy of leaving my name on it. If you are making a copy of the book I published in 1975, a simple note saying "Published by David W Morgan" will do. If you are copying from my online book, a url to my book at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dmorgan/ would be much appreciated. Otherwise, it is outright theft.

June 23, 2011 I am currently uploading Records and Briefs of the Unites States Supreme Court, Vol 174, which concerns the Barber and Posey families, and the denial of their admission to the Creek Nation as Indian by blood, for most of them.

June 13, 2011 I recently made contact with two descendants of Benjamin A Barber, who was a brother of my James Monroe Barber. (chapter 14). They are Christle Speegle and Michelle Cagle. Yea!

May 30, 2011 Cousin Stephen P Barber earned his Ph.D in 2011 from Auburn University, and cousin Jeremy P Fyke earned his Ph.D in 2011 from Purdue University.

May 22, 2011 The world didn't end yesterday, so I feel free to post. I have been in contact with Tom Watson, a descendant of Plyer Barber and Amy thru their son Thomas Barber who married Elizabeth Langdon.

May 18, 2011 I have heard from Dr. Gary White, who is a descendant of Matthew Barber, chapter 2.

May 12, 2011 I've been doing extensive updates to the Gray Barber family, primarily to James S Barber.

May 1, 2011 Osama bin Laden is dead!

March 28, 2011 In the last few days, I have helped Thomas Markley find his Brooks ancestry. His is 74 and didn't much about it. I was able to help him, thanks to Google and Ancestry. That makes me feel very good. Plus, he is a cousin, so that is a bonus. He is a grandson of John Shay Barber and Flora Barsh, and is the biological brother of Linda Pollock White and Sally Brittingham. So we are all kin!

March 24, 2011 Linda White signed my guestbook. She is a granddaughter of John Shay Barber, so we are kin! Yea!

March 21, 2011 I have met Cynthia Eller Scott and Lisa Eller Jobe, both descendants of Samuel Garland Godsey and Susan Antoinette Barber, and they have helped me with additions to the family in chapter 2.

March 13, 2011 After receiving a tip about the Missouri Digital Archives and the death certificates there, I decided to do a search on Hugh Bassett, my great-great grandfather who died in Barry County in 1921. I could not find him, so I did a search on Bassett for the whole state, and came up with his son, George Washington Bassett, who died in Barry County in 1954. And it shows his father as Hugh Bassett and his mother as Gilly Ann Hood. There has been some dispute as to Gilly's maiden name, whether it was Hood or Roark. The informant on George's death certificate was his widow, Emma, so I am going to say that she would know the correct name of George's mother. So, the controversy ends at last!

Well, what do you know, Susan Peterson found the death certificate of Hugh Bassett for me. Same place, Missouri Digital Archives, I just missed it.

March 11, 2011 After spending about 40 hours offline last week because of power lines being down, Hawaii Electric apologized by sending me a gift certificate for $50 from American Express! I could spend it on anything except pay bills or get cash. So I went to Amazon and bought $50 worth of books!

March 5, 2011 After spending 24 hours with a crashed computer, then a day later losing electricity for 17 hours, things appear to be back to normal. I still left something unplugged on my computer. I am not sure what it is, but it doesn't seem to bother anything. The sound works and the printer works, so I guess I'll know when it crashes again. My next computer will be an ipad! On a genealogy note, I am adding a lot of info to chapter 8, thanks to Ike Porter.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dmorgan/chapter8.html

February 23, 2011 I have heard from Nyla Newman Umari, also a descendant of George Patton Barber! Chapter 10

February 21, 2011 Mark Barber, a descendant of George Patton Barber, signed my guestbook!

January 30, 2011 I have just heard from Linda Woods Briggs, a descendant of Benjamin Franklin Aldridge and Lucile Alice Woods (chapter 9), who signed my guestbook.

January 26, 2011 I just found out I am related to Janet Finley Davis and Becky Striggow, two sisters I have been communicating with for years! DNA testing reveals that their first cousin, Brian (Barber) Brooking is an exact match with four of my Barber cousins. Janet and Becky know they are descended from Littleton Barber, and they think Littleton is descended either from Asa Barber or Joseph Barber, but are not sure. Oh happy day!

January 21, 2011 I received the book "Bravo of the Brazos: John Larn of Fort Griffin, Texas" by Robert K. DeArment today. Fascinating reading!

January 20, 2011 In the past two weeks I have received several books in the mail, mostly from Amazon. "Interwoven: A Pioneer Chronicle" by Sallie Reynolds Matthews. I had read this in the 1970s, but wanted to get another copy, having lost my original years ago. I also received "Lambshead Before Interwoven" by Frances Mayhugh Holden, which talks about things that Sallie Reynolds Matthews didn't talk about. John Larn, for instance. Today I received "Lambshead Legacy: The Ranch Diary of Watt R Matthews" edited by Janet M Neubegauer. Watkins Reynolds Matthews was the youngest son of Sallie Reynolds Matthews. He was born in 1899, graduated from Princeton in 1921, and died at a ripe old age in the 1990s. I also received "A Texas Frontier: The Clear Fork Country and Fort Griffin, 1849-1887" by Ty Cashion, which debunks some of the myths surrounding Fort Griffin. I look forward to reading that one. I am still waiting for one more book about John M Larn, who married into the Matthews family, and who was gunned down while a prisoner in the Albany, Texas jail.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dmorgan/chapter7.html

January 19, 2011 I have just made contact with Marsha Griffeth Best of Florida, who is also a descendant of Susan Barber Griffith. I hope to have pictures soon!

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dmorgan/susanbarbergriffith.html

December 28, 2010 Besides meeting Betty Sims Alexander, I have met several other descendants of Susan Barber Griffith, thanks to Facebook. I have met JG Sims and his brother Emery Spear Sims III, and their beautiful wives, and also Robert L Jones sent me a ton of material. I have also added a lot of information on Thomas Barber, son of Plyer, thru Thomas's son Thomas Young Barber, thanks to descendant Ruby M Kelley. In chapter 2, I have added pictures of Richard Rylee, his daughter Amy Dennis, Camisha Ostrom, Peggy Lynn Phillips and her daughter Evette Butler, and lots of descendants of Josiah Woods Barber.

December 10, 2010 I am currently splitting up chapter 1, it is just getting too big. I have created plyer.html and sarah.html as separate files, but still chapter 1. Also, I have finally made contact with Betty Sims Alexander, who has a web page on Ancestry. She is a descendant of Susan Barber Griffith.

December 7, 2010 I made contact with Robert Jones, a descendant of Susan Barber Griffith and her husband Allen Griffith, daughter and son-in-law of James and Penelope Barber. And a few days ago I connected with Michelle Barber, daughter of Thomas Kenyon Barber Jr, from the Hardy Jay Barber family.

December 6, 2010 I made contact with Crey Barber and his uncle Kenneth Lee Barber, both descendants of Richard Barber of Onslow County, North Carolina. We are hoping a DNA test will show that we are related to this family. And I was happy to connect these two gentlemen to each other, who didn't know each other. Plus a descendant of William Barber and Rachel Daniell has agreed to take a DNA test, so maybe that will be more good news.

November 25, 2010 Here it is, another Thanksgiving Day, and I am all alone. The story of my life. But I have a lot to be thankful for. I helped a young woman find her mother, that she had not seen since she was eleven years old, in 1985. I have added new people to the line of Josiah Woods Barber, and also to the line of Greensby Wetherford Barber. I have purchased a book by a descendant of Greensby Wetherford Barber, dealing with his ordeal with identity theft. A few days ago I found another descendant of Gray Barber and Charlotte Stedman, and more pictures!

Yes, there is a lot to be thankful for. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

November 2, 2010 Another new line has been added to Josiah Woods Barber, son of Matthew. I have added Susan Antoinette Barber as the daughter of Josiah Woods Barber. I am not sure, since she was already married at the time of the 1850 census, so was not listed with her parents. But she was living very close to both Josiah and to Matthew, so it does make sense. This adds a whole lot of relatives, mostley named Godsey. See chapter 2.

October 31, 2010 Adding a new line to Matthew Barber, thanks to Linda Allen Townsend Westbrook.

October 30, 2010 I now have a picture of Barber Watkins Reynolds, thanks to Jenny Orton. Not a great picture, it is from a photocopy, but it is a picture nonetheless.

October 29, 2010 Loretta Hill just contacted me today. Her husband is a descendant of Sarah Johnson, the granddaughter mentioned in the will of Margaret Watkins Barber. YEA

October 28, 2010 Today, I heard from Jennifer Hoy Orton, a descendant of Benjamin Franklin Reynolds, who was the son of George Reynolds and Sarah Barber. And she sent me a bunch of pictures!

October 27, 2010 At long last, I have discovered Sarah Johnson, the granddaughter of Margaret Watkins Barber, named in Margaret's will! She was the daughter of George Reynolds and Sarah Barber. This is all thanks to Coley Johnson's web page on Ancestry.

October 20, 2010 We have a new Barber line that has been proven thanks to DNA testing. The descendants of James Silas Barber and his brother Robert Henry Barber are proven to be descendants of James and Penelope Barber.

"In comparing 37 markers, the probability that Charles Stephen Barber and Mr Willis Mitchell Barber SR shared a common ancestor withn thelast 8 generations is 89.03%."

"In comparing 37 markers, the probability that Mr Arthur Bud Barber II and Mr Willis Mitchell Barber Sr shared a common ancestor within the last 8 generations is 89.03%.

October 16, 2010 I have been adding information for Isaac Barber, son of Reuben Barber and grandson of Plyer Barber, thanks to Cherie Harris Ransom, and information for Burwell Barber, son of Plyer Barber, thanks to pattyworley75 on Ancestry.

October 10, 2010 I am going to go out on a limb and say that Gray Barber of Chatham County North Carolina was the father of James Barber of Chatham County NC and Clarke County, GA. My only reason is that James Barber named his first son Gray Barber. There are several other possibilities for the father of James, such as William, Richard, Aaron, and maybe Moses, but I have no evidence for them, either. I don't know how I will ever be able to prove this.

October 6, 2010 Finally, we have a breakthrough! At this url is the following:

http://www.ncgenweb.us/chatham/barber.htm

CHATHAM COUNTY COURT OF PLEASE AND QUARTER SESSIONS
TUESDAY, MAY SESSION, 1800

A Deed, JAMES BARBER and PENNY BARBER to JOSEPH PITTS duly proved by the
oath of JOHN DAVIS

These are my ancestors, James and Penelope Barber! This proves that they were in Chatham County NC in 1800, and probably got married there, before moving to Clarke County, GA.

October 1, 2010 I updated information on Burwell Barber in chapter one, thanks to this government document.
http://www.digital.ncdcr.gov/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/p15012coll1&CISOPTR=7795&REC=19

September 29, 2010 I finally made contact with Rose Adams, whose husband is a descendant of Gray Barber.

September 24, 2010 I have made contact with Dee Barber Flournoy, a descendant of Gray Barber and Charlotte Stedman.

September 9, 2010 On Sept 7 I heard from long time friend Gary DeYong, who I had not heard from in years. And on Sept 9 I heard from even longer time friend Jerry Groves. It is amazing to find out what snail mail can accomplish. Some folks actually respond to it! And I now have their e-mail addresses.

August 25, 2010 I have removed the descendants of William Barber, oldest son of William H Barber and his wife Nancy, as they belong to a different Barber family. Very sorry to say goodbye to Karl Barbour, Rev Mark Barbour, Don Barbour and Donnie Barbour of Atlanta. William was still single in 1880 when he was 21 years old. I have not been able to trace him after that.

August 14, 2010 I have added a picture of Matt Wallace with Bill Posey, and also a picture of Matt Wallace with his sons. This was Bill Posey's brother-in-law. I also made contact with some of my Honeycutt cousins in California, and some of my Fyke cousins in Texas.

August 9, 2010 I have added pictures of Matthew Andrew Posey, Albert Washington Posey, Robert A Posey and Henry A Posey to chapter 18. They were the sons of William Andrew Jackson (Bill) Posey. Thanks to Bill Lehmann!

July 30, 2010 I have been updating the Montgomery, Hand, and Cromartie families in Chapter 13. Something I didn't know in 1975, when the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 census were not available.

July 29, 2010 I think I have found two different branches of the family of James P(F) Barber, who basically did not know each other. James had two different families, and had no contact at all with the children from his first marriage. His second family is the family of Greg Peebles and his mother Jean. I think we can connect the son of Willis Albert Barber to Greg's family thru DNA testing. James P (F) Barber was the son of James Silas Barber and grandson of William H Barber of Lumpkin County, GA.

July 26, 2010 I have made contact with Greg Peebles, who is a descendant of William H Barber, a younger brother of my ancestor, Silas Harrison Barber. I hope to have a lot more information soon. See Chapter 11

July 22, 2010 I have updated Chapter 6 extensively, thanks to Linda Adams. Thirty years ago, I followed the wrong James Scott with census, records, which made for a big error in my book. That has now been corrected.

July 1, 2010 I just received the records of the Plyer Barber estate, thanks to Gina Thompson! Thanks! See Chapter 1.

June 28, 2010 I received the DAR papers of Gina Fuller Thompson today! Look at Chapter one.

May 30, 2010 I am currently trying to do some research on the family of William Barber and Rachel Daniell. And if we can get anyone to do a DNA test, to see if they are related to any of the Barber families I am working on.

May 19, 2010 A close friend of my niece, April, has contacted me. I am hoping I can learn a lot more from Kimberly.

May 7, 2010 I have found more descendants of Silas Harrison Barber, thanks to Shirley Wurst. So I have added to Chapter 14. Plus here is my class picture from the Madill OK high school class of 1961. I was much better looking back then!

April 29, 2010 Thanks to FACEBOOK and Barbara Dunn, I have found some more relatives. Betty Jean Haynes Dunn, Shirley Ann Haynes Ezell and Nancy Haynes McCurley are sisters and the daughters of Ida Ruth Barber Haynes, granddaughters of Golden (Goley) Walker Barber and great granddaughters of Robert Henry (or Henry Robert) Barber. Robert H Barber was the youngest son of William H Barber and his wife Nancy. William was a brother of my great-great grandfather, Silas Harrison Barber.

April 27, 2010 Thanks to Nancy Mitchell Morris in Griffin, Georgia, I have a descendancy chart of William Barber, son of George Barber and Margaret Watkins. What a boatload of new information! You can find her data at williambarber.rtf.

April 20, 2010 Another descendant of William H Barber has made contact with me! It is just like Christmas around here!. Anyway, it was nice hearing from Jim Barber, hope to hear a lot more.

April 16, 2010 I have found another cousin! Don F. Barbour Jr is a great great grandson of William H Barber, William being a younger brother of Silas Harrison Barber!

April 10, 2010 I have updated the info on Chapter 4, about the Stiles family, thanks to Bev Barney's web site.

April 9, 2010 I received some information from the DAR, and was able to update Chapter 4 on the family of Elizabeth Barber Stiles somewhat.

April 5, 2010 I have just received some documentation papers from the DAR, and I am hoping to figure out who sent them in. Whoever it was, they were successful, and they are DAR #874122. She is a descendant of William Barber, son of George Barber and Margaret Watkins.

April 1, 2010 I filled out the 2010 census on March 15, 2010 and mailed it back. So, today, I get ANOTHER form they tell me to fill out, it is federal law. And it is identical to the one I have already filled out. The federal government, you gotta luv em!

March 23, 2010 A most historic day! Health care is passed into law and signed by the president!

March 17, 2010 Happy St. Patrick's Day! I have updated the Enoch Hanson family, thanks to Ginger Perry.

March 8, 2010 Here is more up-to-date information on James Brewer and his wives.

March 3, 2010 I have added Gina Fuller Thompson's information to the family of Plyer Barber.

March 2, 2010 Thanks to Dixie Garner, I have discovered that one of my cousins, Dennis Letts, was a professsor at Southeastern Oklahoma State University at Durant for years, and after retiring became an actor. And his wife, Billie, is an award-winning novelist. And their son Tracy won the pulitzer prize and a Tony for his play, "August: Osage County".

February 13, 2010 I have updated some info on Samuel Spears and Georgia McLean, chapter 8, thanks to Tana Morgan (no relation)

January 25, 2010 All of my mail in my inbox has disappeared! Whoops! Gone! Vanished! Vamoose! Wow, I've had this computer 4 1/2 years and this has never happened before! Oh well, I have much of the mail in my sent mail box, and I do have the addresses stored in the computer. I just need to go lookup my cable/Time-Warner bill when the time comes.

December 15, 2009 My nephew, Kris Morgan, has sent me new pictures of his daughters. They are adorable!

December 10, 2009 A very cute picture of small Barber boys, Layne, Danny, Tony and Curtis, older brothers of Stephen P. Barber, descendants of Gray Barber.

December 4, 2009 I just added a picture of Amy Barber, niece of Arthur Barber II.

November 21, 2009 The newest Barber descendant was born today, November 21. He is Ethan Stone Pettit, the son of Brian and Stefani Barber Pettit and the grandson of Stephen Barber.

November 13, 2009 I have just heard from Rita Thomason, who is a descendant of Gray Barber! I have added her info.

November 11, 2009 I have run across an Ancestry page that says Penelope McClendon married Judge Stinson. But when I contacted the web page author, she says she has no proof that Penelope married anybody, she just saw it on another page and used it. That is the problem of using any information on an Ancestry page, nobody documents anything.

November 7, 2009 I now have a couple of pictures of Silas H. Barber, my great-great grandfather, at the time he was living in the Creek Nation with his oldest Son, Robert T. Barber, and Robert's family.

November 6, 2009 Here is the will of Jacob McClendon Sr.

For a larger picture, go here.

November 3, 2009 I was sent a file that states that Penelope McClendon was born 1767 in North Carolina. So this puts Penelope's age at a few years older than we had it. If she was married in early 1795, then she was 28 when she married James Barber. She would have been considered a spinster in those days. This file comes courtesy of Russell McClendon.

November 2, 2009 I believe we have found the maiden name of Penelope Barber, wife of James, thanks to Pamela Brewer Feezell.

The Early Records of Georgia, Volume I, Wilkes County
Page 41--McCLENDON, JACOB, Sr. To son Isaac slave Ben. To son Samuel
500 acres on Reedy branch including the land where Samuel now lives
and a slave Neroe. To son Travis a slave Primas. To son Dennis 650
acres part of which belonged to John Westbrooks, dec'd. and slaves
Adam and Dinah. To son Amos 600 acres, residue of my land, slaves,
cattle, etc., after his mother's death. Legacies to daus. Jemima,
Laney, Penelope, Nancy and Bethaney. Isaac and Martha McClendon, my
beloved wife, Excrs. Signed Aug. 16, 1791. Probated Apr.

I believe one name was left out of the above. Jacob McClendon Jr should have also been listed. And this will was probated in April 1793. Jacob Sr's wife was Mary Travis. Jacob Sr was born 1726 in either Chowan or Bertic County, NC.

Our Penelope was most likely not married when this was written in 1791, so she could fit in here as the daughter of Jacob McClendon, Sr. Oldest son Isaac McClendon was born in 1750, married Elizabeth Stribling. He served in the American Revolution from Wilkes County, GA.

I don't believe Jacob's daughter has been traced at all, so none of the researchers in that family know if Penelope lived past 1793, or if she got married. So, basically, she has been lost. Those researchers do know that Penelope's sister, Nancy McClendon, born in 1764, married William Heard. I wonder if one of my relatives, William H. Barber (son of Allen Barber) was named William Heard Barber. I thought I read that somewhere, but I have forgotten where.

The family of Jacob McClendon Sr has been pretty well traced, at least the males, through DNA testing. I contacted the administrator of the McClendon Family DNA project, Mary Becker, who is also a descendant of Jacob McClendon, Sr.

Although I did not ask her directly, she did not appear to have any knowledge of Penelope at all. So I think that is good news. I have found a ton of information on this family in the McClendon family forum on genforum, and the only mention of Penelope is that she was named in the will of Jacob Sr.

Anyway, if this is our ancestry, then we can say that Jacob's parents were Thomas McClendon and Elizabeth Bush and grandparents were Dennis Macklendon, born about 1650, Scotland, died about 1702, Perquimins County, North Carolina, and his wife Elizabeth (Dunn?)

October 31, 2009 I have just heard from a descendant of Cynthia Barber Brewer, the daughter of James and Penelope Barber!

Pamela Brewer Feezell has sent me some great pictures of her family.

October 30, 2009 I have just discovered that Shawn Fyke, my first cousin's son, married a 20 year old girl in July 2009. She is six years older than Shawn's oldest son!

October 27, 2009 I just heard from Ron and Linda McDuff, friends that I had not heard from since 1973. Amazing! I met them in Oklahoma City, but they live in Colorado now.

October 26, 2009 Jeanette Lucas Pursley has just been accepted into the DAR, NSDAR# 875305! Congratulatons, Jeanette! You can see her ancestry in chapter 9 of my book, some of it, anyway.

September 24, 2009 Thanks to Mary Cartmill of Oklahoma City for finding the high school ring I lost over 40 years ago! I thought it was long gone.

July 10, 2009 Dixie Hendrick Garner has sent me some great pictures of John Luther Garner, Worrell B. Garner and Craig Garner and their families! Here is a picture of John.

July 2, 2009 I have finally made contact with Dixie Hendrick Garner! Her husband is a descendant of BOTH George Barber-Margaret Watkins and James and Penelope Barber.

Morgan, Earl F., 76, maintenance supervisor, died Sunday. Services pending (People's Coopertive, Lone Wolf).

June 27, 2009 I am now convinced that James C Markham, born 1807, Nimrod Markham, born 1818, John Bunyon Markham, born 1819, and Carroll Markham, born 1822, were brothers. Nimrod and Carroll were living in the same counties at the same times for most of their lives.

June 6, 2009 I have made contact with Jeanette Pursley, a descendant of Louisa Marion Barber Lucas. Her grandfather, Milton Dee Lucas and wife Ida had EIGHTEEN children!

June 2, 2009 I am making progress on my Markham family. Frank James Markham Jr, Kim Markham Van Dyk, Harry Ezell Jr and me have gotten together on a private web site to include all the descendants of Nimrod and John Bunyon Markham. Hopefully we will be able to find more cousins.

May 26, 2009 I believe I am about to make contact with a descendant of John Luther Garner, who was the son of Susan L "Dink" Barber. Susan was the daughter of John C. Barber and Josephine Cordelia Lucas. So Susan has two different Barber families, that of James and Penelope Barber, and also of George Barber & Margaret Watkins.

May 24, 2009 I am wrong again. Alabama records show that Clara Thomas and Robert P Jones got married on 1 June 1900. So at the time that Robert T Jones says that his son is living at home with him on the June 2, 1900 census, the son is actually in Alabama getting married. LOL

May 23, 2009

After a few days research, I am now convinced that Mary Hanson Thomas
really was the grandmother of golfer Bobby Jones.

I was skeptical at first, especially when a web page on Ancestry showed
that Mary Hanson married Oliver Hillhouse Green in 1873. I thought that maybe
the legend wasn't accurate. And then I discovered Mary on the 1880 census of
Clarke County, Georgia as the wife of W B Thomas, and her daughter Ethel
Green was living with them! So it seemed a lot more possible.

I did some more research on Robert Tyre Jones, Jr, which showed that his
father was Robert P Jones and his mother was Clara Merrick Thomas. But
NOBODY on Ancestry had the parents of Clara. They all said that Clara was
born 1880-1883, which was shortly after the 1880 census.

I could not find W B Thomas on the 1900 or 1910 census, and I could not
 find Clara, either.

And then Mary Stewart Lindsey sent me this newspaper clipping of Miss
Clara Thomas, the daughter of Judge William Thomas of Athens, Georgia, marrying
Robert Jones of Trenton, Georgia. And they got married at Auburn, Alabama,
where Clara was visiting. Mary has a web page on Ancestry called Walker
 family of Longstreet

The newspaper clipping was dated June 2, but I do not know what year. It
could be either 1900 or 1901, since Bobby Jones was born March 1902. And
Clara's husband, Robert P. Jones, is listed on the 1900 census of Cherokee
County, Georgia as single and living with his father. And guess what! The
1900 census in Cherokee County was counted on June 2!

Anyway, I think they got married in 1901.

Plus, I now have a picture of Enoch Hanson's house on my web page, along
with Cindarilla's tombstone and Enoch's also.

 So, it is good news!

May 21, 2009 I have made contact with Glenda Gerici, whose daughter is married to Emery Spear Sims III, a descendant of Allen W Griffith and Susan Barber.

May 15, 2009 I have made contact with Bruce Johnson, who has a great web page on Ancestry for the family of John Crawford Edwards, who married into the Francis Marion Hanson family.

May 11, 2009 I have received a photocopy of the book "ON RAILROAD STREET: THE STORY OF CARRIE HANSON BREEDLOVE AND HER FAMILY by Ron Williams. Plus, I have made contact with Kim Van Dyk, a descendant of Nimrod Markham. Plus I have heard from Ginger Perry and Janet Bradley Pickney, descendants of Enoch Hanson.

April 30, 2009 I have received a huge file on the descendants of Enoch Hanson and Cindarilla Barber, thanks to Jennifer Wilson. Whew!

April 21, 2009 I have just made contact with Ron Williams, a descendant of Enoch Hanson and his wife Cindarilla Barber. Yay!

April 20, 2009 I have added lots of descendants to the family of James and Penelope Barber. I found children of Cindarilla Barber and Enoch Hanson, Cynthia Barber and John Brewer, Jane Barber and Charles W. Wilson, Susan Barber and Allen Griffith, and for Griffin Barber.

April 16, 2009 After all of these years, I have found William Center and his wife Nancy Barber on a census. They were living in Atlanta, Georgia all those years, when I didn't even know their ages! And there is a connection to the Dinning family of Simpson County, Kentucky.

April 13, 2009 I have added a lot of information to chapters 5, 10, 12 and partII.

April 11, 2009 I found a passport photo of Wiley Crawford Barber Jr. Wow!

April 10, 2009 I have added a lot more census records to Chapter 5. I have also found two more sons of Reese Barber Jr and his wife Matilda Lester. They are Henry B. Barber and Cicero Barber.

April 9, 2009 Gail O'Donnell has signed my guestbook. She is a descendant of Spencer Barber (chapter 5).

March 30, 2009 I have made contact with Joanne Johnson and Rosemary Leyland, the daughters of Frank B. Russell. Frank was a great help to me when I wrote the book on the Barber family. Here are some pictures of him and his wife Roberta, and also of Frank and Leith V. Watkins, the son of Dr. Reese Kelso Watkins.

March 17, 2009 I have extensively updated the Plyer Barber section of Chapter One.

March 16, 2009 The 37 marker results for Ryan Barbour are back, and hehas two mismatches with Newitt Henry Barbour, Jerry Lynne Barber, and James Philip Barber.

"In comparing 37 markers, the probability that James P. Barber and Ryan Barbour share a common ancestor with the last 8 generations is 72.02%."

"In comparing 37 markers, the probability that Newitt H. Barbour and Ryan Barbour shared a common ancestor within the last 8 generations is 69.09%."

"In comparing 37 markers, the probability that Jerry L. Barber and Ryan Barbour shared a common ancestor within the last 8 generations is 69.09%."

Ryan Barbour's numbers:

13-25-14-(10)-11-15-12-12-13-13-13-29
17-9-10-11-11-(26)-15-19-29-13-14-17-17
10-11-19-23-15-16-19-18-37-(38)-9-12

The 10 in Ryan Barbour's numbers is a 9 in James Philip Barber's numbers.
The 26 is a 25 in the other three.
The 38 is a 39 in Newitt's and Jerry Lynne's.

March 12, 2009 The 37 markers results for Newitt Henry Barbour are back, and he is an exact match with Jerry Lynne Barber. Newitt is a descendant of Plyer Barber and his wife Amy, and Jerry is a descendant of George Barber and his wife Margaret Watkins. They are sons of George Barber who died before 1750 in Augusta County, Virginia.

"In comparing 37 markers, the probability that Jerry L. Barber and Newitt H. Barbour shared a common ancestor within the last 8 generations is 97.28%."

Here are the markers for Newitt and Jerry.

13-25-14-10-11-15-12-12-13-13-13-29
17-9-10-11-11-25-15-19-29-13-14-17-17
10-11-19-23-15-16-19-18-37-39-9-12

March 3, 2009 The 25 markers results of both Newitt Henry Barbour and Ryan Barbour are back.

There is an exact match for 25 markers between Newitt Henry Barbour and Jerry Lynne Barber. We can only hope that will hold true for 37 markers also. We will know in a few weeks. Here are the markers for Newitt Henry Barbour.

13-25-14-10-11-15-12-12-13-13-13-29
17-9-10-11-11-25-15-19-29-13-14-17-17

"In comparing 25 markers, the probability that Jerry L. Barber and Newitt H. Barbour shared a common ancestor within the last 8 generations is 84.92%."

However, there is one marker difference between Newitt Henry Barber and Ryan Barber. They are both descendants of Plyer Barber, remember. Here are Ryan's markers.

13-25-14-10-11-15-12-12-13-13-13-29
17-9-10-11-11-26-15-19-29-13-14-17-17

The difference is DYS# 447. Newitt's number is 25 and Ryan's number is 26.

"In comparing 25, markers, the probability that Ryan Barbour and Newitt H. Barber shared a common ancestor within the last 8 generations is 58.22%."

There is also one marker difference between Newitt Henry Barbour and James Philip Barber. Here is James's markers.

13-25-14-9-11-15-12-12-13-13-13-29
17-9-10-11-11-25-15-19-29-13-14-17-17

James has 9 at DYS# 391 and Newitt and others have 10 at that DYS.

"In comparing 25 markers, the probability that James P. Barber and Newitt H. Barbour shared a common ancestor within the last 8 generations is 58.16%."

However, there are *2* markers difference between Ryan Barbour and James Philip Barber. James has a 9 at DYS# 391 and a 25 at DYS# 447. Ryan has a 10 at DYS# 391 and a 26 at DYS# 447.

"In comparing 25 markers, the probability that James P. Barber and Ryan Barbour shared a common ancestor within the last 8 generations is 29.94%."

They are still related, but I am confused as to how to explain the mutations. This is out of my league. Hopefully, there will be no further mutations when Ryan gets to 37 markers.

It is my hope that Jerry Lynne Barber and Newitt Henry Barbour will eventually go to 67 markers. Hopefully, they will be exact for 67 markers also. Plus, going to 67 markers for everyone will help to determine a closer relationship for all. I have gone to 67 markers for 4 of *my* Barber cousins, and they are two markers off at the maximum.

Please see the chart below.

Interpreting Genetic Distance Within Surname Projects 25 Markers

DISTANCE: 0 - RELATED

Your perfect 25/25 match means you share a common male
ancestor with a person who shares your surname (or
variant). These two facts demonstrate your relatedness

DISTANCE: 1 - RELATED

You share the same surname (or a variant) with another male
and you mismatch by only one 'point' on only one marker.
For most closely related and same surnamed individuals, the
mismatch markers are usually either DYS 439 or DYS 385 A,
385 B,389-1 and 389-2 from our first panel of 12 markers,
and on the following from the second panel: DYS #'s 458 459
    a 459b 449, 464 a-d, which have shown themselves to move
most rapidly. The probability of a close relationship is
    very high.

DISTANCE: 2 - PROBABLY RELATED

You share the same surname (or a variant) with another male
and you mismatch by two 'points' among the 25 markers we
tested. For most closely related and same surnamed
individuals, the mismatch markers are usually either DYS
    439 or DYS 385 A, 385 B,389-1 and 389-2 from our first
panel of 12 markers, and on the following from the second
    panel: DYS #'s 458 459 a 459b 449, 464 a-d, which have
shown themselves to move most rapidly. The probability of a
close relationship is good, however your results show
mutations, and therefore more time between you and the
    other same surnamed person.

March 1, 2009 Today is my birthday. I made it 66 years.

The 67 markers for Jimmie D. Barber are back, and he is an exact match for
67 markers with Arthur Bud Barber II. According to the Family Tree DNA
page,

"In comparing 67 markers, the probability that Mr. Arthur B. Barber, Jr. and
Jimmie D. Barber shared a common ancestor within the last 8 generations is
98.96%" For 12 generations, the probability is 99.89%.

Jimmie is a descendant of James and Penelope Barber through their son Gray
Barber who married Charlotte Stedman, and Arthur Bud Barber II is a
descendant of James and Penelope Barber through their son Allen Barber who
married Frances H. Crawford. Arthur is the closest relative to me, we are
both descendants of Silas Harrison Barber.

Jimmie and Arthur are also one marker off from Donald Orville Barber and
Charles Stephen Barber. Donald is a descendant of James and Penelope Barber
through their son Allen Barber, grandson James M. Barber, great-grandson
Joshua Heard Barber. Charles is from a completely line, that of Moses Barber
who died about 1800 in Chatham County, North Carolina.

February 18, 2009 I believe that Berryman Absher was the father of my ancestor, Mary Jane Absher. Mary Jane married John Travelstead in 1849 in Sumner County, Tennessee. She was living next door to B. Abshire, who has to be Berryman Absher, born about 1810 in Kentucky. Berryman Absher was the son of John Absher and his wife Nancy Barnhart. Berryman was the brother of Mary Absher. Mary had about 8 children, including Litle Absher, but no husband. Litle was the grandfather of Dr. Lee Alton Absher, who wrote the book, "Some Early Settlers of Upper Sumner County, Tennessee. Litle's wife was Mahala Durham, the daughter of James Durham and Lydia Gillespie, and the younger sister of my ancestor, Polly Ann Durham that married James David Graves. Polly Ann's oldest son, James Carroll Graves, married Rebecca E. Travelstead, who was the oldest child of John Travelstead and Mary Jane Absher.

February 11, 2009 I am going to have to back off the info I thought I had discovered yesterday. Frederick Travelstead was the father of a different John Travelstead, not mine.

February 10, 2009 I have added new information on Absher and Travelstead to Thomas and Naomi Gillespie. I just found out that my John Travelstead was a son of Frederick Travelstead and his wife Mary Burton. Frederick was German and Mary was Irish. THAT expains it!

February 3, 2009 In 1950, I lived next door to Buddy Holley in Lubbock, Texas. After we left Lubbock at Christmas time, I never saw Buddy again. Fifty years ago today, he died in a plane crash in Clear Lake, Iowa.

January 23, 2009 I have added lots of census images, mostly to chapter 16. I have also added a page to chapter 16 for my Markham and Bassett families.

January 22, 2009 I added a photo of Mary Ella Coker Barber Ridley, the widow of Hardy J. Barber, and a photo of Ella with her second husband Tom Ridley to chapter 14. Photos are courtesy of Mary Ann Hesselgesser.

January 21, 2009 I just added a picture of Silas H. Barber's tombstone to Chapter 14, thanks to Renee Kernan.

January 18, 2009 My aunt died January 10, 2009. Here is her obit from the Daily Oklahoman.

Jeanice Sue (Hosler) Morgan, 79, of Midwest City, has gone to be with her Lord and Savior. She ascended on January 10, 2009. Jeanice, one of 9 children, was born March 24, 1929 in Cordell, Oklahoma. Jeanice met and married her husband and life-long love, Eddie L. Morgan, on June 11, 1949 in Oklahoma City. Jeanice worked in the Private Sector as well as the State government, primarily as a bookkeeper when needed by her family. But her primary passion was for her Lord, husband and family. Her caring nature and true concern in making a difference for those she touched and loved are how she earned her wings. She will be truly missed. Jeanice's survivors include her husband of 60 years, Eddie Morgan, her sons Mark and Nelson Morgan, her daughter Rebecca Breen and her husband Shawn Breen, as well as granddaughters Miranda Morgan Morgan, Sarah and Amanda Breen and grandson Jordan Morgan. Services for Jeanice will be held 10:00 AM, Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009 at the Eastside Church of Christ with burial in Arlington Memory Gardens Cemetery.

January 17, 2009 This is Michelle Obama's 45th birthday. Happy Birthday!

January 5, 2009 I have discovered Silas H. Barber on the 1910 census of Oklahoma, which shows that he was living in Bixby, Tulsa County, Oklahoma with his son Robert. He died a few months later. So I was wrong in saying that he died in Kiefer, Creek County.

December 31, 2008 Got a very nice Christmas greeting from my nephew Kris Morgan and his family. And since I got my new scanner/printer/copier today, I got it uploaded to the web page. So here it is.

December 29, 2008 Happy Holidays! The Obama family and all of us that live on the island of Oahu survived the great blackout of 2008!

December 3, 2008 The 67 markers for Arthur Bud Barber II are back, and he is a match for 66 out of 67 markers for both Charles Stephen Barber and Donald Orville Barber. Here is what the comparison chart says.

"In comparing 67 markers, the probability that Mr. Arthur B. Barber Jr. and Charles S. Barber shared a common ancestor within the last 8 generations is 95.27%."

And this one:

"In comparing 67 markers, the probability that Mr. Arthur B. Barber Jr. and Donald O. Barber shared a common ancestor within the last 8 generations is 94.43%."

I guess the difference comes from the fact that they differ on different markers. Don O. Barber differs with Arthur and Charles on marker 35, and Charles S. Barber differs with Arthur and Don on marker 43.

INTERPRETING GENETIC DISTANCE WITHIN SURNAME PROJECTS

67 MARKERS

Distance Relatedness Explanation
0 Very Tightly Related

67/67 Your perfect match means you share a common male ancestor
with a person who shares your surname (or variant). Your
relatedness is extremely close with the common ancestor
predicted, 50% of the time, in 3 generations or less and with a
90% probability within 5 generations. Very few people achieve
this close level of a match. All confidence levels are well
within the time frame that surnames were adopted in Western
Europe.

1-2 Tightly Related

65-66/67 You share the same surname (or a variant) with another
male and you mismatch by only one or two 'points' at only one
marker. It's most likely that you matched 36/37 or 37/37 on a
previous Y-DNA test. Very few people achieve this close level
of a match. All confidence levels are well within the time
frame that surnames were adopted in Western Europe.

3-4 Related

63-64/67 You share the same surname (or a variant) with another
male and you mismatch by only three or four 'points?~@~Y. It's
most likely that you matched 24/25, 36/37 or 37/37 on previous
Y-DNA tests and your mismatch will be found within the second
panel at DYS #'s 458, 459 a, 459b, 449, or within 464 a-d, or
at DYS 576, 570, CDYa or CDYb in our third panel of markers.
Your common ancestor is probably not extremely recent, but your
mismatch is likely within the range of most well established
surname lineages in Western Europe.

5-6 Related

61-62/67 You share the same surname (or a variant) with another
male and you mismatch by five or six 'points'. Because of the
volatility within some of the markers this is slightly tighter
than being 11/12, 23/25, or 33/37, and it's most likely that
you matched closely on previous Y-DNA tests. It's most likely
that you matched 24/25, 36/37 or 37/37 on previous Y-DNA tests
and your mismatch will be found within the second panel at DYS
#'s 458, 459 a, 459b, 449, or within 464 a-d, or at DYS 576,
570, CDYa or CDYb in our third panel of markers. Your common
ancestor is not very recent, but your mismatch is likely within
the range of most well established surname lineages in Western
Europe.

7 Probably Related

60/67 You share the same surname (or a variant) with another
male and you mismatch by seven 'points'. Because of the
volatility within some of the markers this is about the same as
being 11/12 and it's most likely that you matched 23/25 or
24/25 or 33-34/37 on previous Y-DNA tests. If several or many
generations have passed it is likely that these two lines are
related through other family members. The only way to confirm
is to test additional family lines and find where the mutations
took place. Only by testing additional family members can you
find the person in between each of you...this 'in betweener'
becomes essential for you to find, and without him the
possibility of a match exists, but further evidence must be
pursued. If you test additional individuals you will most
likely find that their DNA falls in-between the persons who are
7 apart demonstrating relatedness within this family cluster or
haplotype.

November 20, 2008 I have added a picture of me with some of my neighbors.

I am in the back row, on the right

November 19, 2008 I added a couple of pictures to chapter 14. One is a picture of the Marquis Lafayette Coker - Martha Susan "Sudie" Barber family, and the other is of the Coker Family Reunion in Jones County, Texas in 1914. Besides Marquis, also pictured is Mary Ella Coker Barber, widow of Hardy J. Barber. The pictures are from Renee Kernan.

INTERPRETING GENETIC DISTANCE WITHIN SURNAME PROJECTS

67 MARKERS

Distance Relatedness Explanation
0 Very Tightly Related

67/67 Your perfect match means you share a common male ancestor with
a person who shares your surname (or variant). Your relatedness is
extremely close with the common ancestor predicted, 50% of the time,
in 3 generations or less and with a 90% probability within 5
generations. Very few people achieve this close level of a match. All
confidence levels are well within the time frame that surnames were
adopted in Western Europe.

1-2 Tightly Related

65-66/67 You share the same surname (or a variant) with another male
and you mismatch by only one or two 'points' at only one marker. It's
most likely that you matched 36/37 or 37/37 on a previous Y-DNA test.
Very few people achieve this close level of a match. All confidence
levels are well within the time frame that surnames were adopted in
Western Europe.

3-4 Related

63-64/67 You share the same surname (or a variant) with another male
and you mismatch by only three or four 'points?~@~Y. It's most likely
that you matched 24/25, 36/37 or 37/37 on previous Y-DNA tests and
your mismatch will be found within the second panel at DYS #'s 458,
459 a, 459b, 449, or within 464 a-d, or at DYS 576, 570, CDYa or CDYb
in our third panel of markers. Your common ancestor is probably not
extremely recent, but your mismatch is likely within the range of
most well established surname lineages in Western Europe.

5-6 Related

61-62/67 You share the same surname (or a variant) with another male
and you mismatch by five or six 'points'. Because of the volatility
within some of the markers this is slightly tighter than being 11/12,
23/25, or 33/37, and it's most likely that you matched closely on
previous Y-DNA tests. It's most likely that you matched 24/25, 36/37
or 37/37 on previous Y-DNA tests and your mismatch will be found
within the second panel at DYS #'s 458, 459 a, 459b, 449, or within
464 a-d, or at DYS 576, 570, CDYa or CDYb in our third panel of
markers. Your common ancestor is not very recent, but your mismatch
is likely within the range of most well established surname lineages
in Western Europe.

7 Probably Related

60/67 You share the same surname (or a variant) with another male and
you mismatch by seven 'points'. Because of the volatility within some
of the markers this is about the same as being 11/12 and it's most
likely that you matched 23/25 or 24/25 or 33-34/37 on previous Y-DNA
tests. If several or many generations have passed it is likely that
these two lines are related through other family members. The only
way to confirm is to test additional family lines and find where the
mutations took place. Only by testing additional family members can
you find the person in between each of you...this 'in betweener'
becomes essential for you to find, and without him the possibility of
a match exists, but further evidence must be pursued. If you test
additional individuals you will most likely find that their DNA falls
in-between the persons who are 7 apart demonstrating relatedness
within this family cluster or haplotype.

8-9 Only Possibly Related

58-59/67 You share the same surname (or a variant) with another male
and you mismatch by eight or nine ?~@~Xpoints?~@~Y. It is most likely
that you did not match 24-25/25 or 35-37/37 in previous Y-DNA tests.
If several or many generations have passed it is possible that you
are related through other family members. The only way to confirm or
deny is to test additional family lines and find where the mutation
took place. Only by testing additional family members can you find
the person in between each of you...this 'in betweener' becomes
essential for you to find, and without him only the possibility of a
match exists, but further evidence should be pursued. If you test
additional individuals you must find the person whose DNA results
falls in-between the persons that are 8 or 9 apart demonstrating
relatedness within this family cluster or haplotype.

10-11 Not Related

56-57/67 is too far off to be considered related, unless you can find
an ?~@~\in-betweener?~@~Y as for determining ?~@~XOnly Possibly
Related,?~@~Y above. It is important to determine what set of results
most typifies the largest number members of the group you are 'close'
to matching. You may be 57/67 with an individual, but 61/67 with the
center of the group, and your potential relatedness to him is through
the center of the group.

Beyond 11 Not Related

55/67 You are not related and the odds greatly favor that you have
not shared a common male ancestor with this person within thousands
of years.

July 31, 2008 After 3 days of fighting vicious posts in my guestbook attempting to spread viruses, I think I have finally figured out how to block them from posting. Jerks like this deserve a slow, painful death.

July 21, 2008 The 25 marker results for Frank James Markham are in, and he is an exact match with me. You can see this at:

July 6, 2008 I have updated Chapter 16, thanks to my sister, Donna Gingrich, and my aunt, Leta Fyke.

June 29, 2008 I finally figured out how to use my scanner! So I scanned a picture of my sister, Donna Gingrich, and me at the Dole Plantation the past Tuesday.

David & Donna in Hawaii, June 24, 2008

June 28, 2008 After being homeless for 3 years in California and for 12 years in Hawaii, before finally getting a nice place to live, I am not used to people being overly generous. So I am truly touched to receive a letter from a distant cousin today, with a check for $100 enclosed. I have never met him, he lives in Georgia, but he heard my sister was out here on vacation, and he wanted to treat us to dinner. I am overwhelmed with this gesture.

June 27, 2008 The results for Khris Markham, a descendant of Rev. Anderson Markham, are in, and he is an exact match for 25 markers with SIX other people named Markham or Marcum. Some people are SO lucky!

Results are here:
http://worldfamilies.net/surnames/m/marcum/results.html

June 19, 2008 I have added a few links to the 1900 census of the Creek Nation. You can find the entire census here:

Creek Nation

June 16, 2008 I got my $300 tax rebate check today. Yea! This will really help when my sister comes to Hawaii for a vacation next week. I have not seen her in 22 years!

June 15, 2008 Frank James Markham just let me know that he is going to 37 markers. Yippee!

June 9, 2008 I have just heard from Diane Markham, who signed my guestbook. Hopefully, she will fill me in on her family.

June 5, 2008 I have just been notified by John (Jack) Wiley Barber that he is upgrading to 37 markers, and Don O. Barber has just told me that he is upgrading to 67 markers. WOW!

June 4, 2008 We have the results back, and Charles Stephen Barber is an exact match for 37 markers with Arthur Bud Barber II and Jimmie D. Barber, and is one marker off with Don O. Barber for 37 markers. This means that the probability that Jimmie D. Barber, Arthur Bud Barber II, and Charles Stephen Barber shared a common ancestor within the last 8 generations is 97.28%. Charles is a descendant of Moses Barber and Jimmie and Arthur are descendants of James Barber. It is highly likely that Moses and James are brothers, and we need to find their father.

Plus, the 12 marker results for my nephew, Kristoffer Scott Morgan are back, and he is an exact match with me. That makes sense. LOL

June 3, 2008 I am busily updating the Gray Barber family that Jim Wilson has sent me. You can see it at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dmorgan/part2.html

Plus, Jim has sent me some photos of Barber graves at Harkey's Chapel Methodist Church cemetery in St. Clair County, Alabama, plus a picture of the sign at Harkey's Chapel.

June 2, 2008 I have heard from Jim Wilson, a great-grandson of Charlotte Barber. Her father was James S. Barber, and grandfather was Gray Barber. Hopefully, I will have the info on Charlotte and her husband John Wesley Fugitt soon.

Here is a photo of Charlotte and her husband, plus more pictures:

Plus, I have updated chapter 15 on the Wood family. It turns out that we are not descended from Charles Wood and his wife Sara Brightwell after all.

May 28, 2008 I have added on to Chapter 1, a section on Plyer Barber, brother of Captain George Barber, and a section on Sarah Barber who married Reese Watkins. Sarah was a sister of Captain George Barber.

May 27, 2008 We have the 37 marker results back for Jimmie D. Barber and Don O. Barber. Jimmie D. Barber, a descendant of Gray Barber, is an exact match with Arthur Bud Barber II, a descendant of Allen Barber. Don Barber is one marker off for 37 markers. That is not a big deal to have one or two mutations between father and son for 37 markers. We are still waiting for the 37 markers results of Charles Stephen Barber.

Kathleen Barber signed my guestbook! She is a descendant of Reese Barber, son of George and Margaret Watkins Barber. Hopefully, one of her brothers will agree to do the DNA test.

May 23, 2008 The results of Don O. Barber's DNA test for 25 markers is back, and he is an exact match with Arthur Bud Barber II, Jimmie D. Barber, and Charles Stephen Barber. So we are still waiting for the 37 marker results of Charles Stephen Barber.

May 21, 2008 The results of Jimmie Barber's DNA test for 25 markers is back, and he is an exact match with Arthur Bud Barber II, a descendant of Silas Harrison Barber, and Charles Stephen Barber, a descendant of Moses Barber. The results of his test for 37 markers should be back next week.

May 17, 2008 I have added a guestbook. I hope you will take advantage of it. I would like to hear about your family and ancestors. To view the posts others have made, just scroll down past the sign guestbook part.

May 15, 2008 At last! We have an exact match for 12 markers between a descendant of George Barber-Margaret Watkins and a descendant of Plyer Barber. Jerry Lynne Barber is a descendant of Dr. George Perry Barber; George Barber-Elizabeth Reynolds; George Barber-Margaret Watkins; and George Barber-Elizabeth. So, even though Dr. George Perry Barber said this in his genealogy, and I included it in my book, this is the first actual proof. So far, it is just for 12 markers, but Jerry Lynne already has his results for 37 markers, and I believe Ryan Barbour, a descendant of Plyer Barber and his parents George Barber-Elizabeth, has applied for his 37 marker test. Yippee!

May 8, 2008 I have now recieved information about the children of James Barber, and his will, and am substantially revising my book. I have added a chapter on James Barber, called Part II, Descendants of James and Penelope Barber. This info comes from Katherine Barber, whose husband is a descendant of Gray Barber.

May 7, 2008 Family Tree DNA has received the kit from Kris Morgan, so we should know his results in about a month. He is the son of my brother, Scott Barber Morgan. The results will appear on the Marcum- Markham page.

May 5, 2008 The Moses Barber family is here

May 4, 2008 Just when I think I have everything figured out, life shows me that I don't know what I am talking about. LOL. It turns out that Charles Stephen Barber is from a Barber line that I did not know about previously. His line of descent is from Moses Barber, born 1755-1760, died 1800, Chatham County North Carolina, married Elizabeth. That means that Moses is most likely a brother of my James Barber. I get a headache just thinking about it. Anyway, The descent from Moses is Zadock Barber, Wesley B. Barber, William S. Barber, Charles Y Barber, and Charles Stephen Barber, and his sister, Shirley Barber McDaniel.

May 3, 2008 We have an exact match with Charles Stephen Barber and Arthur Bud Barber II for 25 markers. This means there is a 85% probability of a common ancestor within 8 generations. I am not sure who Charles Stephen Barber is, but I assume he is a descendant of Stephen P. Barber, who was a descendant of Gray Barber, that I used to write to several years ago.

May 1, 2008 The results for Frank James Markham are back, and he and I are exact matches for 12 markers! Frank is a descendant of Nimrod Markham, who was born in 1818 in Tennessee and married in 1845 in Noxubee County, Mississippi. My John Bunyon Markham was born 1819 in Tennessee and married in 1843 in Noxubee County, Mississippi.

I would guess that the elder John Markham had the following sons:

James C. Markham, born 1807

Nimrod Markham, born 1818

John Bunyon Markham, born 1819

John and his family lived with the James C. Markham family in Bienville Parish, Louisiana in 1850, and James had a young son named Nimrod.

My theory is that the elder John Markham was a brother to Abner Markham and the son of William Markham. Hopefully, DNA will help us solve that.

April 25, 2008 After hearing from Dan Sullivan, I have decided that our James Barber, born 1763, was not the son of John Barber and Mary Allen of Anson County, North Carolina. John died in 1802, and gave his son James some land. James sold the land in 1818 and was thus still in Anson County. Our James was in Clarke County, GA by 1803. So I would say we need to search elsewhere for our James.

Subject: Re: James Barber?

David,
You got me intrigued and I went ahead and did some checking. James
Barber son of John Barber, d. 1802, sold the land he inherited in
1818-see below. I found my copy of the deed (I got lucky and found it
in a few minutes-you should see my files!) In the deed it says that
both James Barber and John Studivant were residents of Anson County
when the deed was signed. So it looks like this James was still in
Anson in 1818.

April 21, 2008 I have added two biographical sketches to Chapter 12. One is on Wiley Crawford Barber, and the other one is supposedly on his son James Russell Barber, but most of it focuses on Wiley. I thought I had lost these articles years ago, as I did not find them until after my book was published in 1975. But I just discovered that I had donated them to the Oconee County, GA USGenWeb page and to the Polk County, GA archives. So they weren't lost after all, just misplaced.

April 20, 2008 I have updated info for Gray Barber, in Chapter 11.

April 19, 2008 Wow, what a surprise! Don Barber has tested his DNA and is an exact match with my three other cousins. I have been trying to contact him for months but did not have his current address. He is a direct descendant of Joshua Heard Barber, the son of James M. Barber, the brother of Wiley Crawford Barber and Silas Harrison Barber. Joshua was raised by Wiley after James died in 1855. Thanks to Don, I have updated Chapter 11.

April 18, 2008 I updated Chapter 8 on the Hambrick and Barron families. The Hambrick info comes from Mrs. Porter, a descendant, and the Barron info comes from Joe Barron's web site, a descendant.

April 13, 2008 My nephew, Kristoffer Scott Morgan, has agreed to do a DNA test. So he should receive the test this week.

April 10, 2008 This DNA stuff never ceases to amaze. Ryan Barbour, a descendant of Plyer Barber, is an exact match with Kelvin Barber of England! Kelvin traces his family back to William Barber, born 1804, in England. I don't have any answers for this!

April 4, 2008 I just received an update from my nephew, Kris Morgan. Wow! His new information is in Chapter 16.

April 3, 2008 I have received the results of both Ryan Barbour and Khris Markham, and have negative results on both.

First, Ryan Barbour is a descendant of Plyer Barber, who was a son of George Barber and his wife Elizabeth of Craig's Creek, Augusta County, Virginia. Plyer was a brother of George Barber, who married Margaret Watkins and went to Wilkes-Ogelthorpe County, Georgia and fought in the American Revolution.

Ryan's results prove that Plyer Barber and his family are not related to my family, that of James Barber and his wife Penelope of Clarke County, Georgia.

Khris Markham is a descendant of Rev. Anderson Markham, born 1816, White County, Tennessee. His results prove that Anderson was not related to my ancestor, John Bunyon Markham, who was born 1819, we think in White County, Tennessee.

April 2, 2008 I have found some sad news for my family. I have found four newspaper articles about the murder of my niece, April Marie (Slaymaker) Eaves in 1989. The articles are:

June 23, 1989, Houston Chronicle

June 23, 1989, Houston Chronicle, 2nd article

June 24, 1989, Houston Chronicle

June 27, 1989, Houston Chronicle

The killing has never been solved.

April 1, 2008 Frank Markham's kit was received by Family Tree DNA today. So it will be about six weeks before the results are back. Frank is a descendant of Nimrod Markham, who I think is a brother of John Bunyon Markham.

March 6, 2008 Khris Markham's kit was received by Family Tree DNA yesterday. So we should have his results about April 4. Hopefully, he will be an exact match with me. Khris is a descendant of Anderson Markham, who was possibly a brother of my ancestor, John Bunyon Markham.

March 4, 2008 Here is an update on Bassett.

This comes from the web page of Carol Rhead Tessen. She says her web site
will come down on March 12, 2008, so if anyone wants it, make a copy. So
here is my copy. Carol's e-mail is tessenc@comcast.net

Bassett Ancestors

I wanted to pull my hair out when I started researching my Bassett
ancestors! There are so many Bassett's named Thomas and William and
it gets very confusing trying to sort them all out. Actually I
haven't sorted them out and am desperate for some assistance. What I
have found is that Thomas Bassett arrived in America in 1635 via the
ship Truelove. I don't know if he was the first Bassett (in my line)
in this country or what his relationship is to the Massachusetts
Bassett's.

I found the following information regarding two William Bassett's in:

Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Volume I

I'm not sure how these two men work into the Bassett's I have listed
so I'm putting them here. Can anyone give me more information on
these two Williams?

Name: William Bassett, son of William Bassett, "yeoman," of Newport,
in Isle of Wight, England, had seen military service; came to
Virginia prior to 1665, when he was made commander of the workmen
employed in building a fort at Jamestown; was paid 10,000 pounds of
tobacco for his services; acquired a large estate, and died in 1672,
leaving a son, William Bassett, of "Eltham," New Kent county, member
of the council, by Bridget Cary, daughter of Capt. Miles Cary.

Name: William Bassett, of "Eltham," New Kent county, Virginia, was
son of Col. William Bassett and Joanna Burwell, his wife; was member
of the assembly of 1742-1747, but died in 1744, before the
termination thereof. He married Elizabeth Churchill, daughter of Col.
William Churchill, and was father of Burwell Bassett (q. v.).

Name: William Bassett
of "Eltham," New Kent county, was a son of Capt. William Bassett of
the same county and was born in 1670. He was a member of the house of
burgesses from New Kent in 1692, 1696, 1702 and probably in the
intervening years. On May 22, 1702, Edmund Jennings and John
Lightfoot certified that Col. William Bassett, who was elected
burgess for New Kent, "was tendered the oaths for burgess and
returned the following answer, 'I have already in several
qualifications testified my allegiance to King William's government
by taking the oaths &c.; but I am now informed, and fully satisfied
that he is dead, and therefore I think myself obliged both in
prudence and conscience to decline taking ye oaths to him at this
time.'" On May 14, 1702, the Queen appointed him a member of the
council of Virginia and he was present at sessions of that body until
April 15, 1708. Within a few years Bassett desired to retire from the
council and wrote to England to that effect, stating that neither his
health nor his private affairs would permit him to attend. This,
after some delay, was granted, but Bassett seems to have made too
high a record as an official to be allowed to remain long in
retirement, and in 1711, he was returned to the council, but declined
to accept as he was not restored to his former position in that body.
On March 11, 1714-15, he was again included in a commission to the
councilors and this time took his seat, attending regularly the
sessions until his death in 1723.

ELIZABETH BASSETT marries ALLEN BURTON and consequently is the last
BASSETT ancestor I have. Therefore, I haven't pursued the BASSETT
family beyond Generation No. 6.

I didn't know if any of the remaining family would be interested or who to
contact, I only saw your name on rootsweb.

Daniel Boone Smith and Mary Isabelle Berryhill's son CLARENCE NAPOLEON SMITH
died 6/27/1995 in Pawhuska, OK and is buried there. Between 1926-1928 he
married GRACE OLINE CAPPS. (Rootsweb had her as Aline) She was always
called Oline. She was born 8/21/1906 in Indian Territory between Porter and
Clarksville, OK to Andy Capps and Minnie Bell Welch. She went to college
and was a teacher a short while in the Haskell & Boynton area. She divorced
Clarence in 1936.
She died 10/12/1999 in Owasso and is buried at Floral Haven in the veteran's
section as she served in the Army in WWII

Thank you for listening to me. If you know of any family who would be
interested or how I might find out, let me know.

February 28, 2008 I will looking for Ryan Barbour's DNA results around March 26. So it won't be long now.

February 27, 2008 Just got back the results for Jimmie D. Barber, a descendant of James Barber through his son Gray Barber, and his DNA results are an exact match with Arthur B. Barber and John (Jack) Wiley Barber, who are descendants of James Barber's son Allen Barber.

Plus, Family Tree DNA has received the kit from Ryan Barbour, so we should know those results in a few weeks. His kit number is 114353.

February 26, 2008 Ryan Barbour has updated my info on Plyer Barber.

plyer.txt

Plus, Ryan sent me a link to the Rehobeth Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Johnson County, which is where a lot of the Barbers are buried

http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/561086207UReijQ

for Rehobeth Primitive Baptist Church in Johnston County.

It's on Raleigh Road which is historical for some Civil War history as well in the area. I live only about 5 miles from there. My dad also has a map that shows the graves of some of the Barbers, supposedly Plyer Sr. and Amy Barber Jones, daughter of Plyer. I will check it out; I need to make a better map and one I can email if it works out.

February 24, 2008 We have the DNA results back for Arthur Bud Barber II and for Jack Wiley Barber. They are an exact match for the first 12 markers. The haplogroup and numbers are

I1b 13-24-17-11-12-15-11-13-11-13-11-30

The bad news is that they didn't match anybody else that had already been tested. So, we just have to test more folks. LOL

Jimmie D Barber has also tested. We expected him to be an exact match with Arthur and Jack. We should know in a few days.

Also, Ryan Barbour has tested and sent his test back on February 21. So it may be six weeks before he gets his results. Ryan is a descendant of Plyer Barber of Johnston County, North Carolina, the brother of Captain George Barber of Georgia and the son of George Barber-Elizabeth of Craig's Creek, Augusta County, Virginia.

I sincerely hope that Ryan will be an exact match with Arthur and Jack. That would prove that my James Barber-Penelope is related to the family of George Barber-Margret Watkins that I worked so hard on in the 1970s, and to the family of Plyer Barber and their parents George and Elizabeth Barber of Craig's Creek, Augusta County, Virginia.

February 7, 2008 Three descendants of James Barber and his wife Penelope have agreed to participate in the DNA project. They are: Arthur Bud Barber II, a descendant of James Monroe Barber, Silas Harrison Barber and Allen Barber; John (Jack) Wiley Barber, a descendant of John Huntington Barber, Wiley Crawford Barber and Allen Barber; Jimmie D Barber, a descendant of Gray Barber, who was a brother of Allen Barber. We hope to have those results back by the end of February or the middle of March. Keep looking at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/barber/

John (Jack) Wiley Barber has updated my book on the John Huntington Barber family and some of his kin in Chapter 12. Thanks!

December 25, 2007 A picture of the Arthur Bud Barber II family. Arthur has agreed to participate in the Barber Family DNA project at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/barber/ so we may soon be able to connect with other Barber families.

Subject: Markham geneology

Hello, I am trying to locate David Morgan or the person currently
managing geneology Web content for the Markham family (Bell County, Texas
most recently). Please accept my apologies if there is someone new I
should contact, in which case I would appreciate any forwarding
information you may have.

Hello David,

I hope this message finds you. I don't know how we may be related but I
see your name in many of the Web sites I've been searching and there's a
small error I would like to correct. I'm a great-great-great
grandaughter of John Bunyon Markham, Jr. (died 1856 in Louisiana). My
mother is Betty Poteet Zimmerman, daughter of Mattie Bell Markham, who
was the daughter of John Bunyon Markham (Eula Inez), who was the son of
James Monroe Markham (Nannie Bell), who was the son of John Bunyon
Markham, Jr. (Sarah Upshaw).

Whew!

On this page:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dmorgan/update.html
there's a posting dated November 14, 2002 regarding my parents, Jim and
Betty Zimmerman. It says:

"November 14, 2002:

A History of Sparta, LA, maps, etc
thanks to Jim & Betty Zimmerman. (She is great-granddaughter of John
Bunyon Markham, born 1878? died 1934, great-great granddaughter of James
Monroe Markham - Nannie Bell Newman) (I think that is right)"

I'd like to correct the parenthetics ^? Betty Zimmerman is the
granddaughter of John Bunyon Markham (born 1878, died 1934, married to
Eula Inez Anderson) and the great-granddaughter of James Monroe Markham
(died 1936, married to Nannie Bell Newman).

You might add that she is a great-great granddaughter of John Bunyon
Markham, Jr.

My parents are still alive and doing well.

Please let me know if you can post this update to the site copied above.

Thank you!

I have been working on the Teaff family history and found where you had
some info on the net about John Bunion Markham. I hope it is okay for me
to include it in my family history. If not let me know and I will delete
it. I am including what I have on his granddaughter Sarah Louise Markham
that married Lemuel DecalbTeaff. They are the grandparents of Grant Teaff

obituary for you to post.

Juanita Roberts Wheeler was born April 25, 1921 in Enid, Oklahoma to Levy
Patterson Roberts and Willie Morgan Roberts. She married Paul L. Wheeler
on May 3, 1941. She died on September 11, 2002.
She is survived by two daughters, Kaye Glazener and husband Clyde
Glazener; Mary Jane Mendenhall and her husband Larry Mendenhall; seven
grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren; and her sister Elsie Johnson
of Enid. She also left behind many nephews, nieces, and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by husband Paul; brothers Barney Roberts, Earl
Roberts, Fred J. Roberts, and parents.
Her funeral was held on September 16, 2002 at the First Baptist Church in
Enid, Oklahoma, Clyde Glazener officiating.

David, without a copy of the obituary that appeared in the paper this is
the best I can do using the funeral program. I told Elsie that I would
let them know where to find it on Internet or e-mail if you post it.
Thanks David.

April 6, 2002: The Handbook of Texas has some interesting articles about The Reynolds-Matthews family. The is the Barber Watkins Reynolds famiy, son of George Reynolds-Sarah Barber.

February 7, 2002: Here is a picture of Tabitha Markham and her husband, Thomas Jefferson Johnson. Tabitha was a sister of James Monroe Markham. They were married 8/20/1868 in Bell county, TX, according to Betty, a descendant.

T.J. and Tabitha (350 kb) The writing on the bottom of the picture says "Thomas Jefferson Johnson, b. 6/17/1844 Butler Co. OH, d. 1/28/1924 Tulia Texas - Tabitha Markham Johnson, b. 12/21/1855, Union Parish LA, d. 2/2/1897, Summer Mill, Bell CO. TX. I think Tabitha was 2 or 3 years olders than that.

I need to add this marriage record from Bienville Parish, and this fragment of the 1850 Census of Bienville Parish.

April 19, 2000: I got some updated information from Arthur Barber on his family. This would update the chapter on James Monroe Barber.

April 17, 2000: I heard from Don Barber again, the descendant of Joshua Heard Barber, who was the son of James M. Barber and grandson of Allen Barber-Frances Crawford. Joshua's father died in 1855 in Talladega County AL. and Joshua apparently was raised by his uncle, Wiley Crawford Barber in Van Wert/Rockmart, GA. Here is a picture of Wiley's house, I think, and a newspaper article about the family. I also heard from Arthur Bud Barber II today. He is a grandson of Karl Kelton Barber, great grandson of John Shay Barber and great great grandson of James Monroe Barber-Sarah E. Wood. He signed my guestbook!

March 10, 2000: Wow, time really flies when you get old. Sorry that I haven't updated this page since November. I received another transcipt on Caleb Wood's revolutionary war pension application that looks like it might contain a little more information. Plus, we now know that Charles Wood of Charles' Choice, Frederick Co. MD. was married to Sarah Brightwell on 10 May 1748 in Frederick County. Also got a huge file on Uncle Ed Markham family.

November 14, 1999: Got some more info, in a descendency chart, on Portman-Berryhill from Clyde.

Historical Marker:
Family History of R. T. Barber
                   U. S. Marshal
      R. T. Barber, was 1/2 Creek Indian, whose mother's name was Posey. He
married Alice Grimsley. She had originally married a man named BEAR. By him
she had two children, Myrtle and Tom. Myrtle was raised by R. T. Barber as
his own. Since she had no Indian blood she received no allotment. R. T.
Barber gave her 1/2 of his allotment, which was on the east side of the large
Twin Mound on the North. R. T. and Alice had seven other children, Shelley,
Dovie, Pearl, Lulu, Nettie, John, and Walter.
Shelley married Sam Griffith. They had two children, Howard and Earl.
Dovie married Steve Horner. They had seven children, Bertha, Lena, Edna,
Lola, Dale, Robert and Lois. Pearl married Robert "Bob" Stewart. They had
three girls, Dovie, Myrtle, and Ima Jean. Then she married Floyd Jones. They
had one daughter, Velva. Lula Barber married Jim Huston. They had three
children, Sammy, Ray and Mary. Nettie Barber married William "Bill" Coleman
by whom she had three children, Alice
Dolly, and Gladys, known as "Shortie". Then she married Jim Henson and they
had four children. John Barber married Cora, they had five children, Johnny,
Paul, Vida, Gert and Goldie. Myrtle "Bear" Barber married Andrew Stewart. She
was commonly known as "Aunt Myrt". They had eight children, Shelley, Tom,
Bill, Jim, El, Leora, and Robie and one child that died as an infant.
The allotments of R. T. Barber and his children stretched from the Twin
Mounds to Peoria Ave. along 141st. The city of Glenpool sits on the Pearl
Barber Jones allotment. Four of Steve and Dovie Horners children still live
on the original Creek Indian allotment between Glenpool and the four laned
Highway 67.

Will go back and try to find the others you asked for. Shelley Barber
Griffith is there I know. I also think we will find a lot of R.T. Barber's
offspring around there. It was getting late and I wasn't able to continue. I
did get photos of the above.
You asked about "Dump" Berryhill. He was Bluford Berryhill, father of
Bluford, Carl C. and George F. Berryhill. This is according to a historical
marker in the cemetery.

October 4, 1999: Just heard from Bill Dunn, a descendant of Susan Jane Barber - Samuel Holliday, so will be updating Chapter 11 soon.

October 3, 1999: Got some more info on Burwell Hambrick, thanks to Ike Porter.

September 28, 1999: Can anybody help on the marriage of Burwell H. Hambrick to Elizabeth Barber, daughter of George Barber Jr - Elizabeth Reynolds? I just got a letter from Ike Porter and I realize I don't have any proof for this marriage. This info came from a family member over 25 years ago, but I can't remember who. Perhaps Mrs. H.D. White who lived in Kearns, Utah, or from Mrs. Dennison's article in the DAR Magazine of 1959, I just can't remember now.

  Burwell/Berrell/Burrell H. Hambrick, b. ca1810, d. 1868, last resided
in Van Zandt County, TX , was my G-G-G-Grandfather. I know from Census
records that his wife was Elizabeth but I had no idea of her Surname
until now. Needless to say I was thrilled to find this info on the
Barber website. I am very interested in your supposition/statement found
in Chapter 8 that she is the daughter of George Barber. I read the
Barber Wills, Bible Records etc but found no other mention of Elizabeth.
Is there circumstantial evidence or documentation to support her
marriage and parents?
Burwell's first son (my ancestor) was named George B. I had always
thought the "B." was for Burwell. If Elizabeth's father was George
Barber then it would be logical that Burwell's son was George Barber and
not George Burwell.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated as I have been
working on Burwell's wife for twenty plus years now.
Thanks!!!

February 20, 1999: Here is a report I got from Rootsweb today on the surnames Absher/Abshire, Brandon, Durham, Gillespie, Hollis, Travelstead, Wood. I think that is all. It is dated December and it is huge. Billy Curry Steely sent me a huge amount of data on the Brandon family that I haven't had time to digest yet. For the past 25 years, I thought my ancestor, George Brandon, grandfather of Mary Ann McGuire that married Isaac Gillespie in 1791, Rowan Co NC, was born in 1702 in Scotland. Wrong! He was born in Pennsylvania!

February 13, 1999: Here is a report I got from Rootsweb back in December about researchers and about info in their database on the surnames Barber, Bassett, Berryhill, Markham, Posey. It is a huge file and I just now took the time to look through it. Enjoy!

February 12, 1999: I have added a lot on the Wood family, thanks to Jack Wood. Calvin Dorris also has a great web site on Wood. Plus I have been adding a lot of material to chapter19 on Harris Berryhill, the son of Pleasant Berryhill, who married Hulda Gossett, thanks to Sandra Barton. I find it hard to accept that someone that was born the same year as me has a user ID of GrannyBart. That sounds old!

February 2, 1999: Welcome, Wayne Stockton! It was great to see your name on the Posey forum today! I sure appreciate all those Indian applications you had back in 1973. I have added a lot more to chapter 19 since then. You might want to take a look. To continue with the routine news: I have added some hot links to chapter 16, to obituaries for my family: Leta Hollis Barber, Sue Barber Morgan, and uncle George Fyke.

January 27, 1999: Okay, I finally figured out what year this is. This site is now searchable!

January 10, 1999: If you are reading this, then you must have found the new location of this page at http://www.nyx.net/~damorgan/. Hopefully, it will be more accessible than it was on the xoom site.

January 5, 1999: I now have a mail list set up for the Bassett surname. I am the listowner of this one. The instructions to subscribe are the same as for Berryhill below. I also have five GenConnect boards set up for the surname Bassett. If you have a will, Bible records, obit for any one named Bassett, or just want top ost on the query board, there is a place at http://www.efn.org/~dmorgan/bassett.html I also have GenConnect boards for the surname Hollis which will be soon on this web site.

December 27, 1998: There is now a mail list for the Berryhill surname. It doesn't belong to me, I just subscribed to it. To subscribe, send an e-mail to BERRYHILL-L-request@rootsweb.com with the one word, subscribe, in the BODY of the message. The Subject: line will be ignored. After you have subscribed, you can then send messages to the list by sending them to BERRYHILL-L@rootsweb.com. I didn't know there was already a mailing list for POSEY. To subscribe, send an e-mail to POSEY-L-request@rootsweb.com. There is a GenConnect Query Board available for the surname Posey and Coker. Well heck, I'll just give you the URL for the surname boards, and you can go look for yourself, at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/indx/FamAssoc.html

December 21, 1998: Thanks to Eve Weeks, I have new information on Mary T. Conger, the third wife of Greensby Wetherford Barber. I had incorrectly stated that she was a MRS. Eve gave me a rundown of the whole family. I want to wish best wishes to Jim Reynolds, a new e-mail friend, who just got out of the hospital. Jim is a descendant of both Reese Barber and his brother Robert Barber. Jim is descended from John S. Barber-Nora Gray. John was the son of Greensby Wetherford Barber by his marriage to his first wife and first cousin, Frances Barber. So there are some updates to chapter 5. Last but not least, if you are descended from Reese Watkins, check out Yancy Watkins' new web site.

November 28, 1998: I have been working on this file for a long time, trying to get it in a readable format. I think I have most of it done. I will keep working on it. It is the ancestry of William Commodore Hollis, who married Mary Myrtle Barber, sister of my grandfather, Davis D. Barber. Thanks to Richard Dean Hollis, who did the search and shares a common ancestry with W.C. Hollis, that of the first two James Hollis's in the line, this line goes back six generations from W. C. Hollis! This updates Chapter 15 of my Barber book.

November 25, 1998: Happy Thanksgiving! Keith Hudson has sent me some interesting info about his connection to the Berryhill family through the Hudson family.

November 20, 1998: I have made corrections to the Posey-Hopwood-Smith Bible at the end of Chapter 17, thanks to Heidi Smith. If anybody else has a photocopy of this Bible and wants to take a shot at corrections, please do so. I just typed up the will of John McGuire, who died in Sumner county Tennessee in 1803. He was the son of John McGuire Sr-Mary Brandon of Rowan county NC and the father-in-law of Isaac Gillespie.

November 18, 1998: Thanks to Bruce Berryhill, a descendant of John Dallas Berryhill, I know a lot more about Benjamin Posey! I also typed up the will of Isaac Gillespie, who died in Williamson County Tennessee in 1828. He was the father of my Lydia Durham, and the son of Thomas and Naomi Thompson Gillespie.

November 7, 1998: I have typed up the abstract of the Thyatira Presbyterian Church Cemetery of Rowan County, North Carolina and also the will of Thomas Gillespie Sr, who died in 1796. Thomas and his wife Naomi both died on the same day. They are my ancestors and also the great-grandparents of James Knox Polk.

October 4, 1998: Here is the 1900 Soundex for the surname BARBER for Indian Territory. My great grandfather, James M. Barber, is listed as white, and two of his brothers, Robert T. Barber and Benjamin A. Barber, are listed as Indian. They were all living in the Creek Nation, Robert and Benjamin near Mounds and James near Wagoner. SIlas H. Barber is living with his oldest son Robert in this census.

October 4, 1998: Thanks to an e-mail friend in Waco, Tx, that sent it to me via snail mail, I now have the Post Oak Cemetery online. This cemetery is in Bell County, Texas, where much of my Markham family is buried, and also some of the Upshaws. Here is a very short newspaper article about the stabbing death of my great-great grandfather, John B. Markham in Minden Louisiana in 1856.

September 26, 1998: Here is additional info on Plyer Barber, thanks to Arlene Lewis.

September 3, 1998: I have updated Chapter 19, thanks to Candace Mullins, who is a descendant of Baxter Self and Suky Berryhill.

September 3, 1998: I've just received another excerpt from the book Blood on the Bluebonnets by Bill Lehmann. Thanks Bill!

September 2, 1998: I've just received new information on the children of Bill Posey, ( chapter 18 ) from Bill Lehmann. Lehmann wrote the book, "Blood on the Bluebonnets" published in 1994. Here is the new information.

August 19, 1998: I've just taken over as the coordinator/webmaster for Limestone County, Texas, a very important place for my Barber, Posey families.

August 16, 1998: The newest addition to chapter 14, and the newest cousin in the Barber family is Alexandra Nicole Key, a new native of Florida. Grandmother Betty Sue is overjoyed.

August 9, 1998: I added a link to the discussion on Jeremiah Posey that is taking place on GenForum, to Chapter 9. It turns out that Jeremiah was the son of William C. Posey and wife Agnes of South Carolina, and that Jeremiah and his brother married sisters in Benton County Alabama. This was before Jeremiah married Eliza Franklin in Nacogdoches County, Texas. So this is a different Posey family from Benjamin Posey.

August 7, 1998: I am typing in some correspondence I received from Richard M. Rodgers of Georgia. It will be an addition to Chapter 19 on the Posey and Berryhill families.

July 30, 1998: I have just typed in the Posey-Hopwood-Smith Bible, published in 1832, that is now owned by Heidi Smith. This replaces the Posey Bible that was in Chapter 17 of my book. I am not sure I have translated it correctly, some of it was extremely hard to read.

July 27, 1998: I am in the process of typing in the Creek Indian Letters that mention a Derrisaw (many different spellings) or were witnessed by a Derrisaw or a Berryhill. The Derrisaws and Berryhills were allies of William McIntosh, who was murdered in 1825 for signing the Treaty of Indian Springs, givng more land to the State of Georgia. The Derrisaws mentioned in these letters are Creek Chiefs, and the sons of James Durouzeaux, who was an interpreter for the Creeks and lived in the Creek Nation with his Creek wife. The letters are at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgwnar/creekletters.html. The letters were originally abstracted by Thelma Nolen Cornfeld.

July 26, 1998: I now have information that my Berryhill line goes like this:
Alexander Berryhill- Lady Jane Cartwright
-- John Berryhill - Martha Bigness
---- Joseph Berryhill - Hanna (Creek) (both lived & died NC)
------ John Berryhill - Martha Elizabeth Derrisaw
Much thanks to Ken Berryhill for the info!

July 25, 1998: Thanks to Jere Fletcher, I now have some information on Plyer Barber and his descendants. Link added to Chapter 1

I just received a ton of information on my Gillespie family. I am descended from Thomas Gillespie and his wife Naomi Thompson on my father's side of the family, and I joined the Sons of the American Revolution in 1973 because of Thomas's service in the American Revolution. His son Isaac, also my ancestor, also fought in the Revolution. Lydia Gillespie, a daughter of Thomas and Naomi Gillespie, was the grandmother of President James Knox Polk.
