This picture was taken about 1910. Bud Markham was very young, Mattie Bell died in 1913 from spinal meningitis, and Walter and Mable had just gotten married.
The furtherest back I have been able to trace my Markham family is to John Markham, who was living in Marion County, Alabama in 1830. I believe he came from White County, Tennessee. I believe he had a son named John Bunyon Markham who married Sarah Elizabeth Upshaw 3 September 1843 in Noxubee County, Mississippi. They were in Bienville Parish, Louisiana by 1849. John is listed on one record as a junior, so was probably the son of John Markham who was in Marion County Alabama in 1830 and in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana in 1859.

If this is my Markham family, then John Bunyon Markham was probably the little boy between 5 to 10 years of age above. Lewis Markham may have been a younger brother or possibly the oldest son of John Markham Sr. Abner was probably a brother of John.

The other Markhams were not found in Noxubee County in 1840, although they must have been nearby.
For some reason, John Bunyon Markham was at the home of D. J. Morris in Minden, Louisiana. Morris stabbed him in the side and the chest and he died, in February 1856, and was buried in Minden. The judge listened to Morris and then let him go without charges. Sarah was left with five small children, Permelia Ann, Emily Jane, Tabitha Elizabeth, born 1851, James Monroe, born 1853, and John Bunyon, born 1855. Here is the settlement of his estate.
It is believed that John had brothers named Nimrod and Carroll Markham. A descendant of Nimrod Markham and I have matched on a DNA Y-chromosone test. Plus we know that he had at least one brother, James C. Markham, born in Tennessee in 1807.
Sarah Elizabeth Upshaw was the daughter of John Upshaw and his wife Tabitha Lawless. She was born in Elbert County, Georgia in 1825, although most census records show her as born in Alabama. Her sister Mary married Lorenzo D. Thomas in Noxubee County, Mississippi in 1847. Sarah's sister Emily J. Upshaw married Albert Warr 26 Oct 1848 in Noxubee County. John Upshaw is the son of Forrester Upshaw and wife Ann Faulkner, and grandson of Leroy Upshaw, who fought in the American Revolution from Amherst County, Virginia, later moved to Elbert County, Georgia, and wife Elizabeth Bradley.

Is this the same James C. Markham that was living in San Augustine County, Texas in 1880? He is 72 years old, with a young wife, Mary A, born in 1828, and a step-son Eli Poindexter, born in 1863. This James was born in Tennessee, his father was born in Virginia and his mother was born in North Carolina. Where are his sons, James, born 1839, John, born 1841, and Nimrod, born 1843? Nimrod was apparently living in San Augustine County in 1880 also, aged 36, with children. The original census is very faint.

This is the only census I can find family on. The 1860 Census of Bienville Parish, Louisiana was apparently lost. The Abell Warr above was Albert Warr, the brother-in-law of Sarah E. Upshaw Markham and the husband of Emily Upshaw Warr. It is a poor census taker that won't write down the ages of a family.

Sarah Elizabeth Upshaw Schultz was a friend I met in 1976, when I first started my Markham-Upshaw research. She was well on her way to being in the NSDAR from her descent from Leroy Upshaw of Amherst County, Virginia. She is descended from the Allen Upshaw on the 1850 Census of Bienville Parish, Louisiana, age 19, (full name Thomas Allen Upshaw) down through John J. Upshaw and then Thomas Allen Upshaw.

Grace Markham was the daughter of Walter Markham and Mabel Goodnight. She was raised by her Goodnight grandparents while her brothers lived with their father in Milam County. She later married John Davis. I worked with her granddaughter Sharon Winter at a grocery store in Austin Texas in the 1970s.
Ralph Markham died Feb 3, 1934, just before his father John Bunyon Markham died on Feb 12.
Mattie Bell Markham, daughter of John and Inez, married Rankin Moore Poteet. Their daughter, Betty, married (1) Frank William Steinle, (2) Jim Zimmerman. You can read more about them on Art Moore's web site

Markham in Canyon, Texas in 1922, the son of Earnest William Markham and
his first wife Rebecca Mae Bassett. Although he and his brothers always
went by the name Morgan, they were not officially adopted until 1942.
Their brother Billy was living with their Bassett grandparents in the 1930
census. The picture to the right shows Earnest W (Bud) Markham with
his oldest son Don in Kansas City Missouri in 1949. Here is Don's World
War II draft registration. Don was my
father, he died in 2006.
