Matthew Barber

Matthew Barber was the second son of George and Margaret (Watkins) Barber. According to his tombstone in Butts County, Georgia, he was born in Walker County, North Carolina in 1767. There is no Walker County, North Carolina, it was most probably Johnston County, later Wake County, North Carolina, and the year of birth is believed to be early by two years. He is listed as age 80 on the 1850 census of Butts County, which would make him born in 1770.
Matthew Barber married Mrs. Johannah Weldon Johnson, a widow, on 24 February 1803 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia.14 Matthew and Johannah had moved to Butts County by 1826, where they lived out their lives. Matthew died 11 May 1859, and his wife Johannah died 15 September 1866.
Matthew Barber served in the Georgia Militia Dragoons from 1 November 1794 to 31 December 1794.15
Matthew and Johannah had two sons born to them, George W. Barber born 8 December 1803 and Josiah W. Barber, born 1808.

George died 18 July 1883, Butts County. Louisa Was born 21 April
1809, died 1 October 1879. The town of Lovejoy, Georgia was named for
her father.

A. Matthew Tolbert Barber, born 1829, married Elizabeth Jane
Shepherd, 25 April 1849, Butts County, Ga.28
He served as a private in Co. B, Ochiltree Regt. Tex Infantry. On
Oct. 10th 1862 he was detailed to cook for the sick at the
hospital in Desarc, Arkansas. On Nov 22, 1862 he was sick at
Camp Nelson. Matthew and Jane are both buried in Hickory Hill
Cemetery, Titus County, Texas. Matthew died in 1890 and Jane in
1898.

missed Susan as a daughter of Josiah Woods Barber when I
published my book because she was already married by 1850 and so
did not show up on the 1850 census with her parents. Yet she
lived very close to Josiah Woods Barber and his father Matthew
Barber on the 1850 census with her husband Robert William
Allison. Plus Josiah Woods Barber had two daughters in the 1840
census, one that was 5-10 years old, and the other one that was
under 5 years of age. The youngest one was Martha Joannah who
married Robert Roebuck, and the other one could be Susan A, born
1832. Plus her older brother Matthew and younger brother George
also settled in Titus county TX eventually. It was Joe Godsey's
wife Lilma Hart Godsey who first asked if I had any proof of
Susan's parentage. Sadly, I do not. But Lilma did tell me that
the administor of Robert William Allison's estate was Matthew T
Barber! This is very intriging indeed! If Matthew was Susan's
older brother, this would certainly make sense.

July 1977 to April 1980. He moved to Hernando, Fla in
2002 from Indianapolis, Ind. He loved his pets P.J. and
Jake. Surviving are his wife, Glenna; children, Clay

Mrs Margaret Genevieve Cook, 78, of Hobbs, died Wednesday, June
25, 2003, in Hobbs. She was born on April 20, 1925 in Hunt
County, Texas to Haskell Charles "Pop" and Cleo Elwood Conder. She
was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mary Maxine
Dennis and Opal Prater; and three brothers, Bill Joe, Ralph Elwood
and Raymond Vincent Conder. She is survived by her husband, Lynn
of Hobbs; a daughter, Carroll Jean Leatherwood of Clovis; two
sons, Charles Barnes of Calahan, CO and Monte Cook of Carlsbad,
four brothers, Jerry Conder of Reno, NV, Don Lee Conder of
Lubbock, Robert Olin Conder and Roy Lee Conder, both of Terrell,
Texas, eight grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

Burial was at Prairie Haven Memorial Park in Hobbs.

Will of Matthew Barber Georgia ) In the name of Almight God Amen, I, Matthew Butts County ) Barber of the county aforsaid, being of sound and Will Book A ) disposing mind and memory, but considering the uncertainty Page 47 ) of life, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, in manner following, that is to say 1. I desire to be buried in a decent christian like manner. 2. It is my wil that all of my just debts should be paid. 3. I do give and bequeath to my dear wife Joannah Barber all my estate both real and personal during her natural lifetime, or widowhood. Provided my wife should marry, then and in that case it is my will that my wife should only have a certain lot of land know as sc. 76' seventy six in the first district of Houston County originally, now crawford. 4. It is my will at the death of my wife, or provided she should marry, that all my property should be divided between my two sons and their children equally, with the exception of the above named lot of land. If my wife should marry then and in that event, the lot of land I give and bequeath to her forever. It is my will that my wife shall have all she may make during her lifetime or widowhood. 5. It is my will that all my estate should be divided between my two sons to wit; George W. Barber and Josiah W. Barber at the death of my wife, only as above exceptions. And that my property should be lotted off, if convenient, into two lots equally, if not convenient put up sold and money equaly divided. 6. It is my will that my dear wife Johannah Barber, and James H. Stark shall act as Executrux and Executor to this will, and that James H. Stark shall attend to the busines, and have reasonable compensation for his services. George W. Barber, the eldest son of Matthew and Joannah Barber, served as Justice of the Inferior Court in 1834 for Butts County, Georgia. When the Congregational Methodist Church Asembly was formed in Butts County, he was one of the first representatives.31

I am beginning to think that the name Mathew S. Barber in the will of George W. Barber, should actually be Madison S. Barber. It was very hard to read. If somebody has access to the microfilm for Butts County, or has access to the courthouse, perhaps they could get a fresh reading and let me know.
Will of George W. Barber Georgia ) In the name of God Amen, I George W. Barber Butts County ) of the County and State aforsaid, being of advanced age Will book A. ) and in feeble health, but of sound and disposing mind pages 225-226 ) and memory, and knowing that I must shortly depart this life, deem it right and proper both as respects myself and family that I should make a disposition of the property with which a kind providence has blessed, do make this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all wills heretofore made by me. 1. It is my desire that my body shall be buried in a decent and Christian like manner. My soul I trust will return to rest with God who gave it. 2. It is my will and I so direct that all my just debts be paid out of my estate by my Executor, hereinafter to be appointed as soon after my death as practicable. 3. It is my will and desire that after my death my entire property of every kind, both real and personal, shall be sold by Executor, and the proceeds together with what ready money I may then have on hand. My notes, if any, and other evidences of debt be equally divided among my children than living, and if any of my children shall be dead, leaving child or children living, then such child or children to stand in the place of their deceased parents, to wit: Josiah W. Barber, Sophia M. Banks, Joanna E. Fretwell, George S. Barber, Madison S. Barber, trustee for his wife Eugenia Barber and the children she now has and those she may here afer have by the said Madison S. Barber, Louisa J. Henderson, and the children of my deceased daughter Terrissa An Fretwell to wit; Sara D. Couch, Thomas Baughan, Joanna Maddox, and Robert Fretwell, share and share alike.
