Silas Harrison Barber, the second son of Allen and Frances Barber, was born 28 April 1823 in Clarke County, Georgia.
He moved with his parents to Alabama, and he was the bondsman for the marriage of his sister Susan Jane to Samuel Holliday, 12 December 1843 in Tallappoosa County.
Silas traveled to Nacogdoches County, Texas in 1846 with his future in-laws, Benjamin and Eliza (Berryhill) Posey. He married their daughter Sarah Ann Posey, 6 December 1846, in Nacogdoches County, Texas.109
Silas was a Justice of the Peace in Nacogdoches County in 1856.110 Shortly after this Silas and his wife Sarah and their small children, Robert Thomas, Eliza H., Benjamin A., James Monroe, John C., Silas Harrison Barber Jr., Alfred C., and Martha Susan moved to Limestone County, Texas.
Silas H. Barber went off to fight for the Confederacy in 1861, leaving his wife with nine children to care for, the oldest being 14. Sarah had her parents living nearby, and most of her brothers and sisters, but it still must have been a trying time.
Silas H. Barber enlisted
at the age of 38, at Springfield, Limestone County, Texas on October 10,
1861, by D. M. Pendergast, to fight with the 10th (Nelson's) Regiment,
Texas Infantry. He was mustered in October 23, 1861 at Virginia Point,
Texas (near Galveston) by Lt. McMahan. Silas was a private, and enlistd
for the duration of the war. (Company B)
He was detailed as a mechanic August 28, 1862, and returned to duty September 1, 1862.
Silas, and most of the 10th Texas Regiment, were captured by the Union Army at Fort Hindman, Arkansas Post, Arkansas, January 11, 1863. He was made a prisoner of war, and was shipped to the Union Prison at Camp Douglas, Illinois.
Silas was exchanged on April 9, 1863, at City Point, Virginia, and entered the hospital in Petersburg, Virginia on April 10th. He was well enough to rejoin his outfit October 29, 1863, and fought the rest of the war.
Silas Harrison Barber died 12 October 1910 in Bixby, Tulsa County, Oklahoma, and is buried beside his eldest son Robert in the Twin Mounds Cemetery. I recently came across the 1910 Census of Oklahoma, which shows that Silas was living with his son Thomas R. Barber in May 1910 in Bixby, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. This was a few months before he died. There are lines marked through this family for some reason.

Sim Griffith. About a year after this book was published, in
1976, I met Shellie Barber. Shellie told me the middle name of
Silas was Harrison, the first time I had heard that. She also
showed me two pictures of Silas. I had never seen a picture of
my great-great grandfather before. I still have never seen a
picture of my great grandfather, his son James Monroe Barber.
Shellie also had the ledger that Silas kept, which she let me
photocopy, and I now have that online (scroll to the end of the
chapter). Thanks to Mary Ann Hesselgesser for still having a
copy of my typed version of the ledger after all these years.
Besides mentioning all the different types of trees he planted
in Indian Territory, Silas also mentioned that he was born in
Watkinsville, Georgia in 1823. When Shellie died a few years
ago at 103 years of age, she was the oldest living member of the
Creek Nation. I wonder what happened to all the great stuff
Shellie had? She lived west of Bixby, Oklahoma in 1976. Shellie
also told me that the father of Benjamin Posey was Bennett
Posey, which completely slipped my mind for twenty years.
