Shadrach Franklin (ca. 1810 - ca. 1890)

First Generation

1.     Shadrach (or Shadrick) "Shade" FRANKLIN (son of Abraham "Abe" Franklin and Sarah "Sallie" Spears) was born between 1810 and 1812 in North Carolina. He died ca. 1900 in Letcher County, KY.

Marriages/Children

Jaela ADDINGTON (daughter of William ADDINGTON Jr. and Sarah "Sally" STALLARD) was born about 1814 in Scott County, VA. She died about 1869 in Letcher County, KY.Shadrach (or Shadrick) "Shade" FRANKLIN and Jaela ADDINGTON were married on 27 Apr 1840 in Scott County, VA. 

Shadrach (or Shadrick) "Shade" FRANKLIN and Jaela ADDINGTON had the following children:

        +2      i. Eliza Jane FRANKLIN (born in 1842).
        +3     ii. Mary "Polly" FRANKLIN (born in 1844).
          4     iii. Elzey P. F. FRANKLIN was born in 1845 in Russell County, VA.
        +5     iv. Byrd (or Bird) FRANKLIN (born on 29 Jan 1847).
        +6      v. Andrew Jackson "Jack" FRANKLIN (born on 17 Oct 1850).
        +7     vi. Sarah FRANKLIN (born about 1853).

Eliza Jane (Louisia) BENTLEY (daughter of Solomon BENTLEY and Mary "Polly" YONTS/YOUNCE) was born in Mar 1835 in Virginia.  Her date of death is unknown.  Shadrach (or Shadrick) "Shade" FRANKLIN and Eliza Jane (Louisia) BENTLEY were married on 16 May 1869 in Letcher County, KY.1 The marriage was performed by Solomon Yontz, County Clerk, in presence of Susanna Yontz.

Shadrach (or Shadrick) "Shade" FRANKLIN and Eliza Jane (Louisia) BENTLEY had the following children:

            8      i. Lizy FRANKLIN was born in Mar 1870 in Letcher County, KY.
          +9     ii. Amanda FRANKLIN (born in Oct 1870).
        +10    iii. Martha FRANKLIN (born in 1873).
        +11    iv. Mary Belle FRANKLIN (born in 1875).
          12     v. Crissa "Crissie" FRANKLIN was born in Apr 1879 in Letcher County, KY.
 

        Shadrach Franklin appeared in the census in 1850 in Russell County, VA. "Shadrick" Franklin is listed on p. 321, as the householder in dwelling number 1409. He reported his age as 38, and his place of birth as North Carolina. Other members of the household were:
                    Jahala, 36, born Scott County, VA;
                    Eliza Jane, 8, born Russell County, VA;
                    Polly, 6, born Russell County, VA;
                    Elsey P.F., 3, born Russell County, VA;
                    Bird, 4, born Russell County, VA;
                    Andrew, 1, born Russell County, VA; and
                    Sally Franklin, 70, born North Carolina.

        He appeared in the census in 1860 in Letcher County, KY. The census includes the following report for household #586:
                    Shadrick Franklin, 53, b. NC
                    Jahaly, 43, b. VA
                    Elzy, 15, b. VA
                    Burd, 14, b. VA
                    Andrew J., 12, b. VA
                    Sarah, 7, b. VA

        In a special Kentucky Agricultural Census2 of the same year, on page 31 of Schedule 4, "Productions of Agriculture for the Letcher County District", an entry is made for Shadric [sic] Franklin. In summary, it reports he had 50 acres of improved land and 110 acres of unimproved, with a combined value of $600. His farm implements were valued at $6.

His livestock consisted of:

  • two milk cows,

  • four other cattle,

  • 25 sheep, and

  • 15 swine, with total value of $75.

His reported agricultural production consisted of:

  • 21 bushels of wheat,

  • 150 bushels of indian corn,

  • 20 pounds of tobacco,

  • 30 pounds of wool,

  • 30 bushels of potatoes,

  • 40 pounds of butter,

  • 25 pounds of flax,

  • 16 pounds of molasses.

Estimated value of "homemade manufactures" was $18, and value of animals slaughtered was $34.

        An early land record for Shadrach "Shade" Franklin in Letcher County, KY, appears in Deed Book C-D, p. 305. He transferred title to 140 acres, located on Colly Creek, to John A. Hall by deed dated 2 Jan 1866.

        He owned 100 acres on Ash Tree Branch of Crafts Colly, by land patent granted on 7 May 1867 in Letcher County, KY.3  The land patent was granted on 7 May 1867, based upon land survey of date 10 July 1866.

        He appeared in the census in 1870 in Letcher County, KY. The 1870 census of Letcher County records, in Precinct 1, household #45:

                    Eliza, 56, keeping house, b. KY
                    Andrew, 19, farmer, b. KY
                    Manerva, 19, keeping house, b. KY
                    Sarah, 16
                    Bird, 23, farmer
                    Jane, 21, keeping house
                    Lizy, 3 months (b. Mar 1870)

        In a deed dated 7 Nov 1872 and recorded in Letcher County on 6 Jan 1873, Shade and Elizah (sic) Franklin deeded to Bird Franklin a tract of land on Colly Creek.

        He appeared in the census in 1880 in Letcher County, KY. The 1880 Letcher County census reports, at page 30, #557:
                    Shade Franklin, 70, b. NC
                    Louisia, 45, b. KY
                    Manda, 9
                    Martha, 7
                    Mary B., 5
                    Crissa, 2

        By deed of 11 June 1888, recorded in Deed Book "O", p. 591, Shaderick (sic) Franklin deeded to Eliza Jane Franklin, his wife, 50 acres which he had bought from Greenway Hall on 2 Feb 1885. The purpose of the transfer was so that she may "raise and take care of Mary Bell, Martha, and Crissie Franklin, minor children of mine and my wife Eliza Jane Franklin."


Second Generation

2.     Eliza Jane FRANKLIN was born in 1842 in Scott County, VA. She died on 24 Jul 1930.

        +James Preston HALL (son of Isham (Isom) HALL II and Jane MULLINS) was born about 1836 in Russell County, VA. At the time of his marriage to Eliza(h) Franklin, he was a resident of Wise County, Virginia, according to entry of marriage in Letcher County records. Eliza Jane FRANKLIN and James Preston HALL were married on 4 Dec 1856 in Letcher County, KY.4

Eliza Jane FRANKLIN and James Preston HALL had the following children:

         +13      i. Engleburt\Ingerburt HALL (born in 1865 or 1867).
         +14      ii. Isham\Isom HALL (born in 1867).
         +15     iii. Richard S. HALL (born in 1868 or 1870).
           16     iv. Margrett HALL was born in 1873.
         +17      v. Marion "Buck" HALL (born in 1875 or 1876).
           18     vi. Emily HALL was born in 1879.
        +19     vii. Lockie M. HALL.
        +20    viii. Lucinda J. HALL (born in 1868).
           21     ix. Lee HALL.

3.     Mary "Polly" FRANKLIN was born in 1844 in Russell County, VA.

        +Nehemiah CRASE (son of Campbell C. CRACE and Mahala CRAFT) was born in 1841.  Mary "Polly" FRANKLIN and Nehemiah CRASE were married on 30 Dec 1859.


5.     Byrd (or Bird) FRANKLIN was born on 29 Jan 1847 in Russell County, VA. He died on 1 Jan 1927 in Letcher County, KY. He was buried in Crafts Colly (Ermine), Letcher County, KY.

        +Mary Jane (Jane) ADDINGTON (daughter of John ADDINGTON/EDINGTON and Cora Lucinda ROBERTS) was born on 25 Dec 1849 in Russell County, VA. She died on 21 Sep 1933 in Letcher County, KY. She was buried in Crafts Colly (Ermine), Letcher County, KY.  Byrd (or Bird) FRANKLIN and Mary Jane (Jane) ADDINGTON were married on 2 Jun 1869 in Letcher County, KY.5 The marriage was performed by Solomon Yontz, MME Church, in presence of John Adington and Harvy Stallard. 

Byrd (or Bird) FRANKLIN and Mary Jane (Jane) ADDINGTON had the following children:

           22     i. Eliza (Louisia) FRANKLIN was born about 1870 in Kentucky. She died on 23 Feb 1885 in Letcher County, KY. She was buried in Crafts Colly (Ermine), Letcher County, KY.
        +23     ii.  Dora FRANKLIN (born about 1875).
          24     iii. Jaley FRANKLIN was born on 27 Jan 1878 in Letcher County, KY.6 She died on 11 Mar 1885 in Letcher County, KY. She was buried in Crafts Colly (Ermine), Letcher County, KY.
        +25     iv. Emaline FRANKLIN (born in Apr 1880).
        +26     v. Mattie FRANKLIN (born in Mar 1884).
        +27     vi. Elzy FRANKLIN (born in Sep 1885).
        +28     vii. Ida FRANKLIN (born in Nov 1892).

6.     Andrew Jackson "Jack" FRANKLIN  was born on or before 17 Oct 1850 in Russell County, VA. [NOTE:  A. J. Franklin's tombstone reports his date of birth as 17 Oct 1850. However, in the 1880 census he listed his age as 38. He also was reported as a one-year-old in his father's household in the 1850 census of Russell County, VA. In the 1860 Letcher County census, his age was reported by his father as 12. Therefore, one can assume his birth was sometime between 1848-1850 -- but almost certainly earlier than 17 Oct 1850.]  He died on 22 Mar 1923 in Letcher County, KY.

        +Manerva "Nervie" SERGENT (daughter of David S. SERGENT and Christena "Crissy" MORGAN) was born on 1 Mar 1852 in Kentucky. She died on 5 Oct 1888 in Letcher County, KY. She was buried in Crafts Colly (Ermine), Letcher County, KY. Andrew Jackson "Jack" FRANKLIN and Manerva "Nervie" SERGENT were married on 27 Mar 1870 in Letcher County, KY.7 The marriage was performed by Benjamin Craft, J.P., in the presence of John A. Craft and Sarah Franklin.

Andrew Jackson "Jack" FRANKLIN and Manerva "Nervie" SERGENT had the following children:

        +29       i. Ely Wilson "Wilse" FRANKLIN (born on 26 Apr 1872).
        +30      ii. John S. FRANKLIN (born on 23 Dec 1875).

        36      viii. Susanna FRANKLIN was born on 25 Mar 1887 in Letcher County, KY. She died on 25 Jul 1887 in Letcher County, KY. She was buried in Franklin Cemetery, Crafts Colly (Ermine), Letcher County, KY.
        37       ix. Roseanna FRANKLIN was born on 28 Sep 1888 in Letcher County, KY. She died in Letcher County, KY. She was buried in Franklin Cemetery, Crafts Colly (Ermine), Letcher County, KY.
 

        ++Margaret "Maggie" ADAMS (daughter of Randolph "Randall" ADAMS and Martha "Patsy" HALE) was born on 13 Mar 1874. Her date of birth was obtained from her tombstone; Crafts Colly, Letcher County, KY. She died on 13 Jan 1943 in Letcher County, KY. She was buried in the Franklin Cemetery, Crafts Colly (Ermine), Letcher County, KY. Andrew Jackson "Jack" FRANKLIN and Margaret "Maggie" ADAMS were married on 4 Oct 1891 in Letcher County, KY.8

Andrew Jackson "Jack" FRANKLIN and Margaret "Maggie" ADAMS had the following children:

        +38        i. Ollie Jane FRANKLIN (born on 1 Mar 1893).
        +39        ii. Belvia Duran FRANKLIN (born on 28 Oct 1895).

        +Wesley BREEDING (son of Preston BREEDING and Mary "Polly" COLLINS) was born on 22 Jan 1852 in Letcher County, KY.9 He died on 8 Jul 1941. Sarah FRANKLIN and Wesley BREEDING were married on 18 Mar 1871 in Letcher County, KY.10

Sarah FRANKLIN and Wesley BREEDING had the following children:

        +47        i. Mary B. BREEDING (born on 15 Dec 1871).
        +48       ii. William BREEDING (born on 24 Dec 1873).
        +49      iii. Sam BREEDING (born on 31 Aug 1876).

        +Jesse Wilson ADAMS (son of Jesse "Colly Jesse" ADAMS and Mary "Polly" CRAFT) was born about 1863 in Letcher County, KY. He died on 17 Jun 1938 in Letcher County, KY. Amanda FRANKLIN and Jesse Wilson ADAMS were married on 17 May 1885 in Letcher County, KY. Marriage Book #7.

Amanda FRANKLIN and Jesse Wilson ADAMS had the following children:

Martha FRANKLIN and Jesse A. COOK were married on 23 Feb 1891 in Letcher County, KY. Marriage Book #9.

Martha FRANKLIN and Jesse A. COOK had the following children:
