Early Days of Fleming, KY
The photos displayed above are from a scrapbook presented to Nicola "Nick" Carrello by his former supervisor on the construction of the L&N Railroad. Nick was an immigrant from Italy who worked on a gang of railroad "gandydancers" until the L&N expansion into eastern Kentucky was completed at McRoberts. He remained in Letcher County, worked as a miner, and raised his family on the "back row" of Fleming. He was the father of my step-father, Frank Corrello.
