Kauppanen Descendants
John my great grandfather was legally named Milo John Kauppanen, he was born on the fourth of July 1904, he died in June 1956. John also known as Niles in the SSDI records was a baker in Ashtabula, Ohio where he and his three sisters were born. The name Kauppanen is Finnish, and has many variations on the spelling most common being Kauppinen.
John Kauppanen and Wilhelminna (Minna) Hokkanen or Maki, are listed on John's birth record, her being Hokkanen. On his sisters marriage records she is named as a Maki. She died prior to John so it isn't a second marriage. No one knows why the discrepancy.
Minna may have had family in the Ashtabula area as there were several other Hokkanen and Maki families in the records. One had a child in the same time frame as Milo's birth, leading one to believe at least a brother was in the same place as Minna.
John Jr. married Myrtle Koepka daughther of Wylie Koepka and Lizzie Jackson, on December 31, 1927. My parents were also married on New Year's eve, and did not know they were marrying on the same date as her parents until we retrieved the marriage record in 2001. John and Mrytle had three children all born in Ashtabula, OH,. Two of the children are living one in MI, one in TX. The only son William Richard Kauppanen died in 1989 at the age of 55.
The children of John and Myrtle were placed in Randolph Orphanage in NY in 1940 after a severe nervous breakdown of their mother occured. John was unable to care for himself or the children so they remained there for 10 years. When the oldest was 16 their maternal grandmother took them home with her to MI.
