Donald L. Sorby, Ph.D. is Emeritus Professor of Pharmacy and Dean Emeritus at the School of Pharmacy at the University of the Pacific, Stockton, California. He served as Dean of the School of Pharmacy at the University of the Pacific from 1984 to 1995. Prior to joining the University of the Pacific, he served for l0 years as Dean of the School of Pharmacy at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He has also held faculty and administrative positions at the University of California San Francisco (1960-1972) and the University of Washington (1972-74). He is currently a member of the Maryland Board of Directors of Longs Drug Stores, Inc., a company of more than 400 retail drug stores located throughout California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Nevada and Colorado.

Don received a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy from the University of Nebraska (1955) and his MS (1958) and Ph.D. (1960) in the field of pharmaceutics from the University of Washington. He has authored more than 40 publications in pharmaceutics and in subjects related to pharmacy education and practice. He is especially interested in the organization and provision of pharmaceutical services within the broader context of health care policy.

Don has served as Chairman of the Council of Deans and two terms as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. In 1980, he served as President of this same organization. He has served on numerous committees and special task forces of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and the American Pharmaceutical Association. In 1995, he was recipient of the American Pharmaceutical Association's Linwood F. Tice Friend of ASP Award in recognition of his strong support of the activities of the Academy of Students of Pharmacy.

While at the University of California San Francisco, Don was closely involved with initiating the Ninth Floor Project which was the first comprehensive clinical pharmacy patient care and teaching program in the United States. He has served as a visiting professor at the University of Chile and at the University of Lagos in Nigeria and has lectured on pharmacy topics in Kenya, Panama, Mexico, Canada and the Peoples Republic of China. He has been a consultant to the Department of Veterans Affairs and to the National Center for Health Services Research. Don has served as a member of numerous accreditation evaluation teams for the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education and the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education. He is a past-member of the Commission on Credentialing of the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists
 
Don is a member of the American Pharmaceutical Association, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists, and the honorary societies Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Rho Chi and Phi Lambda Sigma. In 1995, he was designated a honorary member by both the California Pharmacists Association and the California Society of Health Systems Pharmacists. He was the recipient of the University of Nebraska College of Pharmacy 2000 Distinguished Alumnus Award.
 

In his spare time, Don enjoys camping, rock hounding, international travel and genealogy research. He has participated as a research-assistant on Earthwatch research teams twice in Papua New Guinea (entomology) and once each in New Zealand (ornithology), Costa Rica (ornithology) and Trinidad (oceanography). Recent travels have taken him to Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

A native of Fremont, Nebraska, Don and his wife Jacquie presently reside in Stockton, California.
