HUTCHINSON FAMILY
Thomas Hutchinson was born about 1640 in England. He was a Quaker. On 8/29/1688 he married Dorothy Storr of Orrestwick at Hilston Meeting, Beverly, Yorkshire, England. Thomas and Dorothy had five children in England: Ebenezer, Thomas, Jr., John, Dorothy and Hannah.
On March 7, 1676 Thomas Hutchinson and his kinsman, George Hutchinson, purchased from William Penn land in New Jersey.
In 1677, soon after his wife's death, Thomas emigrated to America going first to Maryland. Later that same year he arrived in New Jersey on the ship Kent and settled on the east bank of the Delaware River above what is now Trenton on land purchased from William Penn. This tract contained 2,500 acres. At this time, the area was simply known as Burlington and his home was called Hutchinson Manor. Hopewell Township would not be formed for another 23 years.
Of the children of Dorothy and Thomas, Ebenezer, born 10d 6m 1670 is believed to have died at a young age as did his brother Thomas, Jr.who was born 10d 2m 1672. John, born 29d 8m 1674 married Joyce Venables and died about 1704 at Hopewell, Burlington, NJ. Dorothy who was born in 1677 grew up at Hutchinson Manor and in 1698 she married Zebulon Heston. Her second husband was Thomas Stackhouse whom she married in her widowhood about 1728. Hannah whose dates of birth and death remain unknown died unmarried.
Thomas had died by 12/10/1689. His son and heir John Hutchinson in 1703 deeded two acres of ground in trust to four men namely Andrew Heath, Richard Eyre, Abiall Davis and Zebulon Heston, his brother-in-law. A concurrent deed conveyed the land to the inhabitants of the township of Hopewell for the "Erecting and building a publique Meeting House thereon and also for a place of Buriall and for No other Use or intent or purpose whatsoever". The picture below shows part of what remains of the two acres. It does indeed include a "place of Buriall" surrounded by a brick wall and can only be accessed by entering the property of the New Jersey State Hospital.
