Obituary of Axie Ann (Spoor) (Kriss) Seagraves

Aged Mother Called to Rest

Shortly after the noon hour Monday, the Angel of Death quietly invaded the home of Mrs. Eliza Chaple and claimed the spirit of her aged mother, Mrs. Axie Ann Seagraves.

Aunt Axie as she was best known to all her friends for miles around Knox was born to Nicholas and Rebecca Spoor on December 26, 1837, on the Indian Reserve in Cass County near Logansport, Ind., and died at Knox, Ind., November 14, 1921 age 83 years, 10 months and 19 days. Here she grew to womanhood and at the age of 21, was married to Frederick Kriss. To this union five children were born, two boys, William and Joseph, who have preceded her to the Great Beyond, and three daughters, Adeline and Mrs. Mary Evans, who, too, have passed to their Reward and Mrs. Eliza Chaple, who survives and with whom this noble lady made her home for a number of years past.

In 1867, after the death of Mr. Kriss, this good mother and children came to Knox and lived with her step-brother, William Courtney for several years. In 1870, she was united in marriage to Jefferson Seagraves, a prominent citizen of this community and thus she became associated with the early growth of Knox. Her second husband died more then [sic] thirty years ago and she then came to town and lived with her children.

She became a Christian early in life and united with the Free Methodist Church, where she has worked faithfully for many years always anxious to lend a hand wherever possible in doing her Lord's work. She was loved and honored by all with whom she came in contact.

Funeral services are being held this afternoon from the Free Methodist Church in charge of Rev. Smith and interment will be in Oak Park Cemetery.

A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled,
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.

God in His wisdom has recalled
The boon his love had given,
And though the body slumbers here
The soul is safe in heaven.
