of Rebecca Wright
of Rutherford County, Tennessee
Rebekah Thompson, wife of Isaac Wright, Sr., was
obviously a woman ahead of her times. Perhaps women's lib isn't such a new idea!

In the name of God amen I Rebecca Wright of Rutherford County do
hereby make and publish this my last will and testament In the first place I
give to my youngest Daughter Rebecca Goodloe my Negro woman Mary with her two
children and all the children said Mary may have hereafter previous to the
hapining of my death and it is further my will that all the ballance of my
Estate shall be Equally devided between my living Daughters to wit Hannah
Stattler Betsy Wood and Rebecca Goodloe and it is my will that four of my Grand
children namely Sevina Posey Polly Cole, Harret Hutcherson and Amanda Dill them
four and no more shall have their dead Mothers equal part equally devided
between so that the grand devision of my Estate will in four parts and the last
named four legatees shall have one part of said grand devision the negroes named
to Rebecca Goodloe not taking, into the four grand devisions of my estate and it
is further my will that each of my Grand daughters that bear my Christian name
shall receive ten dollars each to get them a black Dress and it is my will that
none of my sons or their children shall have any part of my estate nor any other
person but those named in this instrument. I do appoint my Grandson Alfred
Miller my lawful Executor to Execute this my last and testament if in case that
Alfred Miller refuse to execute this will I then select David M. Garratt to
inventory my estate and receive lawful wages for so doing and then my son Jacob
Wright I appoint my lawful Executor that on default of Miller refusing to act.
To the above written will I do subscribe my name revoking all other wills by me
made. Witness my hand and seal this 9th day of September 1835
