The Identification of In both the 1850 and 1860 federal censuses for Randolph County, NC, two Kivett widows, Mary ("Polly") and Sarah ("Sally"), are listed along with their children. Both were born about 1805, so it is reasonable to assume that both of them are widows of 3rd generation Kivetts. The problem is to determine to whom each one is married.
I. There are three 3rd generation Kivetts for whom we have no wives:
John of Jacob cannot be Mary or Sarah's spouse, since he died before the children of either Mary or Sarah were born. Jacob of Peter and Peter of Jacob are possibilities; however, very little is known about either of them. Some records show Jacob of Peter migrating to Putnam County, Indiana, but I have not found him there. At any rate, neither of them ever appears as a head of household in Randolph County census enumerations, and the data which follows appears to rule out both of them. II. There are five 3rd generation Kivetts who married a "Mary" or "Polly" (a common nickname for Mary):
Jacob of Henry, George of Peter, Joel of Peter and Peter of Peter cannot be Mary's husband, since all four migrated to Indiana between 1820 and 1838, and a we would assume that they took their wives with them. We are left then with only one possibility: This Mary Kivett is the widow of John A. of John. III. Similarly, there are two third generation Kivetts who married a "Sarah" or "Sally" (a common nickname for Sarah):
Henry of John cannot be the widow Sarah's husband, because he appears with his Sally in the federal censuses for Randolph Co., NC, in 1850, 1860 and 1870, and he and his children are well-documented. Once again, we are left with only one possibility: This Sally Kivett is the widow of John of Jacob.
