The Family Tree

I think that I shall never see,
The finish of my family tree.
As it forever seems to grow
From roots that started long ago.
Way back in ancient history times,
in foreign lands and distant climes;
From them grew trunk and branching limb
That dates back to times so dim.
One seldom knows exactly when
The parents met and married then,
Nor when the twigs began to grow
With odd-named children, row on row.
Though verse like this made by me.
The end's in sight, as you can see.
'Tis not the same with family trees
That grow and grow through centuries.

Welcome to our site. These pages are the combined efforts of Sandy McSpadden and Sonya McNeil. This site begins with the descendants of Isaiah Dirickson. Our total off-line database has over 1400 names, and we are adding them to this site, so check back often. Please email us if you would like to be notified of updates via e-mail.

The Early Years

In the early 1800's Isaiah Derickson brought his family from Maryland
through the Cumberland Gap and settled in Davidson Co.,TN. He and his
son Joseph were found there on the 1810 Tax List. Their arrival in TN was at
the same time that the Dale, Bratton and Evans families also came from MD to
TN and settled in the town of Liberty which is now in Dekalb Co.,TN.

In 1812 Isaiah died in Nashville, and named his wife Esther and children
Fanny, Julian (Julia Ann), Isaiah Jr., Will, and Joseph in his will. By
1820 William and Esther Derickson were living in Liberty, TN and were
members of the Salem Baptist Church. William and Esther can be
found on the 1820 and 1830 census of Smith Co.,TN (Liberty was then in
Smith Co.) Joseph and his family lived in Davidson and Rutherford Cos. until their arrival in Smith Co., TN by the time of the 1840 census.

Our research follows Isaiah's descendants from TN to OH, KY, IL, MO,
and points west. As you research this line, you will see how the spelling of the name changes. It starts out as Derrickson in MD/DE in the 1700's, changes to Derickson in TN, OH & KY in the early 1800's and finally becomes Dirickson in IL/MO in the late 1800's. We believe that all of the Derickson/Dirickson families living in TN in the early to mid-1800's were descendants of Isaiah Derickson Sr.
