at Gwinear.
He married Elizabeth HOSKIN
on 19 January 1772
in Gwinear/Bodmin, Cornwall.

The Gwinear parish record says marriage
on 19th January and also says
"certificate granted in Bodmin after his confinement in the bridewell"
Bridewell was a common name for a prison originally derived from the London term
for the main lock-up (originally at St. Bride's Well, then re-named Bridewell)

Mary OATEY (1802) was born/baptised on June 1, 1802 at Redruth, Cornwall.
She married John Ingram (c.1801) on Sept 3,1821
Charles OTEY (1804) was born/baptised on Dec 9, 1804 at Redruth, Cornwall.
Charles Otey (1804), John Harvey,and Henry Williams all of Crowan, labourers,
indicted for stealing 1,000lbs. of copper ore, value £5,
property of Pascoe Grenfell and another, from a mine in Gwinear and Phillack.
John Harvey having been previously convicted for felony at Sessions held 28 April last,
transported for fourteen years.
Charles Otey and Henry Williams both received twelve months' hard labour in Bodmin gaol.

According to family legend, Captain Richard OATEY left Redruth, Cornwall, England
in 1841 (aged 52) with his wife and four children.
This is open to question as all six of their children appear to have died in Canada.
They were Richard and Johnson (19), MaryAnn (17),
Charles (15), James (14), Catherine (12)
In 1842 Richard OATEY (1789) purchased land on the northeastern corner
of St Catherine and Beaudry streets, in Montréal and built a store in 1844.
He was appointed Mine Superintendent for Chaudiere River Gold Mining Company, Beauce, Québec,
and Bruce Copper Mines, Lake Huron district.
Captain Richard OATEY (1789) and his wife moved to Quebec.
Most of their children stayed in Eastern Canada.
         Richard was in Montreal, Canada when he died in 1867 aged 78.

John Holman descended from a line of Holmans in Crowan dating back to 1745.
He was born Oct 26,1821 in Crowan and died Aug 8,1893 in Eden, Iowa.
The family moved from Quebec during 1855 to Wisconsin as his parents, John & Elizabeth Pollard/Holman (farmers) were living there prior to 1850, with his brothers. (Elizabeth Pollard/Holman was born and married in Gwinear).
Mary Ann Holman (nee Oatey) spoke French Canadian so fluently that her children thought she was from France rather than England. They lived in Montreal, Quebec and had 12 children, the last 5 born in Iowa County, Wisconsin.
