Pubs & Publicans
Antique Bottle Club - Melbourne, PO Box 467, Brentford Square Melbourne 3131

We have just begun work on this section
of our website. Please be patient.
THE AUSTRALIAN PUB is one of the most socially significant, historically valuable, architecturally interesting, and colourful features of Australian society. It is the tapestried brick-and-tile-fronted local on the suburban corner; it is the solitary tin-and-timber, paint-peeled oasis halfway between two identical cousins on the red soil plains; it is cascades of cast-iron lace and spindly stilted verandah posts; it is the carpeted, crystal-chandeliered skyscraper in the city with slinky beauties on the arm of the tall-dark-and handsome man; it is the waterfront joint crowded with carefree seamen, burly wharfies, painted prostitutes and self-conscious bohemians slumming for the evening; it is the busy coming and going in the country town just beyond the Sunday travel limit; it is the crowded place at the beach where everybody goes because nobody knows about it, or the sleepy one in the hills which nobody really does know.

This website aims to provide a LIST OF THE PUBLICANS who lived and worked in Melbourne. Unfortunately this may never be complete, as many records have been lost or inadvertently destroyed. Discovering information about old pubs is fascinating. We love the challenge of identifying the publicans and when they obtained their licence to operate. We hope this website will help researchers and those 'doing' their family tree to learn a bit more about their family, where they lived and when.

We also aim to include stories about Pubs both in Melbourne and country Victoria. Visit this website often to learn more.

Belvidere Hotel
The BELVIDERE HOTEL (now known as the Eastern Hill Hotel) on the corner of Brunswick Street and Victoria Parade. From this pub the stonemasons resolved to fight for the eight-hour-day. One of the strongest advocates of the movement was Dr Thomas Embling, a resident of Gore Street and the local MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly). He has been credited with the slogan 'eight hours labour, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest). This photograph c.1863 comes from the La Trobe Collection, State Library of Victoria.
