Map of Hampton, 1638 - 1742

These are two sections [west to east] of a map of the borders of Hampton, New Hampshire, from the year of its founding, 1638, down to the present. Out of the original borders of Hampton came all or parts of the towns of Danville [originally, Hawke], East Kingston, Hampton Falls, Kensington, Kingston, North Hampton, Rye, Sandown, and Seabrook.

Subject to correction, if any, by local historians and/or genealogists, Hampton lost parts of its original territories in four stages. The dates shown on the map for each town are not accurate. For further explanation and more accurate dates, see below.

Western Section. Hampton's first territorial loss occurred on 6 August 1694 when Kingston was incorporated (1). The original Kingston included East Kingston, Danville [then Hawke], and the eastern portion of Sandown.

Eastern Section. Hampton's next territorial loss occurred on 12 May 1718 when Hampton Falls was incorporated (2). The original Hampton Falls included Kensington and the northern portion of Seabrook. On 16 November 1738 it lost what is now the southern portion of Rye (3), and 26 November 1742 it lost North Hampton's territory (4). It's borders have not changed since.

Of the newly formed towns, Hampton Falls was the first to change when Kensington was carved out and incorporated on 19 August 1737 (5). Kingston was the next to lose territory when East Kingston was incorporated on 17 November 1738. A western portion of Kingston went over to Sandown on 6 April 1756. Danville, then Hawke, was formed on 22 February 1760. Finally, a southern portion of Hampton Falls became Seabrook on 3 June 1768.
