    Notes: Sydney H. Smith, 72, a former Clevelander and oil company
executive, died Saturday in Venice, Fla. For 40 years, Mr. Smith was
assistant to the president of the old Canfield Oil Co., which was merged
with the Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) in
1955. At that time he became assistant manager of lubricant sales for
Standard Oil. He was a member of
     the Silver Square Lodge of the Masons. Mr. Smith is survived by his
wife, Vesta, and a daughter, Mrs. Robert L. Murphy, whose husband is the
chief of The Plain Dealer copy
    desk. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mark Episcopal
Church, Venice. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland.

    Notes: Mrs. Faith B. Jackson. Mrs. Faith B. Jackson, who long had been
active in women's groups here, died Wednesday in her Shaker Heights home
at the age of 84. She was the widow of John A. Jackson, former
president of the Canfield Oil Co., who died in 1951. Her home was at
2832 West Park Blvd. She is survived by two daughters, Margaret S. and
Mary E.; two sisters, Miss Lucy C. Barkwill and Mrs. Frederick C.
Sterling, and a brother, Ernest S. Barkwill. Services were held today at
home. Brown Son & Forward Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

    Date: Aug 26 1968
    Notes: Gilbert B. Canfield. Former Clevelander Gilbert B. Canfield
died yesterday in a Buffalo, N. Y., nursing home, Mr. Canfield. 85, was
a retired stockbroker. He went to Buffalo in 1930 to open offices for
Otis & Co. of Cleveland. His father the late George R. Canfield II. was
the founder of the Canfield Oil Co. here. He is survived by a sister in
California and three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren in Ohio.
Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery here.
