T.H. Lewis surveyed this site on July 28, 1884. Lewis described this effigy in an article in Science (Vol. 106 1885):
"...[it] is near Richmond Station, on a terrace about 24 feet above the river. It is 76 ft. in an airline from tip to tip of the wings; the body, with head and tail, is 44 ft. in length. The body to the first joint of the wings is 15 inches in height. Formerly a number of ordinary [round] mounds existed in the immediate vicinity of this effigy."
The direction of the bird's flight is the direction of flow of the Mississippi.
