The table above shows the results of the Garvey/McGarvey Y-chromosome study. Color coding has been used in the result table to emphasize the distinctive marker values that identify each line. So far four distinct Garvey lines and a McGarvey line have been identified. There are also six Garvey men that do not yet have any matches within our study. New lines may be identified as more results come in.

Co Kerry Area Garveys
The Kerry Garvey line is centered on the Dingle Penninsula in Co. Kerry and may be found to have spread farther north (such as Co. Clare). According to Rosemary Garvey's book " Kilkenny to Murrisk" the Archbishop John Garvey branch of the Garveys cannot be traced any further back than the city of Kilkenny in the 1400-1500s. No descendent of Archbishop John Garvey has yet been DNA tested (as of May 2010). It's not impossible that they may turn out be to Kerry Garveys who moved to Kilkenny as part of a mid-1100s migration of Kerry Garveys (and Moriaritys) fleeing political upheavals in the Kerry area. In that case, the large number of Garveys found in Co Mayo may also bear the Kerry Garvey genetic signature.

Co Armagh Garveys
The identification of this line as the Co Armagh Garveys is just based on one family's knowledge of their origins (G2) but all four seem to be genetically very similar to each other. The ancestor of G16 is buried in Baltimore next to another Garvey whose tombstone secifies that they were from Co Armagh - so that is additional circumstantial evidence that this is indeed the DNA signature of the Co Armagh Garveys. The family of another of this group (G14) lives in Galway but knew that their family had once come from elsewhere. Further conclusions will have to wait for more Garveys with this DNA signature.

Co Donegal Area McGarveys
The McGarveys tested so far show two genetic signatures. G10 and G21 may show a genetic signature characteristic of the Tyrone/Derry McGarvey. G13, G20, G23, G25, and G26 may show the signature characteristic of the Gweedore/Creeslough McGarveys of Co Donegal. Interestingly, both McGarvey genetic signatures are of the lineage that is thought to originate from a 5th century Irish warlord known as Niall of the Nine Hostages. This type of signature is most common in the northwest corner of Ireland, which matches up well with the Co. Donegal origins of the McGarveys.

Co Roscommon Garveys
G9's line came from the Boyle/Kilmactranny area of the border between Co Roscommon and Sligo. Message board discussion of Garveys from that area can be seen here. The only information regarding the origins of G1's line (and cousin G5) are family tradition that they "came from the west part of Ireland". However G1's Garvey line has many generations of men with the given name Bartley. This unusual name was only found in Ireland in a small region in the Boyle/Kilmactranny area. The lines of G1 and G9 seem to both have moved to the Birmingham area of England in the mid-1840's. G1's line may have left England in the late 1840's and settled in the Massachusetts/New York area before moving onto Minnesota. The births of the last generation of G9's Garveys born in Ireland were recorded in Aghanagh, Co Sligo (though the parents both claimed to have been born in Co Roscommon).

Co Down Garveys
The Co Down line of Garveys stands out from the rest in belonging to a rare branch of the Y chromosome tree known as haplogroup J1. All other Garveys tested belong to haplogroup R1b (the most common in Europe) and therefore the two J1 results are compared using a different color coding scheme than the rest. These two Newry lines have been separated for at least five generations - and it can be seen that they only accumulated one difference out of the 67 markers. The science of genetics happens to have a very interesting story to tell about the ancient forefathers of the Newry Garveys. Not only do they belong to the rare J1 haplogroup, but the result of DYS388=13 ties them to a specific sub-group of J1 that seems to have originated (thousands of years ago) in an area on the Black Sea coast of Turkey (see Cinnioglu page 130). We will probably never be able to know when and how this line ended up as far west as Ireland. Jim Honeycutt has put together a wonderful map of the distribution of these ultra-rare DYS388=13 J1s.

G1 and G5:
Origin in Ireland:Unknown
G1 and G5 are believed to share an ancestor five generations back. These lines descend from two Garvey brothers who settled in Henderson, MN in 1857. This pair of results shows what it looks like when you find a "match". Notice that these two men share all the same "stripes" on the markers for which both were tested. Only partial results for G9 are available, but the close match with the available markers implies that there may be a link between the G9 (County Roscommon) and G1 and G5 lines.

G2:
Origin in Ireland: Mullaghbrack, County Armagh
The oldest known ancestor was Michael Garvey, b. ca. 1821. He immigrated to Manhattan, New York in 1852. This genetic signature is different from the Garveys in nearby Co. Down. Gerry Quinn says that the Garveys in Aughnagun, Co. Down referred to the Garveys in southern Co. Armagh as the "Stonebreaking Garveys" since many of them were quarry workers or masons. They were known to be of a different line than the Newry Garveys long before genetic testing.

G3:
Origin in Ireland: Aghacordrinan Townland, Columbkille Parish, County Longford
The oldest known ancestor is Owen Garvey, born circa 1832. He immigrated to Manhattan, NYC in 1881 and settled in the West 40s (Hell’s Kitchen).

G4:
Origin in Ireland: Killaloe, County Clare
Oldest known paternal ancestor immigrated to US at the time of the famine and settled in Freedom Township, Outagamie County, WI in 1852.

G6:
Origin in Ireland: Unknown
Oldest known paternal ancestor of this line was Patrick Garvey (b. 1867 Ireland). Patrick immigrated to the US in 1892 and settled in Davenport, IA. The Y chromosome signature of G6 seems to be a variant of what is known as the Irish Type III haplotype. According to Dennis Wright's webpage, this genetic signature is most common in the counties of Clare, Limerick, and Tipperary. G6 differs from the classic Irish Type III signature only in having DYS439=12 instead of 11.

G7:
Origin in Ireland: Unknown
Oldest known paternal ancestor of this line was James Garvey (b. 1840 Ireland). James immigrated to the US and was in Dover, NH in 1880. James' children and grandchildren moved to Rhode Island, Philadelphia, Massachusetts and Indiana.

G8:
Origin in Ireland: County Kerry
Oldest known ancestor was Thomas Francis Garvey born in Co Kerry in 1838. He married Margaret Curran and was in Lowell, MA by 1861.

Origin in Ireland: County Roscommon
(from Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation database: www.smgf.org)

G10:
Origin in Ireland: James McGarvey, b. 1803, Lissan Parish, Co. Tyrone

G11:
Origin in Ireland: Parteen, County Clare

G12:
Origin: Unknown
Oldest known ancestor: Bartholomew Garvey, Pennsylvania, late 1700's. Bartholomew may have come from Scotland, so this DNA signature may be that of the Scottish Garvies.

G13:
Origin in Ireland: Unknown

Oldest known ancestor: James Floyd McGarvey (lived in Chicago early 1900's)

G14:
Origin in Ireland: Galway, Co Galway

G15:

G16:
Origin in Ireland: Possibly Co Armagh

Oldest known ancestor: Peter Garvey b. 1843, Ireland, d. 1885 Baltimore, MD. A Patrick Garvey is buried in the same plot, and has a tombstone that specifies that he was born in Co Armagh in 1828 (d. Baltimore 1868).

G17:
Origin in Ireland: Unknown

G18:
Origin in Ireland: Aughnagun, Co. Down, Immigrated to SW Wisconsin in mid-1800's

G19:
