From History of St. Louis County, Missouri Vol. II, 1911
by William L. Thomas
John Hecht, Sr., who is now living retired upon his farm in Central township in the enjoyment of well earned prosperity, was born in Hanover, Germany, January 10, 1845. He is the son of John and Sophia Hecht, both of whom passed their entire lives in Hanover. At the age of nineteen years, in 1864, Mr. Hecht, of this review, arrived in America, having decided to seek his fortune in a new country where every man may hope for the opportunity of advancement. He found employment as a clerk in a grocery store in New York city but, after a short time, having heard favorable reports concerning the advantages of the west, he began traveling and during the next five years visited the principal points in the country.

In 1870 he reached St. Louis, and being favorably impressed with the agricultural resources of this part of the state, he rented land in St. Louis county for five years, during which time he accumulated sufficient capital to purchase sixty acres in West Ashby. He cultivated his land to such good advantage that he later acquired sixty-two acres on the Fee Fee Road and he owns this tract in addition to his home farm, having years ago gained a position of comparative financial independence.

On November 26, 1871, Mr. Hecht was married to Miss Mary Krueger, who was born in St. Louis, a daughter of Herman Krueger, for many years sexton of St. Peter's cemetery. Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hecht, ten of whom survive, namely: John, who is engaged in farming in St. Louis county; George, Martin and Charles, all of whom are engaged in floriculture in this county; William, who is connected with the Jordan Cutlery Company of St. Louis; Louisa; Edward; August, who is attending the State University at Champaign, Illinois; Louis; and Paulina.

A resident of St. Louis county for forty years Mr. Hecht, in the early part of his experience as a farmer, clearly perceived the advantages of landownership and he denied himself luxuries in order to become firmly established in the business. He is now in a position to enjoy all of the comforts, as well as many of the elegancies of life, and has the satisfaction of knowing that he has reached his position through honorable effort. In politics he adheres to the republican party and in religious belief he and his family are identified with the Lutheran church.
