~Town of Collins
~COLLINS - was formed from Concord, March 16, 1821. A part of Brandt was taken off in 1839, and North Collins in 1852. It lies on the S. border of the co., W. of the center. The surface is a rolling upland, sloping gradually to the W. and descending abruptly to Cattaraugus Creek upon the S. The summits of the ridges are 150 to 300 ft. above the valleys. Cattaraugus Creek forms the S. boundary of the town; and the other streams are Clear Creek and its tributaries. The channels of these streams are narrow and deep. The soil is a clayey loam on the uplands and a gravelly loam along the streams. Collins Center (p.v.) contains 1 church and 36 houses. Angola is a p.o. near the N.W. corner of the town. Gowanda lies partly in this town. (1) The first settlement was made in 1806, by Jacob Taylor. (2) There are 5 churches in town. (3)

Alanson KING, son of Arnold and Candace (COOK) KING, was born in Collins, Erie county, March 20, 1816, and married Charlotte MUNGER in Hanover, Chautauqua county, Jan. 12, 1843. He early became a major of militia, and in 1848 removed to Ashford, where he engaged in mercantile business and owned and conducted a flouring-mill and saw-mill. In 1849 he represented Ashford on the Board of Supervisors. He was an old line Whig, but on the organization of the Republican party joined its ranks. In 1856 he was elected a member of Assembly. He went to the Legislature for honest work and ably filled the position and the expectations of his constituents. Gen. Samuel W. Johnson, a Democrat, said of him: "He returned from the Legislature as poor as he entered it."
Mr. KING was man of more than average ability; he had great influence, and his integrity and honesty were unquestioned. In 1861 he received an appointment in the customs house in New York, where he remained until 1871. He resided in Ellicottville the ensuing two years and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Candace M. GAYLORD, in Tiona, Pa., Aug. 10, 1888, and was buried at Ashford with Masonic honors. His son, Edwin S., the only member of the family residing in Cattaraugus county, was born in Collins, N. Y., Feb. 8, 1844. At the age of fifteen he commenced teaching district schools and taught three winter terms. In Feb., 1862, he came to Ellicottville, and in 1872 formed a partnership in the drug business with Charles H. MATTESON, whose interest he subsequently purchased. Mr. KING was assistant assessor of internal revenue about ten months; after that office was abolished he was appointed deputy collector, holding the position in all eight years. He has been secretary of the Republican County Committee and clerk of the Board of Supervisors.

Robert King Graves was born June 24, 1881, in Will County, Plainfield, Ill. the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Graves. He received his education in Plainfield. At the age of 21, he came to Monticello,Iowa and worked for the Diamond Creamery. On April 18, 1906, was united in marriage with Martha E. Tuel. To them were born nine children. From 1909 until 1914, he farmed in and around Monticello, Iowa. The past 46 years he lived and farmed around Brownsdale, Minn. Mr. Graves, called "Bob" by all his friends, of which he had many, was well known for his wit and humor which he displayed right up to the last. It was a pleasure to be in his company because you were always left with the impression life was well worth living. In his passing we have all lost a very good friend, father and husband who will be missed much by all. Mr. Graves died May 15, at his home in Brownsdale. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. May 18, at Jordan Mortuary Chapel, the Rev. William J. Campbell officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery at Brownsdale. Mr. Graves is survived by his wife, Martha; four daughters, Mrs. Roy Van Vleet(Alice), Mrs Francis Carroll(Frances), Mrs. Glen Krulish(Jean), Mrs. Gertrude Wilder, Van Nuys, Calif.; four sons, Robert and Arthur of Austin, Harry and Donald of Brownsdale; 27 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son Lynn; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Graves; a sister, Alice; a brother, Walter.

He served as field lineman with the 317 Field Artillery, 3rd Infantry Division in Tunisia, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Rome, Southern France, Rhineland. He was discharged as a Corporal Aug 9, 1945. He was a lifemember of the VFW and American Legion. Upon his return in 1945, he was employed by George A. Hormel & Co., until he retired in 1980. Donald and Marian built their home in Brownsdale on property he bought from his parents.POEM
