William HORTON was born about 1766 in Stafford Cty, VA. He Moved.⁽²⁰⁾ Lewis Horton was a young boy at the time of the Horton-Kendrick exodus to
Clinch Valley. His father, William, hesitated to take his family into the
remote indian and wild animal infested wilderness. So William and Mary
Horton remained in Stafford County. However, after his relatives had got
established in their frontier homes, he and his eldest son, Daniel, paid
them a visit. They rode horses over the almost four hundred miles to "Look
before leaping" The rustic beauty of the peaceful, fertile valley and the
immense tracts of good land which could be bought real cheap impressed
william and Daniel Horton. William's doubts vanished and he decided to make
the move in the very near future.

Soon after William and Daniel returned to Stafford County, the family began
making preparations for the long covered wagon journey to Clinch Valley. But
their plans were delayed for almost a year. William became ill and died.
After his father's death, Daniel became the man of the family. Lewis and the
other children respected him as a father.

John Garland HURT was born on 29 Mar 1839 in New Garden, Russell Cty., VA.⁽²⁰⁾ He served in the military between 1861 and 1865.⁽²⁰⁾ Served in Confederacy in Co A, Colonel Peters
regiment, State Line troops, also 21st Cavalry He Member between 1868 and 1880 in Masonic Lodge.⁽²⁰⁾ He belonged to the Masonic Lodge # 244 in Tazewell
co form 1868 to 1880 when he was suspended for non payment of dues. The
lodge disbanded before his death on 28 November 1890. He does however have a
masonic mark on his rather large tombstone. He was elected as Sheriff between 1876 and 1878 in Russell Cty, VA. He was elected as County Treasurer between 1879 and 1883 in Russell Cty, VA. He died on 28 Nov 1890. Death record never found. He was a Constable in Russell Cty, VA.⁽²⁰⁾ He owned in Tazewell Cty, VA.⁽²¹⁾ Mr. Hrut's pleasant residence stands just across the Tazewell line in
Russell County, thre miles southwest of Richlands Post Office, the farm
lying in both counties. The Clinch River Division of the Norfolk and Western
Railroad follows the course of the river through the farm. Iron ore abounds
on the farm, while on Lewis and Swords Creek he has a boundary of fine coal
and timber lands near his residence. A noted spring pours forth its waters
from caves and rocks where fish in great numbers gather to winter beneath

Thomas John L. HURT⁽²⁰⁾ was born in Aug 1879. He served in the military WWI. Crippled for the rest of his life. Said to have served in WWI and was crippled
for the rest of his life. He apparently had no occupation and people took
care of him bodily & financially. I know my grandfather helped support him
as I have canceled checks. I never heard of any war wounds but I did hear a
rumor that he suffered from Syphilis . I have a picture of him in his
youth and he was a handsome man. (whatever his problem was, it was a
"whisper" problem). I don't know when he died.

The Justice family is closely tied to the Sloans of Pike/Floyd Co. Ky. Eliza M. Slone age 16 w/Mary in 1850, also Polly Spencer {black}.

There appears to be a conflict on the parents of Polly Justice, I have no proof on hand.
