from Buchanan to Bohanan

Welcome to the Buchanan / Bohanan genealogy page. From here we will reach across the centuries and follow the lives of the kings and families of Northern Ireland between 300 A.D. and 1000 A.D. We then move across the waters to Scotland and discover the beginnings of the surname of Buchanan. We will follow that distinguished line into Edinburgh of the late 1600's and meet George Buchanan, a young medical doctor. He will immigrate to Maryland in 1723, set up his practice and help with the layout of the city of Baltimore. After the Revolutionary War, the family eventually moves south to St. Mary's County and about 1780, Jonathan Buchanan walks to Annapolis to legally change the family name to Bohanan. St. Mary's County becomes the home for several generations of Bohanan's and many continue to live in the County today.

Of course, the Buchanan / Bohanan saga is just a small part of the entire epic. More families are added with each marriage and more stories are collected into the library of family history and folklore. Other surnames will include: Barclay, Rogers, Gittings, Thompson, Sanner, Yates, Goodrich, Lynch, Forrest, Freeman, Hilton, Ritter, Chandler, Bailey, Delgadillo and Dominguez.

This website is but one of several sites which will explore the genealogical backgrounds of my family and I dedicate it to my children and my neice and nephews. It is my hope that these pages will give them a sense of history in their lives.
