The 2008 DeGlandon Reunion will be held October 19, 2008, at the VFW Hall in McDade, Texas, on Highway 290 East. The first reunion was held in 1924 at the old home place in the Oak Hill Community, near McDade in Bastrop County, Texas. Now the reunion is held each October on the Sunday nearest the birthdate of Alcide DeGlandon, October 19, 1851.
Alcide DeGlandon was born in Avoyelles Parish, LA, on October 19, 1851. He was the oldest son of Francois Xavier DeGlandon and Arthemise Bordelon. In 1867, Alcide witnessed the murder of a man named Lemoine by a man named Ducote. Lemoine is the surname of his mother's first husband, and his brother Joseph later married Celina Ducote. So it is reasonable to assume that the murderer knew Alcide well, or was even related by marriage. In any event, he chose not to murder Arthemise's oldest boy and gave Alcide a horse and saddle. The story is told that he ordered Alcide to ride to Texas and never come back to Louisiana. Alcide waited 32 years before he went back to visit his family. He left Louisiana speaking only French, and when he returned could not understand his youngest brother, Henry, who only spoke French. His death notice at age 91 says that he had lived in Bastrop county, Texas for about 70 years.
Alcide married Lizzie Margaret Stagner on December 13, 1875 at Oak Hill in Bastrop County, Texas. They farmed in the Oak Hill community until he became unable to operate the farm. Their hospitality was known far and wide and their farm home was a mecca for friends and relatives. Alcide died on January 26, 1942 at McDade, TX. and was buried on January 27th at Oak Hill Cemetery. Lizzie died on June 7, 1940 at Austin, TX. and was buried at Oak Hill. Alcide's grave at the Oak Hill Cemetery is mis-marked with the name
