Definition:
(1) The name Martin has Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Flemish, French, German, Irish, Norwegian, and Scottish variations.
Martineau is a French variation of the name; Martinelli & Martinetti are the Italian variations; and Martins is an English variation from the first name Martin, which was ultimately derived from Mars, the Roman god of war.
(2) English, Scots, Irish, French, German, Czech, Flemish/Dutch, and Danish/Norwegian: from a personal name (L Martinus, a deriv. of Mars, gen. Martis, the Roman god of fertility and war, whose name may derive ultimately from a root mar gleam). This was borne by a famous 4th-cent. saint, Martin of Tours, and consequently became extremely popular throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is one of the few saints' names other than the names of OE saints found in England before the Conquest.
